Aro Confederacy was a powerful political and economic union Established by the Aro people of Arochukwu in present day southeastern Nigeria. Its capital city state Arochukwu was founded Around 1690 After Aro-Ibibio wars and the capture of Ibom kingdom’s capital Okon Ita, until its collapse in March 1902 after the Anglo-Aro war during the British empire expedition in southern Nigeria.
At its zenith, the confederation was an economic, political, and oracular religious center as it was the home of the feared Ibini Ukpabi Oracle, High priests, Central Council known as Okpankpo and the revealed King Eze Aro. Their influence and presence were high and mighty all-over eastern Nigeria, lower middle belt, Southern Igala and parts of present-day Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

On point history. Thank you, just the way it is. 😍. Just subscribed too.
Please make more of these videos.A whole lot of our history and wars are are not known plus I love your 3d animation representation.
Very informative
Thank you so much for this video. Its sad that history like this is not thought in Nigerian schools. This is what Nnamdi Kanu meant when he said Biafra existed before Nigeria. Please could you also do a video on the anglo aro war.
thanks a lot. I am working on Anglo Aro war
Yes we were more than igbos there are many tribes who share these traditions its sad we are so alike as African but it seems like everyone wants us apart

this is awesome.
Thanks for that history
In as much as I enjoyed the presentation, I would like to know your sources. Thanks
my sources are in the description are the bottom, click on show more
It’s in Arochukwu national archives. Even the Brit’s is aware of this because the Aro’s were engaged in trade with Brits before colonization. Aro’s got their armaments from Brit’s in exchange of ivory, gold even indenture slaves.
@@historybureauAro is a complete Igbo and was formed with Igbo sub groups. All these Ibibio and others you’re mentioning is madness
Get the history right. Igbo sub groups united and fought Ibibio and Efik people, won and took the land
@@laurenceabilunier9539you wrong please. Aro Confederacy wa greater than Arochukwu kingdom and different from the Kingdom. Aro Confederacy was a Confederate of Igbo kingdoms eg , Abiriba, Ohafia, Nkporro, Abam, Edda etc with Arochukwu kingdom as the capital. Arochukwu did not get any arms from the British rather it was from the Portuguese long before the British arrived. This is why the Portuguese are called Ndi Potokiri in Igbo land. I am very open to questions. This documentary is wrong in some ways, especially the history of Agwu Inobia. He name was Agwu Otisi from Abiriba Kingdom.
@@productogb350hi, please enlighten us more 🙏
You tell a good story. It's richly embellished with fictitious elements though.
Could you tell me the sources you used for the maps?
Found one in Wikipedia
This is the reason Ibibio will never support Biafra lai lai.
Ram 😂
Says who😅
OKENNACHI - EZE AGWU - IBOM-ISI.
u sure from aro, to have know this 3 arms of arochukwu...
Great history well done my brother.
Thanks
I see
Can you make a video on the nwa nwa people and their emperor igwe emeka ?
I will do the research
@@historybureau thanks
B T G ..no be only emperor na demi god
You tried but your accent could have been better if you had sort one with pure pronunciation of the names . You really tried by listing the clans, but then Akuma Nubi were already Igbo clan that had settled in Calabar and Ibibio so it was just out of nostalgia that they aligned their self with their brothers to fight the Ibibio’s. There’s also one thing you need to know that after the war Aro’s took pity to the conquered Ibibio’s and made them part of the clan and up until today they are very influential in Arochukwu rites and approval of EZE (kings) Coronation. They were also allowed to keep their name (ibom) which makes up one of the 19 villages in Arochukwu. Arochukwu structure were purely democratic till date.
So can we say that Igbo civilization started from Arochukwu kingdom?
No, Aro confederacy started from Arochukwu. Nri kingdom is even older than arochukwu
Highly debatable
@@KingEphestino nothing is debatable, Aro people are an igbo sub group. Igbos from abiriba and other areas founded Arochukwu. Arochukwu was founded 1670. igbo people existed before 1670.
@@historybureau aro chukwu was never kingdom,a kingdom is a centralized society headed by a monarch aro chukwu on the other hand was a village headed by a chief priest who sold thousands of aro people into slaving through ubini akpabi also know as long juju
Are the Lejja iron age sites a joke to you? Are the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes and ceramics a joke to you?
