    might be worth mentioning the new elevation cover mechanic. if the enemy unit has the elevation advantage then your units get negative cover.

      This mechanic is so annoying it’s difficult to tell about the elevation changes and then the fucking tanks just end up missing every single shot

      I don't think they get negative cover, they just don't get any cover bonus. Don't quote me on that though

      @@temrenalican4570 oh, no, they DEFINITELY receive negative modifiers. In multiplayer the damage received is a worse penalty than crossing open roads in coh1 (which used to be a common penalty, now not many map makers enforce such a rule.) In the twin beaches 1v1 map the top fuel to northeast manpower and the southwest base's bottom manpower point are devastating gradients.

      @@rustyshackleford1011 i like it once you're fairly certain when it'll kick in, but yeah, the lack of readability with some kind of tooltip/ layer is a big miss. It's ironic cause the line of sight tracer activated when trying to target a unit around obstructions is AMAZING for CoH, but they didn't have a detailed option/ use some kind of visual effect that would indicate the vertical firing angle and how close you are approaching to triggering the effect.
      One thing i do like, but it is a little jarring cause of the flickering binary nature of the cover display, is seeing that a unit is in danger when susceptible to elevation, whereas if you are being flanked you never really know for sure until you've lost two models quickly.
      A radial cover ring around the squad....maybe even models, would've been a cool feature to bring into the new installment, considering it has been a series staple, but its readability/ depth has never really improved upon aside from this new elevation kicker.

    Adapt and overcome! A lot of these changes (excluding the bugs) are more intuitive. Some of these COH2 mechanics that we were all familiar with were only able to be really understood with outside resources (like your TH-cam videos)...so probably better for the common player overall.

    Great video Tightrope! Up for your video on control groups too! I used to have each individual unit on a number and then group selection with shift + numbers, can't do that anymore (or maybe I can, but I had to debind shift + number from other controls)

    Not sure if anybody else has mentioned it, but if you hold control and right click on a transport, pios or engineers will board instead of repairing

    7:07 if you hold ctrl or alt you get the "get in prompt" so you can still queue up orders like mentioned

    Good show on the doors in buildings, this whole time I thought some buildings were bugged since Squads wouldn't exit the door I told them to exit. This makes so much sense! Lol, they should probably just make it like the older games as the buildings will have the same issue that barbed wiring a door has in CoH 2. It works for one door but when all the doors are blocked off, suddenly they all work again.
    For CoH 3 rather than have doors getting blocked off by damage only to let you out when every door is damaged, they should just remove the mechanic and leave it at wire.

      Yeah I think they need to change how the doors work. Yesterday I had a unit retreat from a building, they jumped out the side of the wall, got stuck between the building and an object and died.

    ALso i love the way they handeled elevation in this game.
    You can actually see if your tank infantyr or AT is obstructed by hight or not!

    6:50 I think you can hold left ctrl or left alt and it’ll switch between repair and board iirc

    In coh3, you can't click thru the notifications on the left, it messes with your micro quite a bit. However, you can click thru the victory point bar at the top of you screen unlike in coh2. It ends up being worse in coh3 still. Also, playing with the classic keys in coh2, let's say your combined force of infantry plus a tank just discovered a sturm tiger, you do a box selection, press T to retreat the infantry then R and left click on the ground behind to reverse your tank. You could react really quickly and with very few commands be out of the way. In coh3, you cant retreat a bunch of infantry if it's selected with a tank since it has to be the same key for retreat and reverse and reverse has priority. It is absolutely terrible and I hate it.

      @@oc5058 It's the ones I use instead of grid hotkeys, so I can't speak for the latter. I was raised with A to attack and S to stop with all my RTS so I didn't want to switch over for only one game. There is less overlap in general with classic hotkeys and when there is, like T to retreat infantry and T to exit an american vehicule, the retreat has priority.

    So far I've been unable to crew a team weapon and shift queue retreat. After crewing the weapon, the remainder of the squad just stays put. Not sure if any other shift commands after a re-crew work, but it might be worth looking into.

    Do you know if using attack ground to hit vehicles in smoke still works in 3? I’ve tried a few times but it’s yet to work for me.

    Something to add is that if tanks run over props in the environment some where near you in the fog you can still see the props get destroyed. it helped me the other day to anticipate a panzer IV flanking me.

