Will introduce evil flickering, so use only where you can guarantee that this will almost never hurt: some skyboxes, background of scenes with fixed camera angle or billboards Some folks even used custom DSP microcodes (similar to todays pixel/fragment shaders) that further allowed to lift some restrictions: -allow for non-POT texture sizes (like 80x51, 43x95...) -ultimatively go beyond the 4kB per texture limit by allowing things like clever memory swapping during a texture draw (think 80286 EMS memory banking or old VESA graphic modes in assembly :). This is the most complicated option that requires care & expertise when implementing to get it to perform reasonable well & painstaking testing. Only a few gurus were masochistic enough to even want to pursue this step. This ultimatively would allows for 128x128 textures & beyond on the N64, however, they would still be limited by memory bandwidth & space. Another technique that a few developers used to save bandwidth & space was to omit the Z-buffer altogether - but this limits the kind of geometry your game could have because not all graphics would get rendered correctly this way.
@"Johnny Torpedo" I guess Indiana Jones does some of that. I know they coded custom microcode and they certainly did something with the Z-buffer, judging by the numerous geometry glitches you can find in some areas. I also stumbled on some occasional texture glitches. GoldenEye also uses some funny texture sizes, but I don't know just how much microcode reworking there is there, since the game was in development even before the N64 released, with prototype footage already showing level models in what seems to be their final form, and, supposedly, Nintendo only released the microcode tools to selected developpers towards the end of the N64's lifecycle. @"Frank Harwald" you seem way better informed than me, so any input is appreciated.
this is amazing, wish more game creators would do let's plays of their own games. if anything an LP would get around the issue of putting commentary in an interactive medium.
+SonicRyan1992 Absolutely! It's a great idea! If you're looking for a particularly good one, two of the former senior devs of Ratchet and Clank 2 & 3 have a developer commentary on TH-cam under "uselesspodcasts". Has a lot of great stories and insight into the development of the game, I'd highly reccomend them.
It's weird to go back to this. An old friend introduced me to Conker when we were both debatably too young for Conker. (I mean, rebellion in consumption is important for early teen development, though, hence debatable) Sadly, he died really young (like late 20's) and I don't think I got to tell him about this commentary series. That said, I think the last time I talked to him, I messaged him on Facebook to tell him I finally beat my copy of Live and Reloaded. In retrospect, I'm so glad I got through that goddamn lava surfing level, 'cause at least it meant I talked to him one last time. Nick, you had such great taste in games, man! I played the first Alice game too, (both of them, actually) and you were right! It was great too! Still haven't played Undying, but I'll get to it some day.
I love this, my dad bought this game for me when I was 7 or 8 and it became a fun part of my childhood. I wish these guys could get together and make another. These guys are funny and are a bunch of geniuses.
@@posey9573 Lol my mom thought it was a kid's game. We ended up playing multiplayer together when I was about the same age. Really there isn't anything all that bad in Conker. Its really only M rated because of the blood and alcohol references.
I'm sure I've said this before but this was the first Nintendo 64 game I owned. I was 15 and I got a call from my local eb games. They knew me and let me know if I bought an n64 for 20 dollars I could get conkers bad fur day with it free. This game was so good. I didn't have a good highschool experience but this game got me through some really dark times. Chris seavor is a name I will never forget. I can't thank you enough for making such a great game. Honestly from the bottom of my heart thank you.
If you play the PAL version (preferably on an RGB modified machine), you can somewhat negate the low res issue with the game as it plays in the higher Pal resolution. The jump from NTSC to PAL resolution is about the same as the jump from PAL to 720p HD, so it makes quite a difference & the scanlines are much less obvious, as they are finer. The PAL optimization was really well done (thanks guys!) so the game runs at the same speed as well. I have both the PAL & NTSC carts and only use PAL.
I fucking love this game! Still one of my favorites of all time! Being able to hear the voices behind the game that put it together is really amazing, and fucking hilarious all at the same time. Thanks for making the vids!
I would love so much a sequel to that! Hail to the greatest game of the N64 and to the greatest devs of all time! (Not Rare in general, just the ones that were on Conker)

