Lenovo's wave of mega silent firings in early 2023 were absolutely despicable. They laid off thousands of really great people after posting record profits and bragging about moving up the Forbes list each quarter in their "All Hands" NA org sales meetings to those people that moved the needle for them. They ruined thousands of people's lives who relocated and rented or purchased new homes just to join the US sales organization during the digital boom of the pandemic and increase in business for them, forcing them to lose their homes and become homeless. Their warranty process is atrocious and considered terrible by anyone who has had to deal with service claims on top of this.

Great work Andrew! always great to see you with the latest ThinkPad coverage. I was really excited as I was thinking of picking up a X1 Carbon to be my daily computer when I want to leave my P1 Gen 6 at home. Unfortunately with this Gen 12 I feel like I might be skipping this one. I feel that this generation took some steps forward but took more steps backwards in my honest opinion.
    Steps forward:
    1. 120 hz OLED display: Finally a high refresh rate OLED display, I just wished that it was an adaptive refresh rate monitor to help save battery life.
    2. New intel core ultra processors: Meteorlake proves to help keep the heat down and innovate with efficiency.
    3. Lighter and smaller footprint (at least from what it looks like): Very light and portable while maintaining this display size is impressive.
    Steps backward:
    1. Communication bar: I personally hate the way this looks, disrupts the design and I don't care if it makes it easier to open. Plus the camera is mediocre.
    2. Keyboard layout: I am not mad at the Ctrl and Fn swap as I swap them out anyways using the Lenovo Advantage software, but I hate the fact that the power button and fingerprint sensor had to be 2 separate things. It seems like a waste space for the button to be there.
    3. Soldered RAM: self explanatory
    4. Battery life: I appreciate the introduction to a better display but at least increase the battery size to compensate for the power draw, I'd rather sacrifice weight and size if they can at least keep it around the same size as the last gen that would be great.
    5. Speakers: So disappointing that they are taking a step backwards here when I always appreciate the quality of the speakers they put (although not MacBook Pro level) they were good enough.
    6. Price: So many new thin and light Core Ultra laptops with great screens and inputs are coming out and the competition isn't what it used to be, not to mention the competitiveness of Apple's MacBooks now this seems to be an oversight on Lenovo's part.
I love the ThinkPads and this was the generation of the X1 Carbon I was looking forward to the most but I think I am going to have to wait until the newer versions come out.

And it's pretty clear from the video the new 12th gen speakers aren't bad either, they are more muffled in the mid and high frequencies, but they have more bass than the Gen 10/11, which is welcome as the Gen 10/11 speakers are quite bright sounding.

I sold my 10th gen X1C because its battery life was so poor with the OLED screen and the fans would come on at an annoyingly loud noise level as soon as I launched any program on it. Good to see they're improving on the noise aspect with gen 12, at least, even if the battery life has not improved. I think choosing an OLED screen on a thin and light was a mistake since it drained too much power.

Andrew, thank you for your profound review. I've been looking at another Lenovo ThinkPad to upgrade my current T470. I have been looking at the X1C Gen12 but I'd like one that has a 15.9" screen (more visual real estate for trading when I travel), and powerful enough to run multiple trading platforms simultaneously while on a zoom as well. Would you recommend the ThankPad P1 Gen 6? I think Lenovo is too conservative with the upgrading of their laptops. As you mentioned, The Wifi 7 card would have been a great upgrade.

One other aspect that pisses me off was that newer gen of Intel Arc graphics was supposed to be a quantum leap insofar as integrated graphics performance was concerned, and yet, it's all the same old subpar stuttery performance. If I'm paying 2.5k for a laptop I expect it to handle some tasks effortlessly, including video editting and some "casual" gaming on the side, like WoW or LoL.
And yet, none of the above applies to this extremely overpriced machine. Sometimes it feels as if the thinkpad brand is largely an excuse for lenovo to put a premium price on average to bellow-average products, which happen to use the excellent old IBM design language for the exterior.
At this point, a Macbook Air or a Macbook Pro are a much better investment than the X1 line. Cheaper too, with much better battery life, better keyboard (!!!) and with an OS which offers much deeper integration with the hardware.

