Hell yeah! Les is one of the reasons i started playing bass. I remember sitting around with my friends in High School listening to lots of Primus. Pork Soda is yummy.
Primus was an odd band in which Les Claypool's bass was the primary instrument... The trio were huge fans of Rush (the opening track of 'Frizzle Fry' started w/ the opening notes of Rush's 'YYZ' before cutting off) In 2004, Primus released a live DVD 'Hallucino-Genetics -live 2004'...which was a concert video of Primus performing the entire 'Frizzle Fry' album live, featuring the classic Primus line-up: Les Claypool (bass/ vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim 'Herb' Alexander (drums) Originally formed in the 80's in California, Primus were an odd trio that didn't fit in between the glam rock bands (Motley Crue, Ratt...) and thrash metal bands (Metallica, Exodus...) and every time they played a gig, the audience would become irate and start chanting, "Primus sucks!" ... and that became the band's motto 😂 By 1988, the original trio of Les Claypool (bass/ vocals), Todd Huth (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums) recorded the demo 'Sausage' and had written most of the songs on 'Frizzle Fry' that they performed live... but the response was abysmal... Both Huth and Lane quit Primus and were replaced by former Possessed guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander by 1989... They decided to record a show that year and released a live album independently as Primus' debut album 'Suck on this' in 1989. It sold enough to raise money & record 'Frizzle Fry' in the studio w/ co-producer Matt Winegar. It was released in 1990 on the indie label Caroline Records. Primus wrote weird and wacky lyrics that drew on heavy sarcasm and dark humor... 'Too many puppies' for example, was a song against gun violence in America ('Puppies' referred to young kids) ... 'John the fisherman' was one of the characters u would find in the deep country in America... Same w/ 'Mr. Knowitall'... Les Claypool drew a lot of inspiration from characters referred to as 'white trash' in America 😂 (One of his later songs 'My name is Mud' is a perfect example) 'Frizzle Fry' sold well against all odds and Primus was signed to Interscope Records in 1991 and released their 2nd studio album 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' which got MTV airplay and went gold (half a million copies sold) in the US.
So glad you reached to this album. One of the best of all time. Saw them do it in its entirety on Memorial Day in 2004… and found the exact same concert here on TH-cam just a couple months ago. How awesome to relive it.
I only recently discovered this channel and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised that anyone especially someone as young as Molly is listening to full albums in a single sitting from start to end. The dedication and commitment to the experience is based AF. Also I keep getting this feeling that I know her somehow (which I don't) but I worked it out.. She is a modern Winnie Cooper! Anyway I enjoy the content Miss Molly
Aw thanks for the sweet comment, I'm so happy that you're enjoying the videos! I've always loved listening to full albums and really immersing myself into a project, as opposed to just doing a single track by itself. Glad you're a fan of the format! :)
I also thought the bass was a guitar upon first listen on certain tracks. Nearly 20 years later and Les is my fav. bass player and I am a big fan of distortion on bass. Good stuff, Molly!
Im going to see Primus in 2 weeks! One of my favorite bands, Guerilla Toss is opening for them, definitely check this band out if you haven't already. I just listened to this album a week ago for the first time and I was blown away by the variety of sounds and styles. I can hear how this album may have influenced nu-metal bands like Korn. John the fisherman and Frizzle Fry are definitely my favorites. Awesome video!
Just an awesome band, Les claypool auditioned for Metallica on bass and they rejected him because he was "too good" for the band. The guitar playing is also so cool from Larry with how he plays around Les's bass
I discovered Primus more than 30 years ago and I never heard that last track before. How? But you nailed it, Primus is a unique beast. Always cartoony, often very dark when you dig a bit into it, but never taking themselves seriously. And you probably already knew, but the bass player is also the singer, which is pretty insane.
Molly! Yes! More Primus!!!!! Oh, if you do continue through the Primus disco, once you finish Pork Soda I highly suggest watching their ‘94 Woodstock performance.
The song spaghetti western is about a genre of film that is Italian western films which were later dubbed over in English. When they did the audio editing on those movies they often added tons of reverb to the foley work so when the cowboys walked in their boots there was often tons of reverb.
