  • Dave Pantano, owner of Premier Martial Arts in Huntingdon Valley, PA and 7th degree black belt in American Kenpo Karate and black belt in Krav Maga, reacts to various scenes from Cobra Kai, Season 4, including the hockey team fight, point fight between Daniel Laruso and Johnny Lawrence, and tournament fight between Robbie and Hawk. We discuss the fighting techniques being used, as well as broader lessons to be learned from each of the relationships between the characters.
    Dave Pantano has been teaching self defense and leadership skills to his students for over 25 years. At our school, your child's training becomes more than just self-defense and excellent fitness; it becomes character development, self-discipline, focus and concentration, respect, and perseverance.
    Our adult styles taught at Premier Martial Arts combine the highly effective self-defense arts of Krav Maga and Kickboxing - the same systems and methods as the Israeli Army uses for fitness, fighting, and self-defense - to ensure you'll be ready for any encounter.

      @@Houndguardian It's far better than the drug abuse, suicide and sex that is found in almost all High School dramas that's becoming vastly overplayed and over replicated in society. I'll take the over the top fantasy action over Eurphoria BS. But that may just be me, that over the top action also allows for quite a lot of character development in Cobra Kai. If you pay attention to the characters and even the show writing, it is growing and correcting itself.

    I think Robby taking off the top part of the Gi was sort of breaking with Kreese and Silver.
    He wasn't fighting for either of them or Cobra Kai. He was fighting for himself.
    And I think it was the same reaction with Eli.
    In the end, it wasn't Kobrai Kai vs Miyagi anymore, but just 2 awesome competitors fighting each other.

    What people always forget, and this show did so well is, showcase that Miyagi taught Daniel defensive style of Karate when he began because he needed to defend himself against his bullies. Also, Miyagi knew Daniel is a hot head with a temper, so he left the aggressive lessons out. Just another example of how good a teacher he was.

    I enjoy these breakdown videos!! It’s awesome to hear a legit Martial Arts master giving the nitty gritty on reality vs fiction. Cobra Kai is a great show. But, it is just a show! I started training in Martial Arts as a nine year old kid who was a Chuck Norris fan. Over the years, in school and in the real world, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from experience what works for me and what doesn’t.
    I’ve learned that grappling, though very effective one on one, is the LAST place I want to be in a fight. Dirty fighting, weapons, the numbers game and real world terrain such as pavement, gravel and weather conditions makes grappling a weak form of self defense. High kicks, spin kicks such are great in sports and the movies. But not great choices in self defense. Punches aren’t ideal due to the potential of hitting hard surfaces, be it a head or a hip! Either could break the hand or sprain the wrist. Not to mention, cutting the knuckles on teeth!
    That said, open hand strikes are best. Disrupting balance to take an assailant down, then applying kicks or stomps are effective. Always being aware of surroundings and getting away ASAP is a sound strategy.

    My son has ADHD and he had a lot of trouble focusing and he'd get picked on as school because of his ADHD. We enrolled him in a Tang Soo Do class after talking to the instructor who spent some time talking to our son after the class and he treated our son like he was a normal kid. He recognized that having ADHD would be a bit of a struggle, but he also assured us that he knew how he could help our son get the most out of the class. Our son loved taking the classes and as time went on he learned how to focus better how to control the impulse to become distracted. His grades got better and he became an A student in school and eventually got to Red Belt with stripe before we had to move to another state. He wants to eventually return to classes and get his Black Belt someday.
    He's about to graduate college as a Specal Education Teacher because he wants to help other ADHD kids and those with learning disabilities learn how to become the best versions of themselves, just like the teachers in his life who took an interest in helping him become his best version.

    I havr always felt martial arts is fluid, changing, and evolving through the ages.
    I started with Kyokushin karate, and still train some of it. But have added Aikido, BJJ, and Kali to my training. I primarily now do Kali because I feel it is overall encompasses weapons, stand up, and ground. With weapons use at all possible situations.
    I agree that Johnny and Danial need to bury the hatchet and combine BOTH systems to create the greatest. Johnny’s street knowledge with Danial’s tradition would be a powerful art.
    The late Ed Parker said it best. “Evolve his style to stay relevant in modern times”.

    Great video! Love your channel. Was wondering if you agree with what I’m about to say cause it’s a conversation/debate I’ve had with a lot of people. I believe that TKD and Karate are technically kickboxing, here’s why and let me know if you agree. Kickboxing is an umbrella term defined as any combat sport in which you can punch/kick your opponent, it is contested on the feet, and it is not submission based. Karate/TKD check all of those boxes. Therefore not only Karate and TKD are kickboxing (forms of kickboxing) but so are Muay Thai, Savate, American, Dutch, Sanda...etc. whether it is semi or full contact does not change the fact it’s kickboxing. Thanks🙏🏻

      That's the interesting thing with this series. In the movies Daniel was the main character so everything was from his perspective but the series is much more thru Johnny where you get to see his side of the events and you get things filled in that the movies didn't show. It just shows how everyone always thinks of themselves as the hero and not the bad guy.

    I enjoy the show really do, and I am also a black belt, and I have never spoken to or met any sensei or black belt or real karate student that watched cobra Kai and has said “wow that kid is good”, or doesn’t look at or watch Ralph Macchio in complete embarrassment and cringe worthy every time he throws a kick, a punch or a block. Watching Ms .Robinson was almost as bad as watching Ralph Macchio. Or trying to believe, that these students became black belts within 1-2 years . Sorry NEVER EVER COULD HAPPEN

    Thanks for a good analysis, especially about the fight choreographies and about what is real or could be, and what is only a tv series. Can you analyze Sam and Tory’s fight? What (karate move) was Sam Larusso trying to do right before she got hit by Tory’s elbow?

    • @CounterstrikeDavePMA
      @CounterstrikeDavePMA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thank you so much for watching. As far as whether that is a good style it all depends on the individual I train in it along with American Kenpo some people like it some people hate it lol it’s all up to the individual and what you want

    Thank you for the Reality check with real fighting and in a tournament. I read comments all the time and too many kids think this is real. It's so much fun to watch but let's face it. How many times have you seen Dim Mock work in any situation? I read in the comments a number of times that Daniel will teach Sam the pressure points so she would win in the Tournament. Right, because it would make her win...🙄

    Hi Sensei David, what do you think about all being black belts just for the tournament?
    I found that particular detail a bit funny to be honest. They all talk about style and tradition but maaan, the black belt itself has a meaning.
    I know this is a show…but still, they should have been a bit less careless about the belt grades.

    • @CounterstrikeDavePMA
      @CounterstrikeDavePMA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s why it’s a movie and TV show. Everybody’s a white belt all at once In the dojo and then suddenly everybody’s a black out for the tournament. I don’t think it would be as exciting if they were a bunch of white belts and orange belts at the tournament so everybody Has to be a black belt LOL
      That’s why it’s entertainment and that’s why it’s awesome
