  • An Ariane 5 launch vehicle (Ariane Flight VA256) launched the James Webb Space Telescope from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) at Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, on 25 December 2021, at 12:20 UTC (09:20 local time, 07:20 EST, 13:20 CET). The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST or Webb) is a large infrared telescope with a 6.5-meter primary mirror. Intended as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, JWST was funded by three space agencies: NASA, ESA, CSA. The telescope will be 100 times more powerful, and will incorporate improved and different technologies to capture 70% more light.

the launch of the James Webb telescope by the French team in French Guiana was so precise that Naza communicated that the telescope would have years of life more than what had been planned ... indeed the propellant on board in the telescope which was intended to periodically readjust the position of the telescope in space, was saved, because it was not used to correct the trajectory! a huge success for Ariane and this French team. ESA is happy, Nasa is happy ... i'm so happy !!

@@dmana3172 well, yes and no. Two points to consider: 1) aside from a couple of exceptions, we can't really directly image exoplanets. They're too dimm vis-à-vis the star they orbit. The detection of exoplanets is made using inferential methods. 2) James Webb is a remarkably powerful infrared telescope that will, among other things, use spectroscopy to analyze the properties of exoplanets. For example, it'll analyze the composition of the atmosphere, which could help identify biological signatures, like the presence of high levels of oxygen, a potential sign of life. So, in that sense, yes, it'll allow us to see more clearly exoplanets.

There is a lot of of pressure on both sides. The rocket needs to be 100% and the telescope once launched and postioned 1 million miles away is also not allowed to have any weaknesses.Spending so much money on technology and the time involved to create such system doesn't allow the slightest mistake. All the people /companies involved know: failure is not not an option. - great stuff not only from a technological but also from a human point of view.Congratulations from me.