And not to diss the Aro, what did they create? Their period in a history was not a happy one.
Yet they ask us where is our biafran flag
Are the Aro Ibibio?.
Igbo mixed with some ibibo just like many other border communities
Igbo where not in existence then.
Aro confederacy included only Present day Arochukwu, Southern Ebonyi, Ngwa and Mbaise.
This group where originally not Igbo but Igboinized Ibibio
One day, we will take it back...we will take back Mbot Abasi.
take what back?
Your story is correct except for the “Akpan”. Since they were from Akwa Akpa it means they were same ibibio brothers, efik... who fought alongside a half ibo and half ibibio against the full ibibio establishments. But in the overall you did well to outline the war details.
Don’t involve Efiks in your messy story
It was very historically clear. Eze Agwu Otisi alias Nna uru (father of gains) was the first Igbo person from Abiriba to Migrate to the Ibibio Kingdom Obong Okonita and Ibom. He was not Agwu Nnubi. You're mistaking him for Akuma Nnubi ( one of the partners from Akpa/Ejagham who helped Eze Agwu Otisi and Nnachi from Edda conquer the Ibibio kingdom that later became Arochukwu). If in doubt, go ask the present keepers of Ebunu Ukpabi shrine why they're called Umu Otisi (Children Of Otisi)?.
This war looks like a western style of war. Our ancestors did not fight like that. This looks more like holloywood. I think they fought set by set in a traditional style. While, the drums beats and the rest wait for their turns. If our ancestors were this militarily sophisticated the wouldn't have been conquered as of that time.
Hahahahaha. Really
Dey play, u no know wetin be machine gun
But aboh and asaba were client states of the bini empire and were not part of the Aro confederation
Aro confederation is a confederation of Aro people scattered in many parts of Igbo land. For clarity they extended beyond Igbo into Cameroons and they also did not cover all parts of Igbo land. They most likely did not have any settlement at Aboh and Asaba, doubt they ever crossed the Niger into the Western Igbo states. They did not have any empire for clarity, just settlement of influences and trade. Note, they used more guile through Chukwu (Ibini Ukpabi than brute force, though they had mercenaries from the War like Ohaji, Abam etc people. If they had being more overtly violent, probably they would have had fierce resistance from other Igbos.
@@innocentodinkemere4597yes it's true they didn't have any settlements in western igboland
Have you ever heard of Ezechima? Look for the history before displaying unnecessary...
Lies, go study Ekumeku War to understand. Yes, they're not part of Aro Confederacy but never part of Bini Empire. The reason they fought the British for 31 years while Bini was Conquered by the British in roughly 10 days and no Igbo land including Abo and Ahaba defended Bini.
You deliberately refused to state that The Ibibio people long existed and were the Original owner of Ibom-Kingdom which covers all the areas where Arochukwu is now. Arochukwu only came into existence after some groups of Igbos who only came for Trade and were given free-hand and hospitality by the Ibibio, tue Igbos fell in love with the Area and the people. After some years of trading, they stage war with the Ibibio Kingdom and their brothers came from other parts of Igbo's land, and because they were more in numbers than the Ibibios, they conquered the Ibom-Kingdom, and decimated the people of Ibiblio. That's how the Aro people came to be in Arochukwu. Any story less than this is inaccurate
False
When did the Ibos changed their name to Igbo? Dogee indeed.
they were never ibo. the British called them ibo because of their british accent. the tribe and language is Igbo
It has always been "Igbo". The "Ibo" came from the British because there is no "gb" in the English language. We are Igbo, speak Igbo, write Igbo, and have always been Igbo.
another fake history again. how can aro fought lbibio when Ibibio are part of aro people
I urge u to read more. There are numerous wars between d Igbos and Ibibios in arochukwu back in d days, cos they are both arochukwu's. At last peace reigned and both ethnic groups domiciled peacefully in Arochukwu. Go and do ur research. Everything in this documentary is indeed true, except one or 2 unclear issues.
@@paturch7201 there was nothing like lgbo during that time so how can lbibio fought people who were not existing
@@EvwienureEjowokeoghene-ck8hd ur comment is laughable 😂. So whom where d Ibibios co-existing with at that time? Abi na only Urhobo's dey exist that time?
