    I really like how this man actually uses basic tools and materials anyone can afford. Most of the "DIY" guys on TH-cam have a 40' X 50' shop filled with 50,000 dollars worth of equipment and still don't do as good of a job. Well done sir!

    Hey Mike Awesome build man. I took your advice myself I just love what you've done and I bought the mortar mix and I made a flat looking stone table top and put my gas firepit through it. I'm not quite finished yet I'm still building the base I'm using Portland cement and the rapid set mortar mix chicken wire and old cloth and old towels, kind of like paper mache. To create a base that looks like an old tree stump. I'll send you a picture of it when I'm done it may be another couple weeks yet as I'm procrastinating I'm working on other projects. First things first right. Thanks Mike love all your build so far and I've enjoyed your commentary thanks again.
    condolences to you and your family.

    Super fun build. We actually did a whole outside kitchen with this method!! Your the best. My fireplace did crack. I think it was because I didn’t leave enough tolerance between the mortar and the pan. Or it was the set control. Anyways thanks for making our backyard better!$

    Thanks for the great tutorial.
    I followed it and it worked out fine, but here are a couple of extra tips for newbies like me:
    I got Quickcrete's countertop mix and that already includes flow control stuff
    If you have little experience with concrete go to Quickcrete's site to see video tutorials on your product.
    Quickcrete suggests using painter's tape in your forms' corner seams, an easy option if you suck at caulking.
    Your pan will have enough of a rim to allow 1/4 -1/2 inch gap between concrete and pan- definitely make your center-gap form 1/4 inch oversize in each dimension in order to accommodate for heat shrinking/expansion in order to prevent cracking.
    Also, somewhere deep in the comments EasyFirePits recommends adding Pea Gravel in the pan up to the level of the gas outlet holes because they retain heat better.

    Can rapid set can hold up to the heat or is the majority of the heat contained within the metal trough?

  • @TJWhiteStar
    @TJWhiteStar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have a 3D printer (even the $100 from Amazon) you Could print the design in say ABS or PETG (Needs to be something that can handle some heat because of the exothermic reaction in Cement) and coat it in mold release and that should hopefully give you a repeatable pattern.
    3D printers are definitely not just for silly toys, they can be used for soooo many useful projects etc (I have used to to print replacement brackets and plastic parts for my cabinets, kitchen paper towel holder, car washer bottle, microwave etc)

    1st Attempt: the first 2 bags of mortar mix went off in about 5 minutes. Complete fail.
    2nd Attempt: Added way more water and used "Set-Control" to slow the process down. Took a couple hours to fully set. Wife and I were about to flip, her side was a little to heavy for her and it got dropped and it broke. So after eating up the whole weekend, 5 bags of mortar, hours of building a the template, several injuries, and hours of cutting out our stencil designs I am giving up on concrete until I've emotionally recovered.

    Great video! I recently made a propane fire table of my own and have a couple suggestions. I found out the hard way that a heat shield is absolutely necessary for safety. The bottom of the stainless steel burner can get extremely hot, which melted part of one of the gas hoses and slowly leaked out propane until it basically ignited under the table. After that i built a barrier between the pan and the tank with panning metal (air space between) and also swapped out the rubber hoses for stainless steel (amazon). Also an air mixer is a nice addition for a cleaner flame!

    • @grantnelson39
      @grantnelson39 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Zach! I had a similar concern when I saw that the propane tank was stored directly under the fire pan. Can you elaborate more on how you built your heat shield? Is it really as simple as adding two layers of panning metal with an air pocket in between? How did you fix the metal to the table? And did you just cut out holes in the metal to run the hoses from the pan to the tank? Appreciate your help!

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it was very windy that day so the flame burnt the top and it did actually crack. My suggestion is to not use it on a windy day basically haha

    • @hunterevanson
      @hunterevanson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't make your top out of cement. I suppose you could use bricks for the top, or even to line the basin with brick instead of butting the edge right up to the cement. Then the flame is transferring heat directly to the cement. It might last a little longer that way...

    • @737smartin
      @737smartin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Builds ...I’m glad you mentioned here that the top actually cracked VERY early in use from the heat, but a RED FLAG this important must be highlighted in the show notes! I’m sure you don’t want your viewers to make a product that’s so likely to fail. “Don’t use it on windy days” is simply not realistic.

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very good question which looking back I wish I would have answered that in the video. The epoxy turns the finish pure black no matter what color the epoxy is. Sealing first prevents that from happening so you can see that beautiful blue

    Why you don't use Cement All instead of MortarMix ? It's the same time to dry, but the Cement All is way smoother because it does not have little rock in it like the Mortar mix have. THANK YOU ! (IM asking because that's what the worker at Home Depot told me when I went to buy mortar mix)

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s true but, when you use my method, you can tell the difference between the two so why not save yourself $7 a bag when you get the same results. Also, the Cement All doesn’t have quite the same dramatic effect that the Flow Control has on the Mortar Mix

    Wow what a lovely table! Awesome work m8 - oh the inspiration for my garden kitchen/BBQ build!

  • @jayryan7307
    @jayryan7307 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should definitely cut some sort of relief holes/gaps in the bottom of your wood base. A slow leak in your tank and your sitting near a bomb with a fire on top! Cut on bottom because Propane gas sinks (NOT rises) with oxygen. You’re probably ok because your base obviously isn’t air tight, but peace of mind and longer life! But great idea. I made one of these after I saw your first video on concrete tables!