You have so much to dive into. Their debut EP and first 4 studio albums are perfect. Les Claypool's Frog Brigade. Claypool Lennon Delirium. If Les was involved, it should be on your list.
Yeah a few people have mentioned in the comments how the last track, Hello Skinny/Constantinople is a cover of The Residents, I'll definitely have to give them a listen too!
This might be the most excited I've been for one of your album listens! I highly recommend you keep going -- the first four Primus studio albums are all great and different. Past there, opinions differ, but I'm a big fan of Green Naugahyde as well.
Korn, Deftones, Incubus, Muse, Mastodon and even The Dillinger Escape Plan, have considered Primus an influence on their sound. For a bunch of oddities they have had a huge influence on many of the alt metal bands we today. Some people jokingly call the band "Tool for hillbillies" due to the out there nature almost otherworldly sound of the music similar to what Tool might do but a bit more wackiness and humor. Speaking of which, they are very close friends of Maynard James Keenan and were featured alongside with him in his Sessanta tour where he celebrated his 60th birthday alongside Keenan's bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, similar when he turned 50th (the Cinquetta tour in 2014) invited another group of friends of his, Failure (another band I hope you tackle in the future too. They are also super influential in the sound of many bands today).
Love Failure. I really hope Molly gets around to them. It's cool how so many of the bands I like have been good friends with each other for years. Let's me know I am in the right place.
For The Residents, there are tons of albums to choose from and some of them are wildly different. A good place to start is the album Duck Stab/Buster and Glen (1978), which features the songs Hello Skinny and Constantinople that Primus covered here, or The Commercial Album (1980). I also like Demons Dance Alone (2002)
I went on a Primus binge this past Saturday listening to this Album, Sailing the seas of cheese and Pork Soda. I actually enjoyed all 3 of them. My favorite off of Fizzle fry is Too Many Puppies and John the Fisherman. Also Les Claypool is the best Bassist, there I said it!
Haha, yeah Too Many Puppies is a fun one! So many standout tracks on this album, Primus really knows how to bring an incredibly unique flair to their music. I'll absolutely have to check out more albums from them! And thanks for naming their bassist, he is outstanding on this album. I love how much the bass really shines through.
@@mollyesanborn just wait until you get to Sailing the seas of cheese especially with the song Jerry was a race car driver. It was my introduction to primus thanks to a little well known video game called Tony Hawks Pro Skater.
I'm soooo glad you listened to Primus! They are an absolute treat as a music fan. Their next studio album, Sailing the Seas of Cheese is really amazing. Their third, Pork Soda is ridiculously good. All of their albums have that playfulness mixed with the dark, ominous vibe. Tales from the Punchbowl is also fantastic! I can't wait to see your journey into Primus unfold! 🤘🖤
Guitarist Larry LaLonde was in the band Possessed, who had major influence on what would become know as Death Metal, though they were at the time part of the Bay Area Trash scene which gave us Metallica and Exodus amoung others. Larry was a student of guitar wizard Joe Satriani, who also taught Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett and Alex Skolnick, from Testament. Larry met bassist/vocalist Les Claypool when they were both in another Bay Area band called Blind Illusion for the Sane Asylum record. That band was Thrash, but with some Prog Rock elements. There is live footage on here somewhere of a Blind Illusion show in Philadelphia that I was at. It's good footage and was a great show. Anyway, Larry and Les hit it off and this was the result. Not like anything else for sure. Great record. I saw Primus three or four times back in the day and it was always a good time. "Primus Sucks!" That's an running joke for Primus fans.
@@tetfol3315 Absolutely. LaLonde and Claypool were well known in the Bay Area and were able to get a great drummer. They probably had their choice of several. LaLonde's playing was so different than it had been in Possessed, but every once in awhile his roots shows through. When it's time to bring a little bit of heavy, well, he knows how to do that with the best of them.
I would imagine that fans would recommend either Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) or Pork Soda (1993). If you like their sound, they're both worth a listen.
Great album, great debut, great band. That last song wasn't part of the album, but it was probably included on some releases. Glad you like them, their still one of my all time favorite bands after all these years.