@@EvwienureEjowokeoghene-ck8hd Your arguments sound stupid. Aro is not the equivalent of Igbos. Aro is an amalgamation of 3 sets of people. Igbos, Ibibios and Akpan. From the narration, a part of Ibibio aligned with the part of Igbo and the part of Igbo to form Aro. Now if you are more intelligient and understand sets, this new set, hired people from other parts of Igbo and fought a particular part of Ibibio to establish a settlement. There was never a war between Igbos and Ibibios, there was a ar between Aro and an Ibibio establishment. Comprehend?
@@EvwienureEjowokeoghene-ck8hd igbo's were not in existence then. Are you ok or did you stumble into a phone and data?
Lies
Then tell me the original history
Stupid history. Port Harcourt was founded in 1913 while Arochukwu longjuju existed in the 15th to 18th century. Why is Port Harcourt in the map ? There was also no Arochukwu rule in the Niger delta. The Niger delta had their various kingdoms like Kalabari kingdom, Bonny kingdom, Nembe kingdom and others.
port Harcourt was called igweocha. a lot of Niger delta city kingdoms were Aro client states. lots of those cities were founded by Aro Igbos, that's why a lot of present day Niger Deltans are Igbo. know your history and put sentiments aside. Nigeria doesn't teach history so, go out there and learn.
@@historybureau
Shut up there was no place called Port Harcourt until 1912 when the Europeans in Degema relocated to the Okrika and Rebisi land which they called Port Harcourt after finishing the seaport .
Are you an Igweocha native ? Who were the Igweocha natives ? Arochukwu people ?
@@tralbriggs104 I should shut up. i see your last name is Briggs. one of those ones that changed their name to Whiteman's. I know the history of lower Niger. I know when the area was rename Port Harcourt. keep your self hating and brainwashed head to yourself. Aro confederacy was a collection of different ethnic tribes.
Dude, you are clearly very ignorant
@@historybureau Why do you not research the book Among the Ibos of Nigeria.
FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS.
It's funny because Okon Ita and Akpan are both Ibibio. So what are you saying? You said Ibibio and Akpan are tribes, this shows me you don't know what you're saying or are doing copy and paste research. Your assertion is like saying Moses and the Israelites were two different countries. Moses is an Israelite! Ohafiah is a corruption of Affiah name in Ibibio as well as Inobia a corruption of Abia an Ibibio name and these names are post Ibibio-Aro war because of the Ibibios that stayed behind in AroChukwu after the war and mixed with the Igbos. Igbos don't bear Abia, Abia is an Ibibio ancestral name and Ibibios are descendants of Abia the son of King Solomon the son of King David. This is how they got the name Abia. Every family or group in Ibibio has Abia in their name or as an ancestor but Igbos don't. Your research is mixing up a lot of facts, and suming up the same people as enemies or opponents. You Igbos are very funny people. You lost Biafra war because you betrayed the Ibibios and Efiks and they decided not to fight again. They remembered what you did to them and will never trust you people again. Funny enough today, you Igbos claim to be Jews but your ancestors claim to be the sons of Eri, and Eri was the son of Gad. So tell me again how you guys are Jews? Always trying to twist and take credit for what you're not.
Oga ,carry your bigotry dey go! Son of king Solomon the son of king David my arse
@@joebardi156 your response says it all. Judge for yourself who is a bigot! ...and u sound so angry why? Does the truth offend you my brother?
You are quite right but wrong at the end.. don’t disprove others to prove your self. Just speak of yourself.
You're an educated illiterate that's why your argument feels so empty. What is know today as Arochukwu kingdom used to be an Ibibio kingdom called Obong Okonita and Ibom before Eze Agwu from Abiriba Kingdom and his war allies with the help of Ibibio rebels led by Kpakpokpo Okon Conquered Obong Okonita and Ibom, they renamed it Arochukwu kingdom and it became an Igbo kingdom from that time they started having Eze instead of Obong. About Biafra, I doubt if you're truly from Cross River or Akwa Ibom cuz you sound too ignorant to be from there. Does the name Philip Effiong ring a bell to you or not?
