I think she sang in France before she went to the U.S. Also she did another movie where she was married to Henry Fonda in France and he was writing a symphony and she was singing opera. This number was from "That Girl From Paris" with I think Spike Jones and 2 other American well known actors but I can't remember their names right now. She was a colouratura Soprano which is why she could sing those very high notes. Look in TH-cam for her singing "The Bell Song" from the Opera Lakme. She really even sing higher when she sings the Bell Song.
Lily has been one of my lifetime loves. I was Introduced to her by my father, via one her 78 rpm recordings, MANY years ago. She has remained, in my perception (auditory and otherwise), as my personal favorite Coloratura Soprano! 😊
FYI: Sometimes "That Girl From Paris" (the entire movie) is shown in TCM (Turner Classic Movies). I have to look up the movie with Lily Pons and Henry Fonda which also sometimes is shown on TCM and I'll post a comment with the name after I find it.
With Dame Joan long pushing up daisies, a possible successor would have been June Anderson, but without a great P.R. machine a la Fleming and Netrebko, people's talent will go unnoticed. It kind of makes you believe that the people in power want us to accept mediocrity, be happy with it and keep our mouths shut. There was a possible contender, Nat Dessay before she lost the plot, I have to add ''allegedly''. Ingeborg Hallstein was awesome, but has retired now. Que sera
@@mariannec2322 Lily Pons is FANTASTIC! But, you're right. Absolutely! They’re higher but most opera singers will tell you they’re not “really” part of her range since they don’t project. Look up Mado Robin for a singer with high notes as high as Mariah but legitimately produced.
I think her musicality, pitch, timing are perfect and she does a great job with the highest coloratura segments. However, to my ear , there are many more "beautiful" floating and resonant voices. Renee Fleming is the perfect example of that.
Renée Fleming is an incredibly boring singer to hear. Her voice is beautiful enough, but she has no fire or spark to her delivery. Silly to compare her to Pons. Renée could never execute these coloratura passages as we see Pons do here.

This is the highest soprano! She was very charming woman!
Beautiful voice. thanks very much
Charming and beautiful with a vocal timbre like no other!
My dream queen how do I resurrect her
Lili Pons my favorite soprano.

To think she could still sing like this in her 70s watched this as a child in the 70s.
I love Her so much😍
😲... excelente, fabulosa y maravillosa ,talentosa 🌹🙏👸🎤⭐🎶👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Blue Danube is one of most beautiful of Johann Strauss's waltzes.
Magnificently superb! Perfection personified!!👍👍👍👍😃😃
This Is "MUSIC and BEYOND" Bring Opera To The Film Crowd in the mid 30's
She kept up those high notes well into her seventies.
Indeed she did!
cause she had the right singing technique
Swing meets opera. It's like an early 20th century version of the space opera from the 5th Element.
Yes you're totally right I think 5E was based on her.
What a wonderful voice ! ......
written in the throat. 30% technics, the rest given from heaven. Yes, she was a phaenomen
Beautiful voice

Top!

Bravi.
Brava.
la mejor soprano para mis amigos
She was the best for my friends as well.
I like this woman's voice and appreciate her as a performer.

MERAVIGLIOSA
Nice.
Brawississimo! Wunderschon!
that agility tho
I didn't know there were words to this song.
It was originally a song with words and only afterwards became popular instrumental only
Donn Rutkoff The same applies to other Strauss waltzes.
Deanna Durbin sings a different version in spring parade 1940
Where can one find sheet music for this
la plus jolie
There are NO SINGERS TODAY who can MATCH HER TECHNIQUE
I bet there are, they are just not popular/not in youtube

Aida Garifullina !

WUNDERBAR!!!!!
Is there any soprano in the internet who redid this kind of version?
I wonder if the studio ever released the arrangement.
Great soprano and I love how the band are dying to turn the music into swing lol.
she sounds so much bttr than the present auto tune singers
Are Mariah's whistle notes as high as Lily's?

How could anyone handle this
Great singer🎉🎉🎉🎉 amazing Voice ❤❤❤❤ utube john bavas crazy
What a voice, puts crystal to shame

Patricia Weis
I'll take Mesplé any day
I love Mesple also. But she didn't have the beautiful burnished round tone of Lily Pons.
A SINGER TO THE CORE UNLIKE THE BELLOWING SOPRANOS TODAY
AND still making a concert aged 76 wow talk about talent!
was she french ?
fa_ dfr yes
Yes she was. She was a French woman.
She became a US citizen in 1940.
Mark
fa_ dfr born in Cannes (South of France).
Eduardo Braivein Actually, Draguignan, not Cannes. But she is buried in Cannes.
Americans, in films like this, have been brainwashed to think that "pure" opera is boring and must be "jazzed up" to be tolerated. Stupid and sad!
Remarkable likeness to Rebecca Hall?