Just discovered your channel, I like your casual insight and the way you chop up the album to hit the main points is nice editing. I also really like that you're one-session listening to a full album, really helps put tracks in context. You get the good and bad. Looking forward to watching more If i were to make a suggestion, would love to see a video watching something from Devin Townsend, either Ziltoid the Omnicient (a Rock Opera album, lots of comedy, great music), or his first solo album, Ocean Machine: Biomech
Thanks so much, glad you're enjoying the full album format. I'll definitely keep Devin Townsend in mind for the future, I know his music has been suggested by some others as well.
Oh yeah, Molly. Thanks for doing Frizzle Fry. Saw them in 90 as opener and really don't think I knew anything except maybe one track from video on MTV. Imagine not just hearing but seeing them with their style and all? So unique. Then in college at party made a punch called Frizzle Fry, haha.
Oodles of talent on show here from all of them..I couldn't imagine any other band coming up with the theme to South Park..looking forward to seeing your reviews as you continue with their discography Molly
I could write a chapter in my life around this album. I had it on tape in 6th grade. I had played it so much and talked to everybody about them that would listen. All the words were worn off the cassette. Eventually, I split the cassette in half and put the tape into another cassette housing and continued to play it after it had been eaten and taped back together a number of times. It’s a treasure from my childhood. Eventually, I met Les Claypool a couple of times and Tim Alexander, and Brain too. I seen them seven times but all of those times were before 2003.
Frizzle Fry is an excellent place to start. It really introduces the band well. I still remember getting this when it first came out and being blown away by it.
Primus, a genre onto themselves. Can't wait to see your reaction, I just introduced them to my 5 year old Nephew and he loved them lol so generation spanning musicians for sure 🤘
My absolute favorite Primus record. Heavy, groovy, funky, dark at times, a truly unique record. Three absolute consummate top tier musicians. As a side note, and I"m sure someone else has said this...Larry Lalonde and Les Claypool played in a thrash band called Blind Illusion prior to Primus. David Silvera--former drummer of Korn- was HUGELY influenced by Tim Herb Alexander.
WOO! oh the fun begins. Got Sailing the seas of cheese ( you'll likely know 1 song off that) then Pork soda, Tales from the punch bowl, The Brown album, Antipop. the rest of their albums vary. ALSO, Primus did the South Park theme, cameo on the episode Chef Aid. Les did the theme for Robot Chicken and the band is in Bill and Ted's Bogus journey.
It’s easy to understand why Parker and Stone chose Primus to write/perform the South Park theme! Kindly continue with Seas of Cheese! Possibly my fave reactor, thanks for sharing!👍😎
The first time I heard them which was Jerry was a race car driver I was hooked and on,y listened to Primus for like 3 years. Yep I was obsessed and will forever love this music!
i mean, now you've GOT to listen to pork soda. in all seriousness, I enjoyed watching this a lot. I also liked your comment about their music being "intimate," especially because of Les' vocal delivery. would love to see you react to pork soda. It explores their darker sound muuuch more, and has some incredible moments. it's definitely a favorite of mine, not just from their discography but in general, too. i still haven't heard anything that sounds quite like them.
Yes ! You’re getting into primus now? You know what comes next… the residents … thumbs up if you want to see her review the residents possibly the commercial album maybe duck stab
Well the last track is a cover by The Residents, and I would suggest you check out their discography, thing is they've been around since the early 70s and they have a MASSIVE disography, at least 30 albums if not more, so it's up to you, but yeah you'll certainly have your work cut out for you!
Oh I had no idea it was a cover! Is the original also split like that between Hello Skinny/Constantinople? It fits in really well on this album though, it suits Primus' musical style very well. I'll definitely have to give The Residents a listen at some point.
You should give Clutch a listen sometime. They are a heavy and quirky band from the 90s that had modest success and toured with a bunch of bands you've already heard. Clutch (1995) is my personal favorite album, but they've got a bunch and are still putting out music now. The Elephant Riders (1998) and Blast Tyrant (2004) are also awesome.
