I've heard it said that Ronnie Van Zant was the type of guy who'd give you the shirt off his back, & it didn't matter what color you were. The timing of this reaction is awesome because the song was a response to a Neil Young song called “Southern Man” which Ronnie took as an insult to all southerners. So in essence a response to a diss 🤭 Ronnie called him out in the lyrics “I hope Neil Young will remember a southern man don’t need him around anyhow” Ironically Ronnie(who wrote the lyrics and sang the song) is from Jacksonville FL not Alabama. All my family is still in Alabama and I probably will retire there one day. Thanks for doing this one BP! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Great song but the Governor was not true, ( he was on the wrong side morally) And Nixon was corrupt! And Neil Young was morally on the right side! Love the song because people ignore all that and just rock out
Pretty sure it was the song Alabama he was referring to. Also was wearing Neil Young tee shirt. They were first signed to a deal by Jimmy Johnson at muscle shoals studios in 70 or 71.
@@andreaschadeck5596 Just a rumor based on the fact that he was wearing a Neil Young "Tonight's the Night" shirt on the cover of their final record. Ronnie was a fan of Neil's music and resented the dark image of his home state in the song 'Alabama' but remained fond of Neil's music and Young was a fan of Skynyrd, as well.
People were more tolerant then. We had our issues, but people didn't have to hide who they were to please others. Skyward was another great group of that era.
...because the recent trend of calling it the Confederate Flag is outright wrong. The Confederacy had several flags during its existence, but this was never one of them.
My first reply was deleted, but I pointed out that that flag NEVER was the flag of the CSA. That design was proposed for the CSA, but it was rejected and instead the "Stars and Bars" was adopted. The closest it ever came, was a similar flag used by the Army of Northern Virginia, however that one was square where the Rebel Flag is rectangular.

Sang this song with the house band in the Firehouse bar in Bangkok at my Bucks Party 15 years ago. Its a great party song! Picture an Aussie singer, 3 Thai and 2 Philippino band members and a party with 2 Americans, 3 Africans, 4 Chinese, 3 Aussies, 2 New Zealanders and 1 Frenchman all singing this song. It was a global hit... Hell yeh...
The only thing I think of when I see the rebal flag is the Dukes of Hazzard. I love this song. One of the best bands ever. Thank you for the video. Take care of your beautiful family. Love y’all and keep safe.
I’m Australian and that’s what it has always meant to me. Our mum loved that show, she loved the car chases and drove like that herself 😂 She’s 87 now and has fortunately slowed down.
Merry Clayton was one of the backing vocalists on the original recording of Sweet Home Alabama. Same amazing singer as on the Stones Gimme Shelter. I am not a Lynyrd Skynyrd expert, by far, but learned that from a documentary called 20 Feet from Stardom which features her, Lisa Fischer and so many other background singers. Just one of those things I now know - haha.
I read an article about Merry Clayton and Gimme Shelter. The Stones woke her up in the middle of the night to record it. When she sings r@pe murder 3 times her voice cracked. She thought she messed up but if you listen closely you can hear Mick and Kieth whooping it up. They loved it and kept it in the song.
Saw them in concert years ago. They put on a good show. Also, one of the cousin's owned a sort of dive bar. juke joint, restaurant in Homosassa FL that had entertainment. Band members would just show up & jam with their cousin. It was a GOOD time! great food too!
Wiki.... Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at Oakland Coliseum Stadium in Oakland, California on July 2, 1977 as part of their Day on the Green tour. The band's setlist included: "Sweet Home Alabama and "Free Bird" The band members who performed that night Ronnie Van Zant: Vocals Allen Collins: Guitar Gary Rossington: Guitar Steve Gaines: Guitar Artimus Pyle: Drums Leon Wilkeson: Bass Billy Powell: Piano Cassie Gaines: Backing vocals Jo Billingsley: Backing vocals Leslie Hawkins: Backing vocals The band's performance of "Freebird" at this show is considered by many fans to be one of the most epic closing songs in rock history. The band's performance at Oakland Coliseum Stadium was recorded live and is available to watch on TH-cam. The band's plane crashed three days later, killing three members of the band and several others. The band reformed in 1987 with Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother.
Also, I read Framton wouldn’t allow Freebird to be played on the second day of the concert because it took away from his performance which followed Skynyd’s.
Would you have ever thought Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of your favorite bands? Imagine back in the day when this music first came out. You would have fit right in!!! Their catalog is huge for the short time they were together. In mid-20's when the plane wreck occurred. The guitarist Steve Gaines on left side of stage in red pants was one of the members killed in the plane wreck as well as lead vocalist and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, , back-up vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister) as well as others connected to the band. Here's a few classics of many more; "Tuesdays Gone" - Right up there with Free Bird, others you've heard already "The Ballad of Curtis Loew", a great little story.
Freebird was the next song. Ronnie , Steve Gaines in the red pants, and his sister Cassie Gaines, who was the woman in the middle. They were the 3 who died in October that year. The girl on the left is Leslie Hawkins. Her and the drummer, who is Artimus Pyle, are the only 2 living that were on the stage that day. Skynyrd is always 🔥 Thanks for the reaction.
