  • José Manuel Joly Braga Santos (Lisboa, 1924-1988)
    Symphony No. 4, "To the Portuguese Musical Youth" (1950)
    Played by the Orquestra Gulbenkian, conducted by Pedro Neves
    Movements:
    1. Lento (0:00)
    2. Andante (13:32)
    3. Allegro tranquillo (25:26)
    4. Lento (31:33)
    Images: scenes from Lisbon, around 1950. The last movement shows various scenes from 20th century Portuguese history that took place around today's Praça do Comércio in Lisbon.
    I recorded this concert on my phone in glorious mono back in 2013, and although it shows I still consider this the best interpretation of the symphony I've heard sofar. It's a bit of a joke on my part.

    This fourth symphony is outstanding by any standards, particularly the last movement which I feel like shouting from the mountain tops. And that gorgeous finale. Well done TH-cam.

    5. Finale (42:13) and my favorite part of this astonishing symphony.

      Between 42:13 and the final is the 4th Movement. It's so beautiful.

    You have made my life much richer by uploading all these neglected masterworks that never get played anymore in concert or on classical music radio stations. I am age 72, retired Viet Nam era veteran, and totally unable to afford CDs amymore.

    It is true...all good things come to an end.
    I am guessing that your channel was rather time consuming and of course hard work.
    Saying/writing 'thank you' seems so inadequate, you have earned a medal a big shiny golden one.
    I wish you all the very best for the future.

    Sorry to see you go, but thanks for all you have done for music lovers. Unlike books that can be obtained to some easier degree than recordings, most music disappears from accessibility soon after it is recorded, that is, the rarer music and the lesser known composers. Assuming you plan to leave your channel active, your contribution to music education and these composers themselves will continue as new explorers of TH-cam seeking rare music will continually rediscover these works. Thank you for all you have done for me in introducing composers I have never know before and have grown to appreciate. Jk

      The channel will remain active, I just won't contribute to it any longer unless something exceptional comes along. And when recordings on my channel become commercially available I shall remove them here (or if someone asks me to).

    I hope you change your mind. I understand your dilemma's but it is a catch-22. If you don't upload it, nobody will know it. The music will be languishing and fade away on the shelves or in drawers.

      As I wrote, I may if I come across worthy of uploading. The truth is, that I've exhausted my supply for now apart from stuff that others have uploaded already.

    I am sorry to see you go. You have performed a far more valuable public service than the many channels on TH-cam that simply rip commercial CDs and make them available. I have contacted Naxos several times based on these recordings, and hopefully something good will come of those.
    Whatever you do, do not delete this channel.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Graham. To be honest, it's those CD-rip channels that I find really problematic, particularly because I know how tough it is to make a recording profitable - and to set money aside for new ones.

    É de lamentar que não se divulgue mais entre o povo a música clássica dos autores portugueses. Só a música dos clássicos estrangeiros tem valor ?... Por favor... Ouçamos a boa música portuguesa,,,

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Não creio que a situação tenha mudado muito. Na verdade, a música portuguesa é mais fácil de obter. Houve boas e múltiplas gravações de obras de Braga Santos, Freitas Branco, Vianna da Motta e outros/outras nos últimos anos. A sala de concertos é um assunto diferente, obviamente.