    Nice project, thanks. I did a top last month with a hole for a round Weber kettle grill - it's 2.5" thick and reinforced with both rebar & wire mesh. There is a minimum of 8" of concrete surface all the way around the grill. When I fired up the grill the first time the heat cracked the top (in one of the wider surfaces), fortunately there is enough steel in there to keep it together. Are you concerned that the inside corners of your fire pit hole will crack?

    I am obsessed with your videos. I have made three small side tables using this technique. Each one has less worm holes than the last. I am using a recip without a blade to vibrate the heck out of the mold. You videos show you tapping with a mallet and the pour comes out smooth. What am I missing?

    I have watched your other videos and have a couple questions.
    What made you use rebar in this but not other tops you have done.
    Also, your list here mentioned set control but you don't talk about it in the video. Do you recommend the set control? If so, how many per 55 lb bag?
    Thanks

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, you want to use metal reinforcement in everything concrete. Sometimes I just try to show off the strength of the Rapid Set products. I don’t do that anymore because I had too many viewers have issues.
      You can use 1 to 4 packets of Set Control in one bag of 55lbs product but it’s completely optional. One packet of Set Control will get you an additional 15 to 20 more minutes of working time. The more packets you use, the more working time you get.

    This is my next project according to my wife. Do you happen to have any kind of discount code to use with easyfirepits ? The link you posted is only the first part, the Burner and Insert will set you back another $2-300 so all in all you're looking at $500 for a fireplace insert. Thanks for all you do, I cannot wait to make this.

    How do you guesstimate how many bags you need for a particular form? About how many cubic feet of pour do you get from one bag? It seems like it's about a half cubic foot per bag based on how full your 5 gallon bucket gets.

    • @MichaelBuilds
      @MichaelBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes these bags are half a cubic foot each. So your form is LxWxH divided by .5 and that should get you the qty of bags you need. I also can figure it out real quick by knowing that one bag will do a 2’x2’ square at 1 1/2” thick

    I was inspired by your earlier video, the concrete table and started experimenting. After seeing the fire table I jumped in and tried to recreate your magic. It was awesome for the first 48 hours and then... well then it broke. I am assuming that the hole was too tight to the metal pan and when it heated up it expanded causing the top to break. Do you have any suggestions?

    Question. Could you have printed the pattern in reverse and sprayed it onto the back sticker part of the foam before cut out?
    Then cut from the back side and when you pull the paper off the foam, the pattern would have come with.

  • @terrythomas790
    @terrythomas790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great stuff here! Love it! I'd like to know how heavy is that concrete top? One suggestion I think that would be very helpful. When you lay the rebar, run the two long pieces closer to the ends of the countertop , and lay the short ones in between them, not pass the ends of the longer ones, like you did in the video. . If someone lifted the table to move someday, Im thinking that end might snap off with the weight of the completed table . If you do it like I say, the lengths of the longer rebar would make it stronger, and keep it from breaking. I hope my explanation makes sense to you? lol

    • @nicolepiccini1370
      @nicolepiccini1370 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      so how do you do this when they come in 2 ft 4 ft and 6 ft? Sorry we are very new to this sort of thing and our first attempt just cracked. I am not sure we have the tools to cut rebar if that is the case?

    going to try the table this weekend. I made a metal frame, and the form is done. Got 3 bags of mortar and 3 bags of "water on a bag." I 3d printed a palm tree using flex filament for the inlay, so we will see how that works out. I'm so worried about cracking the table, as I tried making a test top with countertop mix and it cracked in all 4 inset corners all the way thru.

    subscribed..... This is kinda what im looking to do with my build however, I want to incorporate a marine grade bluetooth stereo, and led lighting. I was also going to have removable solar power panels to charge a battery for the radio and then hide them inside the box when not in use. The only thing i may change is adding a sliding pull out door for the tank, on full extension ball bearing slides. I am a woodworker and have also worked with metals. Concrete is not my thing, but this looks easy. Thanks and good job!

    That is excellent, Michael! Regarding the custom cut paper design, my wife uses something called a Cricut for scrapbooking- it's like a little CNC machine for light to heavy paper & thin wafer wood stock . It would be perfect for these designs, since you can scan any design into the computer (or use a stock drawing) & it cuts it out. Thanks for the video. I'm definitely going get into concrete countertops.

    First time I've seen you. I enjoy your sense of humor. Now for the constructive criticism part. You should not leave the valve on the propane tank open when this fire pit is not being used. Yes the key is a shut off valve but you can never be too safe around propane. I am now subscribing.

    Hi, I really like the way you show the making of various objects. It's short, clear and precise, thank you. I think I'm going to do this project by adding a BBQ pan for my balcony where I currently live, this would be ideal for this place. Obviously I will adapt it in size, because I cannot make it as big. I will only have to change the tray for either cooking or relaxing fire. I was just looking to make my cheap BBQ by myself so the solution is perfect with that little extra in the hearth. And I will add rollers under the box so that it is easy to place it where I want.

    think i'll be trying this out during this Covid-19 downtime.
    Question... I didn't notice, but did you add some fresh air vents in the base in case a gas leak develops? This way any gas leak will not build up and spoil your day (boom) .

      @@nicolepiccini1370 Propane is heavier than air, so if there its a leak, it can sort of gather if not well ventilated. If that happens and it comes into contact with a flame/spark, which is not improbable with a fire pit, you can imagine what would happen.