That was the legendary Day On The Green from July, 2, 1977, when they played with the Outlaws, Santana and Peter Frampton. My brother and me were there, and it was a glorious (and HOT) day in Oakland that day. Sadly, Ronnie, Steve Gaines (the guitarist in white), and one of the backup singers, his sister Cassie Gaines, were the 3 killed in the plane crash less than 3 months later. RIP.
That guitar player in front of the 3 ladies singing backup was named Steve Gaines. He and his sister Cassie (back up singer) joined the band about a month before the plane crash-they both died in the crash.
Cassie and Steve were actually part of the band for well over a year before they were killed in the plane crash. Cassie was part of the band first and kept telling Ronnie about her brother and finally he was auditioned and the rest is history.
Another band to check out would be The Rossington Collins Band. It's comprised of the surviving members. Don't Misunderstand Me is a really good song. There are also plenty of southern rock groups to discover. I don't know whether you should start with Blackfoots Train Train or Molly Hatchets Flirting with Disaster
At the end of the video, the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd acknowledged and thanked Peter Frampton and Bill Graham. Peter Frampton also performed that day and you should definitely check his music out. In particular his live performances. And Bill Graham was the promoter of that concert that's why he was being thanked.
I’m guessing this could be from Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum. I didn’t go that year but a couple of years later. These concerts were epic. Summertime, many great bands, sitting on the grass in the outfield. Pure joy!
Born and raised in Ga. Never went out of the south til I got married at 20. Spent many wonderful years in the south between Ga and Ala ( the Chattahoochee river bridges my hometown of Columbus Ga and Phenix City Ala. Wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in this world.
Being born & raised in Alabama, with family all over the world, you can’t find any sweeter, more accepting people than in Alabama. I was a teenager in the 70’s and we all did just get along! It was just a fun, carefree time! Roll Tide 😜
There are many stories just about this song alone, but one of my favorites was that a group of young musicians (Lynyrd Skynyrd) went to Muscle Shoals and wanted to record for free. And of course the studio told them no they wouldn't record them for free. A few months later the band called up and asked if they could use the studios name in their new song, and not thinking anything of it they said sure go ahead. Several months later the song comes out and shoots up the charts making the band stars. And just to give my 2 cents, that flag just means Southern Pride!
The third verse mentions the Swampers. They are a group of studio musicians in the town of Muscle Shoals, AL that played on many many songs in the 60s and 70s including a few you have already reacted to. They played on a lot of Bob Seger's songs as well as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Etta James, Cher, and Linda Ronstadt, just to name a few.
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. On another note, can I request Devin Townsend, Deadhead - live at The Royal Albert Hall. U haven't really seen him together with a band in front of an audience. 🤘💪🏼
Just 30 mins from my home!. The Oakland Alameda County Coliseum! Home to many a concert back in the day! In 1977, this is probably one of the annual, "Day On The Green" summer concert series, I'm sure.. 60,000 screaming fans packed the stadium most every time, which it appears to be here! Rock promoter icon, Bill Graham promoted these annual concerts and was sadly killed in a helicopter crash just a couple miles from my home back in 1991.. Strange that a few members of the band had also died in a plane crash later on as well.
Every time I see the lady back up singers I am reminded that one of them died in the plane crash along with Ronnie and Steve. She was Steve's sister. Others had major injuries and of course the pilots were also killed. So sad it was just a couple of months after this concert.
You have to look up the Neil Young thing, I read Ronnie was buried in a Neil Young tshirt. And then the plane crash….Artemis survives the crash, and with injuries, walks to find help. Gets to a farm and the farmer shoots him thinking he’s a threat! Crazy legends of Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynard Skynryd was named for a gym teacher at the high school they went to, who hated rock & roll. They are actually from Jacksonville, FL. My husband attended the same school they went to. That teacher had retired by the time he got there.
Speaking of old collectables, I have many Vinyl records, from 33's, 45's and 78's. Some I bought as a kid, others handed down from my dad, I even have old Victrola records from my grandmother. I had a chance as a teenager to play the Victrola records on her Victrola player in the late 70's.
Those 3 were "The Honkettes" and were backup vocalists. One of the Cassie Gaines ended up bringing Steve Gaines (the guy that does the solo with the red pants) into Lynyrd Skynyrd (she was already part of the band). She also passed away with her brother in the plane crash so imagine the pain for that family :S

Born and raised in Mobile, AL 64 years ago and I agree. Why can't we all get along? Love is a beautiful thing, and music is the one thing that brings us all together. Still live in my beautiful port city on Mobile Bay!
Alabama is home.
Hell yeh...
My mom lives steps away from where they used to record in Jacksonville, FL. Great band!
The Females backup singers were called THE HONKETTES
All are deceased now,Rest in Peace ladies,Cassie,JoJo and Leslie
Leslie Hawkins is still alive. She's on the left.@@elizabethfranco1284
@@elizabethfranco1284 Leslie Hawkins is still alive.
