      Definitely something strange happened with Cheptegei during the final lap, a runner of his caliber doesn't drop like that and ends up in 6th place. Injury? Bad planning? something else? I like Jacob but I would still bet my money on Chetegei for Tokyo.

    the greatest of all time Hicham El Geurrouj ran 3:33 at age 20, 3:31 at 21, 3:29 at 22, 3:28 at 23, and finally the WR 3:26 at 24.
    Jakob ran 3:31 at 17, 3:30 at 18, and 3:28 last year at 19. we are witnessing the rise of what might be a game-changing hall of famer / all time legend. i can't wait to watch his career over the next decade. i don't want to jinx it - but i think it's safe to say there may be some olympic golds, world golds, "doubles" (1500+5000), and world records in his future.

    What makes this performance even more surreal is the fact he got caught out when Cheptegei turned it up during the 3rd km and had to run a 60 flat from 3000m-3400m to get back in touch and was able to do so without blowing. Cheptegei ran a 2.32 4th km and Ingebrigtsen made 15m on him during that km then went on to out kick a stacked field. Have never seen anything quite like it.

With the 5000m final the night before the 1500m final, I am almost sure that he will go for the 1500m only. Even a year later, it still shocks me how epic this race was on the part of Jakob. This is definitely his most impressive win of the past few years if you're judging by the amount of grit, determination, and effort it took for Jakob to come out on top. The effort it took to get back into the lead pack alone was incredibly impressive, but to outkick Gebrhiwet and Ahmed in those last 100 meters after already being almost at the point of complete and utter exhaustion was legendary.

    What I note is Ingebritsen's build. Looks to have very powerful legs, so no wonder where his relatively monster sprint for a distance runner comes from, and still has a light upper body. For sure he can medal both distances, without all the cards falling in his favour. One trains their way into this perfect shape, but I'd also call this a fundamental natural gift. Also, some dudes have to run from the front, like scared rabbits and that's not just all confidence, it takes a cool customer to hang back most of a race conserving energy but avoiding spikes and boxing in. He reminds me of John Walker.

    • @BugattianVeyronian
      @BugattianVeyronian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When talking about stride turnover, I think Kenenisa Bekele is still the king but we never know, Ingebritson is only 20yo.
      It seems to me that Cheptegei can't sprint, his incredible long stride is always the advantage he has, that's why in order for him to win, he needs to build a gap very early on with a very consistent pace, otherwise it's gonna be a run like we saw here.

    • @andrewhill1858
      @andrewhill1858 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said. Jakob has a unique build for a distance runner that defies the norm and what most people think is that ideal build. He certainly has what it takes to win both. Also, glad you’re pointing out what I’ve thought all along: front running is not courageous at all.

    This was a huge performance from him, and I think he’s really starting to show that not only can he run, but he can race. If you look at this race compared t his last 5K (Doha 2019) the difference is huge. His positioning is better, he runs the race very evenly compared to the front group (although the same can be said for Doha) and, most significantly, he doesn’t get overly eager with his kick, he waits and unleashes it when he knows he can sustain it to the end. Jakob has stepped it up again this year and I really believe he might be able to pull off the double at Tokyo
    Edit: just checked the schedule, that’s not happening lol