What's awesome is Primus unique instrument lineup, with Claypool's bass taking a lead position with a rhythm guitar as backup (and every band member is incredible to boot) I'm aching for you to give Queens of the Stone Age a go, Songs for the Deaf is one of the loudest albums ever put to print~
I really enjoy your reactions, when I see those headphones (as a collector / fanatic), I want you to hear these albums the way I do. Some He400SE's, a basic dac/amp and a little eq - its on another level.
“Too Many Puppies” was about the Gulf War. If you know the term “War Dogs” its a play on that saying puppies instead of dogs, referencing all the teenagers being sent over seas
Molly if you liked Primus you should check out "Duckstab" by The Residents. Les Claypool was heavily influenced by The Residents. Also would love to see you finish your journey with The Smashing Pumpkins original lineup and check out Machina the Machines of God.
Primus was my introduction into the weird and wild world of EXTAORDINARY music. Primus is a fascinating look into what a remarkable bassist can do (given a band willing to go along with an insane person's rhythm and vision).
Yay Primus! They were the only band to have their own section on itunes and are largely undefinable due to them being such a great combo of jazz/metal/funk/rock elements but not really being in just one. Please do a couple more albums to hear while they dont sound similar they all sound like Primus. Also recommend two of Les' other projects Flying Frog Brigade and Oysterhead. Hello again after watching the whole video. Info dump incoming. So as far as the band goes Les Claypool (bass and vocals), Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and Tim "Herb" Alexander. The bass is very much the lead instrument while Larry usually plays some atmospheric, soloish stuff as backup on guitar is very different than what you'll hear most bands play. Les has described Tim's Drum playing as "If a gorilla took a jaunty stroll on a drumset." Somehow it all works beautifully. Primus' music was a breath of fresh air when I first heard them in the early 90's because as you said they are very unique. The songs tend to be about quirky people or experiences the band has had over the years. Too Many Puppies was about the Gulf war and American military in general training young kids, or "puppies" to go to war so your description was spot on. Hello Skinny/Constantinople are covers of songs by the Residents. A VERY weird band for VERY weird people but I love them as well. Primus is my favorite band of all time so I implore you to continue to at least Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda, the golden 3 of the band so to speak. They change drummers later with Bryan "Brain" Mantia and recorded Brown Album and Antipop. Bryan's drum playing is also very unique and different from Tim's but also fir the band wonderfully. Les also did the theme songs for South Park and Robot Chicken tv shows.
cool reaction Molly. I saw these guys back in the day with Anthrax and Public Enemy. Their Sailing the Seas of Cheese album was already out then and it's as weird and cool as the debut IMO.
I’m actually seeing them live for the first time in 10 days lol. But yeah, pretty good album. I’d say do their albums in order. Pork Soda is my favorite Primus album. Some of my favorites on Frizzle Fry are Too Many Puppies, John The Fisherman, and The Toys Go Winding Down.
Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite albums. You have to watch les claypool play. He has a lot of haters because hes so unique in his playing style. Most of them cant copy it so they dont get it. Earliest work is the best but they have a few gems on newer stuff as well. My only question is where is your ring sweet girl some lucky guy or girl must have asked by now lol.
I sure hope you listen to more Primus! When I think of 90's psychedelia, I think of the sound this band conjures into existence. Primus can be ominous, they can get a little bit old timey, a lot of bit funky, and there's always excellent musicianship from every angle.
Now here is a incredibly unique band....I love this guys. Have ever tried some time react to 1 song instead of a hole Album form any band at all. You might get more out of one song then the hole album. 1 album 1 video as you do right now. 1 album 12 songs 12 separate videos if U were to do by songs
“I’m sure there’s a deeper meaning to these lyrics, but I’m just imagining a puppy with a gun in its hand” lol I’m glad you caught onto the fact that there’s probably a deeper meaning to the lyrics, but Too Many Puppies has more meaning than most Primus songs tbh. Usually Primus is very literal with their lyrics, and if they say “a puppy with a gun in its hand” the songs most likely just about a puppy with a gun in its hand lmaoo. This song actually does have a deeper meaning though, the puppies represent soldiers. “Too Many Puppies that’re trained not to bark at the sight of blood that must be spilled so that we can maintain our oil fields”. Whenever you realize what the deeper meaning is, all of the lyrics make a lot more sense

Originally formed in the 80's in California, Primus were an odd trio that didn't fit in between the glam rock bands (Motley Crue, Ratt...) and thrash metal bands (Metallica, Exodus...) and every time they played a gig, the audience would become irate and start chanting, "Primus sucks!" ... and that became the band's motto 😂
By 1988, the original trio of Les Claypool (bass/ vocals), Todd Huth (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums) recorded the demo 'Sausage' and had written most of the songs on 'Frizzle Fry' that they performed live... but the response was abysmal...