    Green cover is even stronger now and thank god they changed suppression to squad level so often one guy wouldn't get in cover and that squad had to retreat, now they can return fine and even with if only they are behind green cover

    idk if this was the same in COH2 but the lack of zoom out + the rotate camera keybind behind hard locked to ctrl+alt with the wasd preset is a hard killer for me.
    I saw a mod for zooming out, waiting for one to unlock keybinds and then I'll give COH3 another try.

    Not to be 'that guy' but outside of the improvement of Shift commands and squad supression and some which would more or less fall under bug fixes like vehicule phazing and mortar quick tap, I really feel like most of the changes aren't great.
    Mainly those related to damage like the retreat resistance and being unable to damage an enemy inf with their own satchel. Punishing a poor retreat to get wipes was a very important part of CoH2 and the risk was worth the reward bc the only thing that protected the squad was evasion which could be negated if you had your units or vehicule stay close to the squad (or if you used fire or explosives). With the damage reduction, mines, grenades and even chasing the squad feel like wasting ressources for a mitigated return rather than a high risk high reward move.

    I expect things like tanks being able to crush infantry units will be patched in the coming weeks and months.
    Usually the first 6 months or so many adjustments to game play and balance are fairly common on newer games.
    The one thing they did not address that I was hoping to see was being able to zoom further out to encompass a wider real time view of the entire battlefield.
    I still keep my fingers crossed for this to be addressed in the future but it is doubtful since it did not happen with the games release.
    Good video as these are where I think the devs pick up a lot of issues that need to be sorted and fixed.

      I think that's something entirely game-changing. Being able to zoom out, pretty much in any rts, would limit apms for competitive gaming. Just the fact that it would put a lot of players with low apms on par with professionals is why I think they'll never allow it. Those guys would not get over it and many of them would stop playing :-). Can hope though, I dislike high apms.

    I noticed something weird with the map and enemy garrisoned units. If an enemy was in a building and then your unit lost sight of it, the building would remain marked on the minimap. It's not accurate to the position I found out, so not an unfair advantage, I think.

      Sometimes AT guns or MGs hits you without getting spotted through the fog of war, so you can't tell where they firing from...not sure but seems like a bug to me...

    God damn, so many QoL changes. One thing I wonder htough is I see HMGs got a QoL for buildings but what about out in the open? Can you 'lock' your hmg so prevent it from picking up and moving on accident when you order them to fire at a specific unit (Say, to spread out suppression or damage like in coh)

    ty very much for this breakdown. love most of this. some of this needs patched. my main issue so far has been vehicle pathfinding. I remember having similar issues in coh2 but I haven't played it in 3-4 years.

      working in software I can see how some things like the building facing thing would be a lower end priority than the bigger problems they were addressing from those public sessions

    I've noticed when you try and select more than one control grouped unit while holding shift and pressing the numbers, instead of giving you control of the different units too it just binds the control group number to the unit you have selected first. Really annoying when trying to micro vehicles. Hope they fix it soon

    i'll definitely miss the 80hp standard health per model (except for snipers) thing, it made many of the in game stats more easily digestible. hopefully we'll get official relic stats at some point instead of datamined ones and presented somewhere in game to make up for it, since in that regard the game is looking more complex

    I dont mind the AT squad changes, IRL a vehicle would not want to charge forward towards a AT team to crush them as the AT weapons will be more effective the closer it is. But I think satchels not doing FF is stupid.

      That has been fixed. A single group is planted with each click instead of an accordion of them.

    The satchel charge no longer deals friendly fire?! That makes no sensem.. hopefully that's an oversight and will be fixed.. (or at least make it directional to the location of the satchel..

    Might be worth to mention that base building has changed. For example in coh2 you could left click in a red are were you couldn't build then you could turn the building in the desired direction and then place it in a not red area. Sadly they removed that.

      they fixed the initial rotation of the buildings, so they dont start diagonal now, but yeah its still annoying. still baffles me that many features from coh2 were left out, resulting in needlessly worse performance in certain areas

      You can argue that both CoH2+3 are more casual/arcade than eg Starcraft 2, but I dont see how CoH3 is more arcade? If anything its more realistic and sensible.

    One nice thing I noticed is that with all the attack-ground-able units I’ve seen it’s now possible to give an AG command outside of their firing range, causing them to reposition so that they are in range. A cool change imo, although it’s seems like it’s going to make mortars a lot easier to use; for better or worse I’m not sure

      Mortar auto fire is terrible in this game, like half the ROF of the barrage and -20 range. I don't think it is a big issue currently.

