A black is nothing more than a belt, a piece of cloth. Your ultimate goal should not be to get your black belt. Your ultimate goal should be to a black belt. Being a black belt is a state of mind, a way of life. ~Bohdi Sanders

What makes the show great is that it IS deep. Especially for people that HAVE spent a good chunk of their lives doing martial arts. It shows just how martial arts changes people and how its lessons are life lessons.

No If I'm a witness I'll ask if there's a problem and suggest I can call the police. I don't do martial arts or fight anybody. If they keep terrorizing him, just call police. This show is great, but some stuff is completely illegal. And way too unrealistic.

If you are not gonna punch them in the feet don't kick them in the face. I'm sorry sir, what? 😂 Kicking someone in the face (if you can do it) is a lot more effective than punching them in the feet. Now i know it's just a saying but it's saying not to use kicks. Why? Not a lot of people use them so most of the time they can't defend or block it cause they don't expect them.

We opened back in 1997 and we joined them when it was just a licensing group and we got a lot of business training and very good martial arts training from some high-quality people. There are some very committed and Old School martial arts in our organization however, once we got bought things changed, and a lot of us have broken away on some level, including myself principles matter.

As a first degree black belt in taekwondo and on my way to earning a first degree black belt in shidokan. I don't like the idea that Johnny didn't train for almost 30 years and still could do all these techniques. The human body doesn't work like that. I get up every morning I practice all my basic kicks and footwork. Even if it is only between 5 and 10 minutes a day. You need to keep practicing.

I havr always felt martial arts is fluid, changing, and evolving through the ages. I started with Kyokushin karate, and still train some of it. But have added Aikido, BJJ, and Kali to my training. I primarily now do Kali because I feel it is overall encompasses weapons, stand up, and ground. With weapons use at all possible situations. I agree that Johnny and Danial need to bury the hatchet and combine BOTH systems to create the greatest. Johnny’s street knowledge with Danial’s tradition would be a powerful art. The late Ed Parker said it best. “Evolve his style to stay relevant in modern times”.

I enjoy these breakdown videos!! It’s awesome to hear a legit Martial Arts master giving the nitty gritty on reality vs fiction. Cobra Kai is a great show. But, it is just a show! I started training in Martial Arts as a nine year old kid who was a Chuck Norris fan. Over the years, in school and in the real world, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from experience what works for me and what doesn’t. I’ve learned that grappling, though very effective one on one, is the LAST place I want to be in a fight. Dirty fighting, weapons, the numbers game and real world terrain such as pavement, gravel and weather conditions makes grappling a weak form of self defense. High kicks, spin kicks such are great in sports and the movies. But not great choices in self defense. Punches aren’t ideal due to the potential of hitting hard surfaces, be it a head or a hip! Either could break the hand or sprain the wrist. Not to mention, cutting the knuckles on teeth! That said, open hand strikes are best. Disrupting balance to take an assailant down, then applying kicks or stomps are effective. Always being aware of surroundings and getting away ASAP is a sound strategy.

My son has ADHD and he had a lot of trouble focusing and he'd get picked on as school because of his ADHD. We enrolled him in a Tang Soo Do class after talking to the instructor who spent some time talking to our son after the class and he treated our son like he was a normal kid. He recognized that having ADHD would be a bit of a struggle, but he also assured us that he knew how he could help our son get the most out of the class. Our son loved taking the classes and as time went on he learned how to focus better how to control the impulse to become distracted. His grades got better and he became an A student in school and eventually got to Red Belt with stripe before we had to move to another state. He wants to eventually return to classes and get his Black Belt someday. He's about to graduate college as a Specal Education Teacher because he wants to help other ADHD kids and those with learning disabilities learn how to become the best versions of themselves, just like the teachers in his life who took an interest in helping him become his best version.

What people always forget, and this show did so well is, showcase that Miyagi taught Daniel defensive style of Karate when he began because he needed to defend himself against his bullies. Also, Miyagi knew Daniel is a hot head with a temper, so he left the aggressive lessons out. Just another example of how good a teacher he was.

I lived in-between the "bullying era" at high school (but i went through it in middle school). Bullying wasn't heard of at my place, there were no rules if it happened like there are now. Old friend, couldn't tell you why, poured chocolate milk on me. swung at him, then fight, friends (thanks connell and james) pulled us apart. no intervention, school or police. this was over 15 years ago though, i think they'd have more response time.