Les Claypool drew a lot of inspiration from characters referred to as 'white trash' in America 😂 (One of his later songs 'My name is Mud' is a perfect example)
'Frizzle Fry' sold well against all odds and Primus was signed to Interscope Records in 1991 and released their 2nd studio album 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' which got MTV airplay and went gold (half a million copies sold) in the US.
Molly definitely needs to see Hallucinogenetics! The camera work is insane!
Please keep going with all Primus albums! It's great watching you react.
Noted, I'll definitely have to do more of their discography here on the channel!
It really fits the Mr. Bungle comparison. It's like they're on separate wings in the mental ward. So good though.
lmao that comparison is so good i love both of these bands so i approve
I remember hearing this for the first time when it came out. It was extraordinary and unique - I love it.
Love The Residents influence throughout their catalog.
I find a lot to like on every Primus album! So happy I got to see them live a few times.
Stellar discography, you wont be disappointed (for a while lol)
Les is a legend and musical genius. Also, Tim Alexander is another legend in his own right. Most of their albums are bangers!
PRIMUS! One of the originators and Funk Metal greats!
I love their style! Such a fun band, and fantastic bass too.
@@mollyesanbornFrizzle Fry my favorite album from them! It’s their funkiest! PRIMUS SUCKS!!!
Heck yeah, Primus sucks! ❤
They've got such a unique sound to their music, I look forward to hearing more!
@@mollyesanborn Thank you for picking the best bands to react to! Sailing the seas of cheese is absolute choice 👌
@@SomerankeroffYT of course, y'all always come through with the killer band recommendations 🔥
Language,Bro!!!
I’ve listened to Frizzle Fry 1000 times. It is so good. I’m going to enjoy watching you listen to this.
Lalonde's playing for Primus was unique in metal world but 90's was good decade for that edge. Also let's no forget fantastic drummer in Primus.
These are my friends
This is Primus's debut studio album.
Their first album, if I haven't been disillusioned my whole life, was a live album called Suck On This
Correct. I was there at The Berkeley Square w/ Bluchunks and Fungo Mungo
So cool. I love this album!
They bring such a unique style to this album, Primus is definitely a band I'll have to delve into some more.
Discovered Primus as a young lad playing Guitar Hero II… John the Fisherman was that song and man I thought it was so unique and great.
Yes, I absolutely love how unique their sound is. Never really heard any other band like them.
Just discovered your channel, I like your casual insight and the way you chop up the album to hit the main points is nice editing. I also really like that you're one-session listening to a full album, really helps put tracks in context. You get the good and bad. Looking forward to watching more
If i were to make a suggestion, would love to see a video watching something from Devin Townsend, either Ziltoid the Omnicient (a Rock Opera album, lots of comedy, great music), or his first solo album, Ocean Machine: Biomech
Thanks so much, glad you're enjoying the full album format. I'll definitely keep Devin Townsend in mind for the future, I know his music has been suggested by some others as well.
Finally, someone reacted to this album!!!
🤘
Oh yeah, Molly. Thanks for doing Frizzle Fry. Saw them in 90 as opener and really don't think I knew anything except maybe one track from video on MTV. Imagine not just hearing but seeing them with their style and all? So unique. Then in college at party made a punch called Frizzle Fry, haha.
Oodles of talent on show here from all of them..I couldn't imagine any other band coming up with the theme to South Park..looking forward to seeing your reviews as you continue with their discography Molly
Primus covering The Residents (Hello Skinny) is just golden! Both Bay area artists IINM, and both BLOODY WEIRD. Love 'em both.