      @@tightropegaming that explains it. I'm a little mixed on mortars atm. My gut reaction to them now is they do more consistent health damage instead of betting on a slim chance of wiping several models in cover by setting and forgetting. The quiet impact register in the audio doesn't help their perception either, though.

    I’ve lost a lot of 1v1s due to the new retreat bonus. Infantry no longer feel nigh invincible after you hit R. I dunno if I like it or not yet.

    Its been years since I've played CoH, last night I installed CoH3, and of course I don't remember a single hotkey. (1) I was hoping I could hand something in front of me durn my learning curve. Has anyone ever done an Excel sheet with CoH hotkeys? I searched the net and so far came up with nothing. (2) Have the commands changed any from CoH2 to 3?

      I always look for hotkeys there in ANY game ;-)

    Hey tightrope! tested COH3 and didn't seem to notice anything until now. It seems that unit priority is a bit wacky as in coh2 when you focus fired an enemy and moved your units would continue to target that unit to my knowledge. This is not the case in COH3 where some may attack the closest units while others are the ones actually shooting at them. These may be fixed but not sure. One I really hope is just a bug in the vehicle facing order currently will make your tank reverse unto the order if it is behind them. This does not sound bad until you have an enemy tank on your flank and instead of standing still and turning it reverses, and in some cases shows, its weak armor to the enemy.

      In my experience you need to wait for the unit to actually shot at the enemy before giving a new command for it to stick. Really annoying when you want to chase a unit.

    Great video! It actually made me consider to buy COH 3 (being a huge multiplayer coh2 fan). I didn't buy COH3 yet because I didn't see how it brought new things to the franchise (apart from, bringing back some old things from coh1). But bringing back old ideas from the first chapter isn't what I expect in the third chapter that is released 10 years after COH2 and 17 years after the release of COH1. COH3 looks visually too much like the old engine and to me it looked like coh3 was just another reskin expansion and maybe a cash grab. But this shows some promising details that maybe patches will fix. However, I would almost bet that their marketing strategy is to sell skin packs to make the game look more awesome, because those skins are pretty dull.

      Oh, but the old engines had character and looked way better than this 90s ps1 game! Sarcasm aside, I agree. The faction roles are also kind of lined up the same way from tales of valor, swiss knife u.s., emplacements/indirect u.k., bunkering until tanks wehrmacht, light vehicle panzer elite (err dak).
      I've only been playing u.s., but the tech paths are really neat and take cool abilities from coh2. The added obligatory ability/passive for each vet1 level is a great additiom, too. (Freaking white phosphorous bazooka for u.s.?!)
      As far as post launch sales go you're likely right with skins, but they will also likely repeat coh2's commanders mistake with the reworked "battlegroups". There's no bulletin/accolades/achievements like there were in coh2, which while the perpetually locked in miniscule bonuses before even seeing the game were annoying, they added recorded goals(until half of them broke in coh2 :( ).
      It may be controversial now, but I think GOOD map packs are the only fair way to get more money. Exclusive commanders in a faction felt more p2w bait than the buy in factions. Skins just have to de facto be overpriced it seems and excluded from gameplay reward pools. Maps may "divide" a player base but it feels like the most honest transaction between player/dev and that's what should be getting paid the big bucks for.
      If designers are only indirectly being rewarded through other patrons goodwill of buying skins they dont even really want, there isn't exactly the same drive to create, test, and polish that "must have" game content. Cosmetics you can't really critique and punish, cause at the end of the day those always target niche payers.

    Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like they added a whole whack load of detail and cool features but will have to patch some minor bugs and annoyances? As a nooby COH2 player (20 hours or so) I love the thought of tactical pause because I just can't be bothered to sweat my balls off clicking 10 times a second. Your video really makes me want to try this game out. It looks more positive than negative overall.

    This is exactly what i wanted! So many mini changes between the games. Cool how you can now retreat a squad by selecting building.
    Edit: Actually, there have been a few too many "i hope this will be patched" comments for this 60 euro game.

    Have you noticed if your units are less diligent about calling out hazards? Back in the beta I just could NOT hear my guys call out enemy grenades or flamethrowers. I feel less informed by what's going on if my attention is elsewhere, whether or not my camera is on the unit I'm microing for a fight.