@Andrew_Marc_David great job as always Andrew, watching your reviews is always a pleasure and one of my favorites. Wish you keep that way as long as possible in the future.
Concerning this 12 gen X1 model, I've got two questions coming to my mind...
First, at @9:47, benchmark with Cinebench in single-core mode : why the hell is the result so poor, even compared to the models with Ryzen 7 7840U? Getting even worse in multicore.... While on the other side this model achieves a great battery life for model with OLED screen. I must admit that I didn't expect such a great time, when one know that T/P series with OLED screen can't last more than 5-6 hours under light workload with a 7840U, I won't even speak about models with Intel chips.... On the other side, the Yoga Slim 7 gen8 with OLED screen and 7840S (which is not an U neither a HS)also lasts near 8-9 hours under light workload... I really don't understand this mismatch from Lenovo, meaning why they can't succeed in achieving homogeneity.
Second question, @14:51, you said Lenovo will introduce the "sensel" haptic touchpad. This touchpad is already present on the Z series, but you're handing a model in your hands that does remind a T/P series model, or even a Thinkbook? Which Thinkpad model is this? And have you any informations when Lenovo is going to introduce haptic touchpad in these models?
Best regards Andrew, keep going this way 😉

The 2024 ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is a Premium laptop for sure. The screen is gorgeous, the 1080p webcam and the internal mic quality are good. The only thing that some people may find lacking is the quality of the sound from the internal speakers versus Gen 11 which sounds fuller in my opinion. Great review! I purchased a Gen 8 back in 2020. It was great for me. However, I found it to be too small for schoolwork at the time. As an Apple user, I bought an MBP 16-inch and used that for years, and I let the ThinkPad sit in the box. The ThinkPad has a SIM slot, so recently, I fired it back up and instantly realized why I originally bought this computer. It just checks all the boxes for me. So, would you guys buy this instead of the usual MacBook Air ? I’m really trying to convince myself to skip Apple for this one and venture in the pc world. I’d most likely use it for stock market while on the go..

I don’t like the reverse notch design in Lenovo laptops. Unfortunately, this design has spread to the X1 carbon. A business laptop should look cleaner.
Also, both USB-C ports are on the same side. You can’t charge it on either side. Is it really that hard to put one USB-C port on each side?

What would you recommend between those options:
    - Macbook air m2. based model
    - Thinkpad E14 Gen 6 - 16gb/ 1tbssd
    - x1 carbon gen 8 - 16gb
    - Asus vivobook/zenbook
    Mainly for:
    - programming (not professionally)
    - writing
    - browinsg
I want the best trackpad and keyboard experience and a decent webcam for zoom calls. I don't mind speakers,.

While I like that the X1 shows just how thin and light you can get with a laptop, there are tradeoffs. What will be very interesting is when the new Qualcomm Snapdragon ThinkPad and Dell Latitudes show up in a couple of months, now those I will want to see the reviews on!

I do wish the 120hz display was more widely available. I don't really care about resolution - 1080p has always been fine with me on smaller, portable devices. I just wish the 120hz was available on Thinkpads that didn't cost this much.

Gen 11 sounds better that Gen 12 wen music is played on speakers, Gen 11 has a richer sound in terms of deeper bass and clear treble, Gen 12 sounds muffled.
Got a question though, do they offer it with a lower resolution screen of HD+ but with 120hz display coz that will be definately the best screen? Non-touch screen for me and one in Silver and not in matte black will do. A bigger glass trackpad without the buttons is a refeshing change and a welcome.

I have a gen 6 and it refuses to die, the keyboard on thinkpads are the best typing experience imo...Ive tried a macbook pro 14 and dell xps 15 and was let down with the typing experience. BTW I hate the new xps design, I want physical buttons especially the ESP key...Im still debating what to get, the macbook display and battery life was wonderful, just not sure about mac os even though I have a dell precision workstation with 11 pro

Lenovo has refused to place the 2 USB-C ports on a daughterboard or use a 2-piece connector like Apple Macbook does. If you damage a connector (which is not difficult to do), the motherboard needs to be replaced. This one appears to be no different from previous generations.

Hello, Mr. Andrew, I would like to thank you for the videos that you provide on your channel to help me choose the best portable device that suits all work. I hope that you will help me choose the best laptop this year through your visit to the CSI exhibition, and it will have the best performance and efficiency, and I will be able to work productively, design, and play in it, and it will also be of the highest quality. A wonderful screen and a good and wonderful Windows system in all aspects. It should be in a budget of 3-4 thousand dollars. Should I wait or buy? I hope you will help me. Thank youtr for everything.

Video camera quality is very very poor I'd have to say. Lenovo really needs to either put a seriously stellar camera, or to ditch the ugly camera bar sticking out from the lid.
And it'll be nice if they make physical click buttons + haptic trackpad combo availalbe.

This certainly gives the impression of being the best there is at what it does... except maybe with that webcam.
The price is beyond what I can justify at the moment, but if I were an executive type who just didn't want to compromise on portability and power (short of a dedicated gpu anyway) it would probably be near the top of my list.

The speakers are such an awkward downgrade. They were one of the few things that were better compared to the T14 model. ThinkPads have always had shitty speakers. Disappointing to hear they made them even worse... Don't lenovo engineers realise business men and students also watch videos oder make zoom calls?