I still remember getting this when it first came out and being blown away by it.
love your reactions, please consider visiting mgmt and their discography. i think you would really enjoy it ! good bodies of work every album
Primus, a genre onto themselves. Can't wait to see your reaction, I just introduced them to my 5 year old Nephew and he loved them lol so generation spanning musicians for sure 🤘
the greatest bass-player/frontman of this genre,.. in my opinion...also the writers and performers of the southpark maintheme!
Yes that's true, maybe because they are the only band of that genre lol
you read my mind
Nice, glad you were looking forward to this one! :)
This album is amazing and I think their next is even better. Great reaction!
Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing more from Primus!
This was their roughest sounding album but their later works are sonic rapture. Another awesome reaction your objectivity is so refreshing
Yes I look forward to continuing with their discography. Thanks for watching! :)
Another favorite, so many great albums and certainly no one else like em...you must add Fishbone to your list too!
Thanks, I'll make sure Fishbone is on there!
WOO! oh the fun begins.
Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, pls.
I really hope you do more Primus, I cannot wait to see what you have to say about the bass break in "Tommy The Cat".
Absolutely, I'm planning on a Sailing The Seas Of Cheese reaction soon!
literally starts with my favorite Primus song
Great review as always 😊
Thanks so much! :)
My first concert was Primus back in 1996. It was nuts and rowdy asf. Best memory ever!!
i mean, now you've GOT to listen to pork soda. in all seriousness, I enjoyed watching this a lot.
I'll absolutely plan on a Pork Soda video as well, I'm excited to hear it!
Yes ! You’re getting into primus now? You know what comes next… the residents … thumbs up if you want to see her review the residents possibly the commercial album maybe duck stab
I'll definitely consider doing The Residents at some point as well!
Love your confused bass face as these tracks play, hahahaa!
Haha, yeah this album was certainly entertaining!
"The Commercial Album" is must listen!
Also Robot Hive, great band.
My favorite is Elephant Riders.
You need to listen to Sailing the seas of cheese now for sure
I forgot how good this first album is. Even though Primus sucks.
What's awesome is Primus unique instrument lineup, with Claypool's bass taking a lead position with a rhythm guitar as backup (and every band member is incredible to boot)
I'm aching for you to give Queens of the Stone Age a go, Songs for the Deaf is one of the loudest albums ever put to print~
I really enjoy your reactions, when I see those headphones (as a collector / fanatic), I want you to hear these albums the way I do. Some He400SE's, a basic dac/amp and a little eq - its on another level.
I know you didn't do video reactions but Primus music videos are something else.
Groundhog's Day is my favorite song on this, although I also really like the drum groove of Spegetti Western.
“Too Many Puppies” was about the Gulf War. If you know the term “War Dogs” its a play on that saying puppies instead of dogs, referencing all the teenagers being sent over seas
Also “Groundhogs day” is just about the monotony of working a dead end job and expecting something to change in your life
I do believe it's "I do believe in Cap'n Crunch, for I am the Frizzle Fry". As opposed to all the other things he doesn't believe in.
Molly if you liked Primus you should check out "Duckstab" by The Residents. Les Claypool was heavily influenced by The Residents. Also would love to see you finish your journey with The Smashing Pumpkins original lineup and check out Machina the Machines of God.
Yes! Please do more Primus! You will find it interesting!
Hello Skinny/Constantinople are actually covers of two songs by The Residents which is one of Primus biggest inspirations
Primus was my introduction into the weird and wild world of EXTAORDINARY music. Primus is a fascinating look into what a remarkable bassist can do (given a band willing to go along with an insane person's rhythm and vision).
Hello Skinny/Constantinople are covers of an avant garde musical group called The Residents. They've put out some wild stuff over the years.
I'll definitely have to give The Residents a listen at some point too, I'd love to hear the original version.
@@mollyesanborn Fair warning, they are really not for everyone lol.
Les also did the theme songs for South Park and Robot Chicken tv shows.
this album is a masterpiece. stank face is inevitable with most of the basslines
cool reaction Molly.
Really look forward to more Primus albums... Would also love to see a reaction to Ween - Chocolate and Cheese!
Toys go winding down slaps so hard, love it!
