This comparison pits the news-for-2020 41mm Rolex Submariner against the redesigned 43.5mm Oris Aquis Date. Now equipped with a three-day power reserve, the iconic Rolex dive watch pairs slightly increased size with a more gracefully tapered lug profile. The unidirectional Rolex dive bezel with Cerachrom ceramic insert and the Glidelock diving clasp adjustment continue from previous Submariner models.
Oris' new Aquis Calibre 400 adds almost too many new features to count, but the headliner is the new manufacture caliber 400 with a five-day power reserve and a ten-year warranty. Additional features of this Oris dive watch are a diving extension in the clasp, a display caseback, and a new quick-release system for its bracelet and straps.
The Rolex Submariner Date 126610LN is encased in 41mm of stainless steel surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet. Features of this Rolex Submariner Date include hours, minutes, seconds and date. This Rolex watch also measures 12.8mm in thickness and 48.1mm from lug-to-lug.
The Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 01 400 7763 4135-07 8 24 09PEB is encased in 43.5mm of stainless steel surrounding a teal dial on a stainless steel bracelet. Features of this Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 include hours, minutes, seconds and date. This Oris watch also measures 13.3mm in thickness and 50mm from lug-to-lug.

Having owned both the Oris 400 and the 114060 (which hey, is close enough), I feel that the Sub is the better overall watch in almost every aspect, except warranty. But is it twice as good a watch (MSRP), much less four times as good a watch (grey)? That'd be a tough sell to anyone who doesn't have their heart set on a Rolex, irrespective of cost.

There's no denying that the Oris Aquis is the better value for money watch, but since Rolex to most people is about brand prestige and value retention the Oris will sadly be over looked by most. I have the 2022 Oris Great Barrier Reef 3, in a very similar shade of iridescence blue, but with the ludicrously microscopic radial date wheel in orange, orbiting mid-dial. I love the watch because it makes me feel a little bit special- except when squinting strongly at, and failing, to discern the date - then it me feel like a pillock. Lovely watch though - the Swiss Blue - beautiful plumage!

  • @D76-z2h
    @D76-z2h 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

For me if you look past the investment value and brand name, its a no contest now that Oris has raised its game with the movement , so technically its a much closer contest. The whole cyclops idea is hideous and can't understand why the look of the rolex is so compromised by placing such importance in seeing the date that clearly. Obviously designed for divers that not only have bad eyesight, but cannot just raise their arm to get a closer view. Cant be many that spend days underwater either. Am sure others would disagree and see this idea as keeping alive some classic styling. But only my two cents, the Oris streets ahead on style wow factor

Am I the only watch enthusiast who criticises Rolex accuracy? I've had three over the years and all, including the 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller, have been a disappointment. My 16610 was shockingly inaccurate, even after a completely new movement 53 weeks after purchase! The original disintegrated - literally. The AD was embarrassed as he sent it back to Rolex. I dumped it after several failed attempts at regulation.
I then bought a new GMT2C in gold and stainless. It's a beauitiful watch but as inaccurate as the Sub. It also had a faulty bezel that was so misaligned it was irritating. It took Rolex two attempts to fix it. The Sub and GMT both gained 6 seconds a day, barely matching COSC rating.
The Sea-Dweller should have been an improvement, but it, too, has a faulty bezel, which moves round at random on the wrist. If worn in bed, it will advance two clicks overnight, which is ridiculous. This one LOSES six seconds a day and it's on its way back to Rolex under warranty. I have a fake Rolex President bought for me by a friend in New York in 2000. It keeps almost perfect time after 22 years and cost £7 ($10 at the time). Seriously!!
I have the Oris Aquis 400 and love it. I also have a Fortis chronograph with an ETA movement which keeps superb time. The most accurate self-winding wrist furniture I ever owned was an Omega Speedmaster chronograph. I regret selling it. Rolex - no thanks!

No, Tim, you have to rinse the Rolex after it has been in salt water. The cyclops is not a downside if you live in the real world, for it does make the date far easier to read if your eyesight is less than perfect. The quick release on the Oris bracelet is cute, but the reason Rolex doesn't' do it is not because they just don't do it. I guarantee after a few years the likelihood the little clasp will pop open is real, and would be disastrous if it happens when you bump something while diving. Rolex thinks of such things, and thousands and thousands of wear cycles. The Oris' new 400 caliber looks great, but you're negating the fact that new movements inevitably have problems once in the while (even the Rolex 3235 has had regulation issues, despite years of testing before release). A display back is not an automatic plus; you have an additional crystal with an additional seal that can potentially leak. And if you really wear and use your watch, how often do you actually look at the display back?
I've owned Rolex watches and dived with them for decades, and I've never had this "Rolex" problem you dinks at watchbox set to think is such an issue. People don't even notice your watch unless you hang out with very superficial people, and I've worked in rough parts of NYC with my Tudor Submariner (identical to the Rolex from a few feet) with zero issues. Look, I like the Oris, in fact I looked at one and am thinking about getting one as the price is great for what you get and the dial is pretty stunning. But to compare it to the Rolex is apples and oranges, and I'll bet my Sea-Dweller the Sub will be in far better shape after 20 years of diving than the Oris will, lovely though it is.

