  • In the second episode of Concepts of Fighting Games, I go over the concept of reactions and why there's much more to it than just reaction time. Why is anticipation so helpful? What should you even anticipate during a match? Is your spacing really that important? (yes)

‘These reactions required mastery of the CONCEPT of reactions, not just reaction time.’ - another great video Alan. Great job!

I like the attention pie chart idea! Fighting games are such a fun way to explore the limits of your focus, attention, and reaction.

there is another element beyond natural reaction time besides anticipation that is worth mentioning: finding the earliest or most obvious thing to look for that definitively means that what you are looking for is happening.
For example, even the person with the best reaction time in the world is not going to be able to do a hit confirm if they don’t know what the hit spark in the game looks like.

I mainly play FPS titles, but I found this video really useful for shooters, especially the parts on anticipation and allocating focus to the right thing. My reflexes used to work against me because I'd usually focus on too many things and panic shoot when one thing goes wrong, but with some prediction and situational awareness, it's much easier to react correctly and I outplay many opponents by doing that. Thanks!

This reminds me of that nasty parry you had on Justakid last week of season 1 of Street Fighter League. He loves doing EX Fuharenkyaku into Vtrigger 1 activation and you stuffed it for the final play of the set. One of the more memorable plays from Season 4 (the reactions were hilarious too). At first glance it looks like a reaction, but Justakid throws out that EX move a lot to activate. You knew A - he wanted to activate (situational awareness). B - He was going to activate with that EX move (anticipation), and C. - you were spaced far enough for the first hit of that EX to whiff, allowing you to parry the second hit (spacing).

What an amazing video! It's so well-done that the advice applies to any fighting game, such as Brawlhalla or Grand Chase. Spoken like a true UGM player!
Edit: but for real amazing video go team frost :o

Go team frost, anyway this helped a lot, I'm that scrub that can only beat good players like 1 game out of 20, and my way of anti airing is literally sitting there or walking back until they jump, and good players catch on to that and jump at such good times against me