I loved learning about your love of Americana. It shows a sign of you that is unexpected! 😊
The band's setlist included: "Sweet Home Alabama and "Free Bird" The band members who performed that night
Ronnie Van Zant: Vocals
Allen Collins: Guitar
Gary Rossington: Guitar
Steve Gaines: Guitar
Artimus Pyle: Drums
Leon Wilkeson: Bass
Billy Powell: Piano
Cassie Gaines: Backing vocals
Jo Billingsley: Backing vocals
Leslie Hawkins: Backing vocals
The band's performance of "Freebird" at this show is considered by many fans to be one of the most epic closing songs in rock history.
The band's performance at Oakland Coliseum Stadium was recorded live and is available to watch on TH-cam.
The band's plane crashed three days later, killing three members of the band and several others. The band reformed in 1987 with Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother.
I think you mean the plane crashed “3 months” later not 3 days.
Also, I read Framton wouldn’t allow Freebird to be played on the second day of the concert because it took away from his performance which followed Skynyd’s.
1977 I was 16 and lived in Livermore California at the time which is about 30 minutes from Oakland and I was at that concert and it was epic!
Here's a few classics of many more;
"Tuesdays Gone" - Right up there with Free Bird, others you've heard already
"The Ballad of Curtis Loew", a great little story.
Skynyrd is always 🔥
Thanks for the reaction.
I was just coming here to say that I'm glad you jumped on it
Cassie and Steve were actually part of the band for well over a year before they were killed in the plane crash. Cassie was part of the band first and kept telling Ronnie about her brother and finally he was auditioned and the rest is history.
@@smb60usa that’s correct-I remember that Cassie was in the band first, then Steve joined. Thanks for clearing it up!😺
Another band to check out would be The Rossington Collins Band.
My husband and I got to see the in concert in Valdosta, GA at Wild Adventures Amusement Park around 2001.
Check out the swampers, you would be surprised how many people the played backup music for including RNB...one of them was Duane Allman
Good music is good music. Just spread the love not hate people. 💗🙏💗 Thank you for your reactions..love watching you. Keep it coming!!
When you think about it, when you know what happened to this band, the line "Lord, I'm coming home to you" means something WAY different.
One of my favorite movies!!
Legendary song and like always another great reaction!
One of my all time favorites!
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. On another note, can I request Devin Townsend, Deadhead - live at The Royal Albert Hall. U haven't really seen him together with a band in front of an audience. 🤘💪🏼
Ronnie and these guys had so much talent! So sad it ended way too soon!
Legends that will be forever missed!
Incredible guitar work
Every time I see the lady back up singers I am reminded that one of them died in the plane crash along with Ronnie and Steve.
Apparently might only be legend and not true. 😬
i know in the 70s n 80s no one had any idea the rebel flag was racist.we all thought it was nascar, southern rock, dukes of hazard, just meant southern things.still think people are taking it to far.people werent flying em because they were racists.
It’s not racist now….made up shit by the democrats and the media.
Yeah, Let's keep Truckin' together! The girls are the Honkettes, Leslie Hawkins, Cassie Gaines, and Jo-Jo Billingsley.
Thank you for the memories of my youth ! They were great!
They played at Mile High stadium June of 77. Got bad sunburn but they were great.
Rebuttal to Neil Young’s “Southern Man”. Notice Ronnie is wearing a Neil Young tshirt. He was also a fan.
The opening riff was written by the latte great Ed King, also a former member of Strawberry Alarmclock.
Ronnie VanZant was a perfectionist! He requred that all songs were played as close to what fans heard on the radio.
There's a great Pawn Stars segment where someone walked in with one of Ronnie Van Zant's hats.
you can see a bunch of them hollering Freebird at the end. cool as hell
❤ great reaction love this
Sweet Home Alabama… Roll Tide Roll!! Please react to The Ballad of Curtis Lowe! My fav! ❤
California was beautiful....
Lived on Alameda Island in mid 70's. Loved California. So sad it's not what it used to be.
@@cattewest No place is what it used to be.
btw at that 1.6 million people concert in Russia AC/DC was the headliner
I went to a bunch of these Days on the Green! I could have been there. Days were bleary so I can’t be sure😂. I do remember CSN&Y though.
Such great music!
This was recorded at a Day On the Green in the Oakland Coliseum. Great video and a great song.
I saw the clip and immediately thought Freebird from this concert
The Budweiser can was jus there cos the pianist was drinking, not even product placement, jus what they bring w/ them or available at the venue maybe? I dunno, I'm thinking out loud. Great reaction P! 40!
Kid Rock has a song called All Summer Long that has several samples from this song and he adds his spin for his own summer anthem. Not close to this song, but you can see how skynrd is one of his core influences and southern rock in general.
You MUST watch the documentary Muscle Shoals
You need to react to Hardy Sold Out,and the Mockingbird and the Crow, Rockstar, quit,Waiting In The Truck, A Rock
It’s not music that brings people together, it’s the message and meaning shared