Believe it or not, Rare was already making terrible games way before Nintendo even bought them. Rare made Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, that NES board game. LJN was only the publisher of those games.
Chris' voice is higher than I thought. Still this is great, seeing this all of these parts on my subscription box this morning. I know what I'm doing this morning
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS!!! I'm a huge fan of the classic rareware games, especially conker, which is my favorite game of all time. You guys are friggen awesome, and truly loyal to your fans for doing this.
Hmm, this actually explains a lot. Conker is meant to be an average American squirrel yet ironically have a British accent in a few scenes. I was weirded out trying to make sense of Conker's vague nationality until fellow fans finally point out that he's clearly American. The developers are the ones who have more of a British accent then anything else. Everything makes sense now lol
Oh fucking yes. Late to the party, but can't wait to watch Seavor and Co.'s commentary on the greatest game ever fucking made. Good job on teaching me to swear when I played this at the tender age of 6. You guy's games shaped who I am today. Don't tell my folks, though.
Mario Kart, Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, Pokemon Stadium, Harvest Moon 64, Yoshi's Story, Rayman 2, Mario Party, the list goes on and on. Out of many games, I would say this was one of my favorite N64 games I ever played. Heck, I even own 2 copies of the N64 version currently. Such ashame it will never get a real sequel now due to what Microsoft did.
One other thing - I'm not sure if this was being viewed on a flatscreen (the capture doesn't look to be 4:3?) but the N64 looks horrendous on anything but a CRT TV. Maybe that's why it looked bad to the guys commenting? - it looks great on my 1998 Sony trinitron.
yes i truly remember this game on my imported N64 from the US its in my top 20 games of all time thanks lads shame you cant re release it for a new generation to play, mind you thats if they will play a less than 1080p game
I've recorded some nice N64 footage using a cheap $5 USB capture device (EZ Cap 60 or whatever), and that combined with the right recording program and a nice s-video cable for the 64 (with audio running directly to the recording computer's line in), can get you some nice clean picture. It's only 480p, but it's nice for what it is.
Rare was it's own Grim Reaper, they had insanely stringent standards and very rarely released games. After the Stamper Brothers left in '07, things just fell apart

Hey, why wouldn't they for this game? There's no money to get for people buying the actual game.

It wasn't when the video came out, and for that matter said collection uses emulation.
@@videogamingfreak13 Plus they don't even work at Rare anymore.. Don't think they'd even get any money from Rare Replay.
"How can we make this (game) different enough to justify its existance?"

And never will
This is how programmers got around the 1k texel (32x32) limitation of the N64 hardware:
-limit texel colors to 256 by using palette lookups: allows up to 4k texels (mostly, this doesn't screw up the color response too much for such low-res textures)
-limit texel colors to 16 by using palette lookups: allows up to 8k texels (if textures didn't look too bad that way, especially suitable for monochrome or low color range textures)
-non-square texture resolutions like 128x32 instead of 64x64, if applicable
-multi-texturing (most prominently used in Zelda OOT: the grass textures mostly found in the hyrule overworld uses multi-texturing) if memory bandwidth is not a problem.
-omit mip levels. Will introduce evil flickering, so use only where you can guarantee that this will almost never hurt: some skyboxes, background of scenes with fixed camera angle or billboards
Some folks even used custom DSP microcodes (similar to todays pixel/fragment shaders) that further allowed to lift some restrictions:
-allow for non-POT texture sizes (like 80x51, 43x95...)
-ultimatively go beyond the 4kB per texture limit by allowing things like clever memory swapping during a texture draw (think 80286 EMS memory banking or old VESA graphic modes in assembly :). Another technique that a few developers used to save bandwidth & space was to omit the Z-buffer altogether - but this limits the kind of geometry your game could have because not all graphics would get rendered correctly this way.
Can you name any examples of games that went the masochistic route?
@"Johnny Torpedo" I guess Indiana Jones does some of that. I know they coded custom microcode and they certainly did something with the Z-buffer, judging by the numerous geometry glitches you can find in some areas. I also stumbled on some occasional texture glitches.
