I am following Paddy for two reasons:
    1. Love the adventures
    2. Looking to find a "perfect" place to retire in 12-15 years.
Chiang Mai was on the top, but with the burning that takes place and air pollution, it is no longer on the top. Once I saw Paddy's Hat Yai tour, Hat Yai is #1 for now. It may change as Paddy's show more places :).

Hey Paddy, really enjoyed the video, well produced and entertaining. Me and my gf have lived here for 8 months so far, and for what it’s worth I thought I’d post my pros and cons of Hat Yai!
    Pros -
    1. The food. Like you said, there’s great diversity of cuisine and most of it can be found for outrageously cheap prices. What I would say though is you do have to put in the effort to find places, it’s not like some cities where there’s a ‘food street’ where you can just stroll along and browse (although such an experience can be had at Greenway Night Market, not featured in your video but highly recommend you check it out next time)
    2. Cheapness! As well the food, the accommodation is extremely reasonable, we have a spacious condo with a balcony and a nice shared pool for just 3,700 THB a month! Taxis and tuk tuks are also cheap especially compared to Phuket.
    3. Travel connections: like you said the airport is really handy and the train station also has sleeper trains to bkk and Penang in the other direction.
    4. Amenities: it’s got everything you could need and like you said, English language movies, would also point out the 4dx screen there I believe is the only one in the south of Thailand.
    5. The beach, which although not great, is still a beach at the end of the day.
    Cons -
    1. Also the beach! You must have been very lucky indeed because I’ve been to it several times at various points of the year and it’s always been very ugly: the water is a horrible grey/brown colour, there’s a lot of trash, and there are huge concrete pipes scattered all along it. This is not an ideal beach for relaxing and for most of the year the waves are so big you wouldn’t wanna risk a swim. I was shocked to see it in your video as I’ve never seen it like that!
    2. The weather: unlike most other places in Thailand that have a pretty even split, Hat Yai’s rainy season lasts for 75% of the year and at times the rain is so heavy and persistent you can’t leave the house. During the dry season it’s hot that you don’t feel like spending much time outside during the day. So basically you’ve ever boiling or soaking wet.
    3. The traffic lights, which as you rightly said, are a deal breaker! I’m not kidding, we’re actually considering leaving because of it. Maybe it’s bad luck but I always seem to be on the street that has to wait the longest. I’ve seen lights green for 20 seconds and red for 199+. Doable with a bike as you only wait for one cycle but in a car it’s hell. Try that twice a day for a commute and then spending what feels like half your weekend sat in traffic! I’ve since switched to a bike commute but for car drivers it’s enough to make you lose the will to live at times!
    4. The driving standards: we are know Thailand has a very bad standard of driving in general, but Hat Yai is the absolute worst I’ve ever seen. It seems everyone who drives here has a death wish, people will willingly put their lives and others lives in danger just to save a few seconds on their journey.
    5. The views: apart from the temples and the mosques and a few shopfronts downtown, it’s visually quite a drab place, and combined with the usual grey skies it’s hardly a work of art!
I must thank you though, for giving me a slightly different perspective on my current city and maybe inspiring me to make the most of it a bit more, when you’ve lived here for a while it does wear you down a bit!
My conclusion, good for a few days or maybe a week, but personally it’s not for me long term, I’m not much of a city person and I’m itching to go back to island life!
Keep up the good work Paddy!

Hey Paddy, another great video! I’ve been to Hat Yai and Songkhla but never had the time to explore. It is now the month of Ramadan and most will be fasting in the deep South. 14:18 Why it has a bronze statue of mermaid here in this beach ? , Well , the fomer mayor of Songkhla once when he was a child his father told him about urban story that a fishman while walking on the beach at night he saw a young mermaid sitting on the rock and combing her hair with a golden comb. When she realized that the fishman saw her she suddenly plunged to the water and was dissapeared but she forget the comb and left it on the rock , the fisherman kept the comb and waited the mermaid to come back again. Sadly that mermaid didn't come back and the golden comb is still the legend artifact that noone know now where is the comb gone and who keeps it.

@@PaddyDoyle. Actually, there are two mermaid statues being famous in Thailand, the first one is combing mermaid in Songkhla province which you have visited and the last one is on Samet island, located in the east of Thailand, near Rayong province, which is along with the giant bronze statue of a female ogress when you are there you will see them

Well I have noticed this in a few videos. I really hope you tried the food before you added the extra spices ect. As a matter off etiquette you always try it first before you add on, BECAUSE if you add before you try it , you are in a sense saying to the chef “I will season it, cause you didn’t or you don’t know how and I don’t respect your cooking!” (Represents No respect for their abilities) I’m not saying that is what you are doing. I been to some restaurants where they will ask you to leave and never comeback if you add before you try.
I understand everybody has their own preferences, but you should always experience the meal the way the chef has prepared it, thenyou can add to suit your own taste. Just an FYI
    Love the video

Today I saw Suthep mountain very clearly. The haze has started to fade away. A friend sent me a picture. 🤗
At Hat Yai city, there is a cable car up to the mountain to enjoy the view.😉

Nam-Pla - strict means Water -Fish - also fish water - it is used a lot in Thailand as Thai's rarely use salt, so this is used instead of salt, and a few other sauces too. It is neither oil nor sauce...

That coffee shop took the time to digitally weigh the coffee grinds before brewing. That attention to detail is a sure sign of a great coffee house. I paused the video to write this comment and immediately afterwards you said the same thing. Great minds hahaha
