@3:02 Mrs. Robinson is NOT his former teacher. She's the wife of Benjamin's father's business partner. That's what makes the risk so high, and that's why Benjamin's parents are so eager for Benjamin to date Elaine later in the film.

I have worked as a wedding photographer since the early '60s. One wedding I still remember, it was the end of the reception and the bride was getting ready to drive off with the groom. I actually saw the excitement adrenaline drain from her face to be replaced with the expression of "Oh hell... what have I done?"
I heard that she left him a few years later with a child to raise on his own.

This film and the powerful ending continues to evolve with every revisit.
Watching as a college students (in film class at that), it make me fear of what's to come. Will I be able to find my own path and not feel locked up by society?
Watching after working for 5 years, I realized I'm even more lost. But everyone else is too. It's still scary to think that many people my age has already surpassed me on so many things. Still, very few can say that they are fully satisfied with where they are in life. Now, I'm still unhappy with where I stand and having no purpose sucks, but I do enjoy my life moment to moment. That's just enough for now.

A masterpiece highlighting the emptiness of living in a society focused on wealth and materiality, including empty sex, and not real, inner happiness. As for me, I identified with the quest for the beloved as he drove up to Berkeley to win Elaine. What is now called stalking was then considered simply romance. I don't think the current label takes the heart's passions and desperations into full account.

    • @StudioBinder

The long melancholy ending on the bus was an accident because the director forgot to say cut. The shot looks genius as if the reality sets in of what they've done. But the reality is that the actors were just waiting to hear "cut!"

This movie was a seminal touchstone for that generation, with it's beautiful music man, so iconic and classic and what a touch of genius to use Simon and Garfunkel the tone of melancholy is Soo good. It was such a huge movie when it came out oh how it must've spoke to all the people the characters age feeling the same ways be did an they're being displayed long film realistically like never before and everyone shouting and laughter with applauds and standing ovations that is what the parentals told me it was like ok this was art made for it's time and of it's time to make such an impact through line as all art does, it first perfectly into that specific period to take the word stage.

Sound of Silence also plays when Ben is drifting in the pool after idling for weeks and having an affair with mrs. Robinson. I believe the song is indeed tied with his feeling of lost and emptiness and made into a symbol of it. First after graduating, then after losing his virginity and finally after getting married with a girl he thinks he loves. The inner confusion won't solve itself by external achievements.

I just watched the film and wow, the cinematography was ahead of its time. I wonder if a movie like this could be made today with how sensitive people are these days. It limits creativity. Especially about certain topics and age gaps.
(Despite all the progress women have made since then and how popular it is for guys to be attracted to older women to this day.)
Granted, Mrs. Robinson didn't traditionally seduce as much as she sorta kidnapped Benjamin in a comedic way at first, but they did develop some sort of bond as the months went on. And such clever use of motifs. Having some sort of jungle motif, windows, and having her wearing animal print. As if he was her prey in a jungle. Every single shot is so deliberate. The soundtrack is amazing.

You are mistaken about the lingering final shot. I watched a documentary about the film years ago. Mike Nichols let the camera continue to roll and Dustin Hoffman and Kathryn Ross did not know what Nichols wanted hence the bewildered look on their faces. But the editing uses it perfectly to imply a possible mutual thought: We have our freedom from conformity but now what do we do? One reviewer noted the bus full of people resembling their parents is heading toward the suburbs.

Is there other example where the movie starts and ends with the same song, but slightly different versions? It doesn't necessarily need to open with it, the song could be heard any time throughout but a later use shows a deeper meaning to it. Just more "for instance". Thanks in advance! Benjamin had been manipulated by others his entire life to fit into place in society, not so much for his benefit, but for those by whom he had been manipulated and he performed well, very well, but when all that was done, the only one who was still unfulfilled was Benjamin, who had no interest in the options that were being offered to him, left and right. He had no passion. He had no direction, until he met Elaine and she was perfect in the moment--young, beautiful, and the daughter of the one who manipulated him, so that he'd be ineligible to take the hand of the one he eventually came to desire. In the last scene Benjamin was essentially where he was in the beginning of the film. The battle was over and the prize was won, but what happens next? I think just a replay of the themes of the film, just with new characters and different settings and always a new beginning with plenty of self-doubt.