I own both watches and the one big advantage of the Oris is that I don't feel like a pretentious berk when I wear it. Unfortunately the tik tok and Instagram brigade, who know nothing about horology have ruined the pleasure of wearing a rolex these days

Buy it, keep it and pass it on, Rolex all the way. Its money in the bank and always will be. Oris is a nice inexpensive diver that in your own words will be gone and out of mind 20 years or less.

I admire Tim’s philosophy and think it’s very cool how a Sinn is his daily watch - but there’s no way he genuinely chooses the Aquis. It’s just the necessary one to influence folks to buy because the Rolex Submariner will sell regardless.

This is a joke, there is no comparison on what is a better watch. Now if there is a question on the best spend of the money, the Oris comes in at 1/3 the price, (and no one is going to list for an Oris). The Rolex is superior. The Rolex investment is superior. The Rolex as a 1-watch collection is way superior.

The SW200 in a plethora of Oris watches is a real downer when you flip them over.99% of Rolex watches do not exhibit the movement so there is another downer. The sub mariner was always a tool watch and try as Rolex might it still looks tooley .The Oris is a tool watch that looks sporty in a contemporary format. The visible 400 Movement makes this Oris a keeper even though that clasp leaves a bit to be desired. The sub mariner is okay until you see a yacht Master two tone 40mm.The Oris wins on power reserve and front of and back of house aesthetic‘s.
But let’s get real a whole Nother level for sure, the Breguet Marine Royale In any variation blows just about every dive watch clean out of the water so help me God.

Very hard to compare the Breguet Marine Royale with most other watches. It is very unique.

    • @ewhyte8059
      @ewhyte8059 3 ปีที่แล้ว

ohbennyboy It is very unique in that it looks more historical than contemporary. It harkens back to when deep sea diving began and was very mechanical. Had it been around in those early days the BMR would have become the benchmark for dive watches for at least a century. For now and the foreseeable future the Rolex Submariner is the practical, go to,money no object ,divers timepiece .Imo,
      of course.

I'd buy a Rolex as an investment. But it's just so boring. I can't imagine, being into watches as I am, wanting it to wear. I can imagine not being into watches n thinking it'll make me look rich. I've handled one, it didn't make me want one but I appreciate the built quality. It's like an original BMW 5 series cos it's never changed externally but it's a classic. But unobtainable unless u buy a very expensive watch. So many other great options. Like a car or something.

I mean, the Aquis is essentially the same as previous models, except it now has an in-house movement
    How is that an improvement?
I would much rather go for a tried and tested workhorse movement from Sellita than some new, unproven in-house movement
And even if the in-house movement turns out to be just as reliable as a movement from Sellita, how does that justify the watch costing twice as much
I mean, the bump in power reserve is nice, but for twice the price?
I'm sorry, this is just a case of a manufacturer trying to tap into the strange obsession that some people have for in-house movements, in order to charge more for their watches
I've been a fan of Oris for a long time, their watches are great value for money, because they don't play that in-house movement game, but it looks like that's going to change

It gives the watch more prestige. Watch snobs and collectors care about these sorts of things. Off the shelf movements are associated with cheap watches.

Excellent head to head. Got myself a sub and an Aquis and both are impressive watches no doubt. My Rolex wins when it comes to brand recognition but frankly speaking my Oris wins in terms of quality and price. Bought my Rolex to feel important but nahh..at the end of the day i felt more connected to my Oris cuz realistically it feels like a better watch than the Rolex imo... laid off the Rolex fanboy after being in the watch game for a while.

The Rolex is far more prestigious and will hold its value better but the Oris is far better looking. That blue version is one of the best looking dive watches. Makes the Rolex look old.

I own a subby 41, and a sea dweller SD 43 red. Although quality is sublime and I apreciate them both, Design, looks and comfort of my Oris collection , Aquis, Titan and my TT1 all kill my Rolex's in regards to case, dial and bracelet aesthetics. Simply better looking from every angle. Wouldn't bother me to sell the Rollers, but won't be selling my Oris's unless I'm updating. I'm past the value retention and the whole prestige and snobbery part. I just wear what I like more regardless of brand. Some might argue that the Rolex will last longer. True, but the Oris will last 30 years and I won't be here by then, and if I am here, I probably won't be wearing any 30 year old watch regardless.
Point here is that you buy and wear what you personally love in your own subjective opinion, and don't worry about what the Jones's are buying or wearing.

I bought my blue Oris Aquis Caliber 400 just 12 hours ago, I had a long look at them when they were on the Sellita caliber. This is a great tech watch for the price. And I definitely don't want to look like a person who makes 300,000 a year, because I am not and dont want pretend to be.

    • @joelopic

Yes value for money hands down. They have better clarity and they are for the real people as their moto suggests. I'm an Oris man to the bone. I have 3 Rolexes, might keep the explorer 2. Selling the sea dweller 43 red and subby 41 More comfortable with my Oris collection. People complain about the priority bracelets but it's that design, integration that gives them that look and the curving lugs that hug the wrist. They just do it better.

The Aquis has better magnetic resistance from factory specs on both, Aquis has equal shock resistance according to company literature... just a note not a judgement
