asking questions like “what EQ does my snare need” is maybe a complicated way to think about this kind of problem - another approach is to ask “who is playing low mids? who is playing sub bass? who is on presence?” like you’re building a team. if some instrument is already taking the sub bass responsibility, then you know your kick doesn’t need to be sub-heavy, etc. if nobody is playing “presence”, you need to assign an instrument to that role. this also works for “who is in the front/who is in the back”, “who is left/right/middle”.
Playing with the EQs has helped me a lot, especially with the snares. I love boosting the low end of the snare, I find it brings some nice warmth to the drum pattern.
@@NavieD yyeah deff gonna try this out, & wondering if you have any in depth guides to the sorta beats you used in this video? like the overexplained, bc if not i recommend doing it for that style! (pls & thx)
- It's probably worth explaining to viewers that the 808 sounds you're talking about ARE kick sounds. They're just being used as a bass alongside another kick. The 808 is a drum machine after all. - One of the most important mixing lessons I learned: Cut, don't boost. When you boost, you're raising the noise floor on the track as well. You're also raising the overall volume of your mix, which you'll just end up counteracting later to avoid clipping. If you cut the other frequencies instead with shelves or bandpasses instead and only boost sparingly, you'll end up with a much cleaner, clearer mix that gives you more control.
That’d be ideal but in many cases as a sample based producer you have to boost samples just to make it work. But what helps is adding another EQ onto the boosted sample
Navie, I've been watching your videos for so long and it's heartwarming to see how you evolve and overcome shyness, while helping upcoming producers in many ways. You are an amazing human being and even though we never met, I feel like we are friends. Peace!
such an important video that needs to be constantly reminded. I focus most of my time on the rhythm section, so this speaks volumes. to me. Thanks again my wizard friend.
Anyone who doesn't reach for compression right off the bat is doing something right in my book. Bump that snare! Bump that clap! I don't know why your videos are so massively more informative than others I listen to, but maybe that's why i click like and I subscribe.
I've always been taught to decrease or cut unwanted frequencies to boost the frequency that I need. But, Navie gave us a stamp of approval. Cut to the chase and crank that needed frequency up.😝👍
Most samples from kits are EQed to with each other but need some adjustments when working with other samples. Instead of turning a sample or drum up turn the eq up in one frequency. This is why u want start mixing with some headroom, like -12, it won't stay that low but then when u start doing additive EQ you have room to turn it up.
Another great fix is layering samples with more stuff in the area it's lacking! And if you have lots of subby kicks that don't have much use, consider maybe making something DJ Premier-y that's really minimal in terms of basslines but has tons of low-end in drums
This is really helpful, sometimes a 2nd clap, snare with more body can help too. And this explanation of the 808 who hits hard, its typical a Kick at the beginning, was really on point :)
I love your videos, I don’t know if it’s because you explain it in a way I understand well or if we have similar taste, but unlike so many TH-camrs your videos are the only ones that really gets my creative juices flowing and motivates me. I don’t know why but I always come up with fresh ideas and get new motivation from these vids. Thanks for making a difference man!
Also the point demonstrated with two kicks, this is exactly why I usually load up to 5 different kicks up to be ready, just to switch between them and check which is best in context
EQ-sidechaing is another trick you can use. Especially if you really like the way your kick sounds and you don't want to change the sound of your kick by boosting frequencies.
It’s also dependent on style and preference (you get better at this once you understand the effects of EQing). Diet Coke by Pusha T has no sub bass presence in the entire track (not even in the kick), but it works.
@@NavieD Very well you? In the last live you talked about a group, the death grips. I listened to them and found them very interesting, especially the production. Why don't you do a tutorial? 🤔🙏
