- With the release of the DSi XL I figured this would be a good time to go back and look at my other Nintendo handhelds that I own and give a brief history of how I got started with the Game Boy's. Also, it's hard to notice but there are some very minor audio syncing issues in the video. I have the problem figured out and this will likely be the last video with this problem.
the gameboy sp was AMAZING
light, small, backlit, cool flip thing, and so many good games
Wow I'm amazed you did this vid all in one take! Nice job Pete. A couple items that you should keep an eye out for for your collection; a Game Boy Light (Japanese only GB with back lite capabilities), and also the Nintendo eReader for the original GB Advance. Very entertaining video as always, and have fun with the new XL. I'm probably going to wait until I find it used for cheaper.
oh...my...god...you have SO MANY GAMES. I would NEVER see the light of day if I had all of those. It's beautiful.
Hey Pete! Nice video! I remember buying the original Gameboy you have on the left! Had many a car rides playing that one lol, I had Killer Instinct, wow was that fun, even on that no color Gameboy :)
What a fun video! I too have collected all the Nintendo handelds (luckily still DO have my GameBoy Pocket), and my original DS was signed by Shigeru Miyamoto at E3 one year I Was lucky enough to go as a guest of a friend who worked at Konami. Ahh such great memories. Anyway thanks for the video and I gotta say, it makes me wanna hang out with you seriously I very much enjoyed hearing your stories for each system. I
sweet retrospective. just today picked up a nintendo dsi xl 25th Mario Anniversary Edition with a lot of games off of craigs list. i already have a 3ds but i wanted to have a dsi xl because of how big the screen is and the 25th anniversary version is a cool little collectors item.
@lemurfan123 such an amazing system. I still get warm feeling thinking about the day I bought mine and first turned it on.
Awesome video Pete. The light in the video was a little dark though. Awesome Channel. You're a pro
I had the SAME Gameboy Pocket! It was my first handheld also. The game I got with it was Pokemon Red.
i my favorite handheld game of all time was the "jet grind radio" for the gba, i remember as a kid saying "look mom, is like the one on the dreamcast"
Gameboy Pocket was my first handheld too, and a classmate accidently smashed in the screen by snapping this elastic cord I had on my backpack at the time. ): That incident also got me a free upgrade to a Gameboy Color. The pocket was a great system though, I miss that little thing!
Also, I literally went "Whoah!" when you showed the difference between DS screen sizes. I don't think I'll be getting one though.
Great video mate, you now have another sub! Really like your opinions and the detail you put into your videos. Keep it up brother!
Really love the game boys there were awesome systems, i had like 3 ds lites but now i really want a dsi because the xl looks too big for being taken out awesome vid Pete.
I'm liking the personal history. Nice video.
The only thing I like better about the original DS is the size. I find it fits my hands better than the thinner, more rectangular DS Lite.
I had a Super Game Boy. That thing seemed so awesome at the time.
Excellent video, I only own three portable Nintendo systems myself. I'll eventually get the rest of them somewhere in the near future.
Always enjoy your collection clips, sir. Keep 'em coming!
good stuff man reall like the DSI XL i am looking forward to getting one! and i am also pumped to see what nintendo is going to bring out next.
Thinking about upgrading my Lite to the DSiXL, because I really like the way the buttons sort of click instead of the mushy buttons on the lite. And, I need those bigger screens. I find it hard to invest myself in an epic adventure on a screen that small.
i like the way you've setup your display there.
Great story! The SP was my favorite because of it's portable attributes. I carried that thing everywhere when I was a kid and because it folded up like a small "brick," I never damaged it. I might have to look into grabbing another one because I believe that I saw Gamestop selling pre-owner SP's and games. I think that library collections are great, but I am more of a current gamer. Would I play the SP if I bought one? I don't know....
Very nice collection! I like how it all has a story behind it too:-)
oh my gosh.. i'd be so bitter about that GBP and Pokemon.. great video, Pete!
I still have the first game boy but my grey part around the screen came off. It still works though. I love your collection
When I have this open in another tab, it reads "A look back at my hand". Just thought I would share that with you. Great video by the way. I'm excited for the 3DS as well.
Great video, I havent been subscribing for that long of a time but I love your style :) The video is actually helpful to me because im looking at possibly upgrading my DS since I still have a day one launch system (the fat one) and I still love it, personally I like the size and weight of it versus the Lite (in fact I felt like I was going to snap it) but its getting a but old so Im looking at either an XL or a Lite and im not quite sure yet since the XL is all the money I have for the month.
I loved that story xD Even the schools are funding you to add to your collection!
I remember I got my GBA taken at lunch too, lol. I was also playing pokemon. Leaf green I believe. It was my first Nintendo handheld. I got it with Mario Kart Super Circuit. Good times, good times.
Great to see Nintendo still ruling the handheld side of the generations. The 3DS hopefully will kick it up a notch.
Wow. that story about the gameboy pocket reminds me of when I was in elementary school and a kid brought in a new game boy advance SP like right when it came out, and the playground monitor took it away from him and when she did she dropped it and broke the screen.
I still have the original DS, hotrod red. It's badass.
Loved the video.
Very nice. I love my Gameboy pocket. If a lunch lady asked me for mine back in the day, I would have just left school. haha
nice pete and i to loved the game boy Sp and when i was about 5 it came out and my adult cousin got me this modded cartridge that had about 100 full nes games which inspired me to keep playing my dads nes (nice vid)
11:31 Who had their 3DS with them whilst watching that part? Back when this video was made the 3DS was a complete mystery but now we know everything about it. TOOK LONG ENOUGH!! :)
I remember when i got a gameboy advance sp. I got it with smb3 and fell in love with it
I remember having the n64 transfer pak, and playing pokemon yellow gameboy game via pokemon stadium 64, on the television.
My first handheld was Game Gear. My first Nintendo handheld was classic Gameboy. I had a GBA, and own a GBA SP and DS lite, collecting Megaman games for both systems when I get them cheap. I keep the GBA SP because I only want to get some more classic gb games. I use a nerf armor thing for DS Lite, which makes it look comfortable lol.
3D capabilities? Didn't they try that with Virtual Boy?
nice video man and im looking forward to ur next and i think u should do a review for supermario bros on the dsi xl
I SO want a DSiXL, my meat hooks need the extra room and I'm totally into the bigger screen :-)
Of course if they bring out the new handheld soon it'll become pretty rare ;-)
Nice video!
Though, fun fact: Nintendo finished the Game Boy Advance around 1996, but after the resurgence of popularity in the original Game Boy with Pokemon's North American release, the Big N decided to simply add color to their original product and delay the release of the Advance a whole 5 years. Always found that fascinating.
But yes, I envy you for being able to own all the systems. I had a Gameboy Advance SP (which replaced my original GBA) which looked just like yours, but I traded it in for the DS in 2005. Kind of a mistake, since I was no longer able to play my original Pokemon games.
great collection, personally i collect gameboys, and i might expand to gamegear, nokingage, gamecom, ect,
nice video, loved the classic nintendo handhelds
Nice collection of handheld systems there. The DSi XL seems interesting.
I had the original GameBoy around 1990, and I still have a black GBA SP (first-gen front-lighted).
Interesting to see 7 "thumb-down" votes for this video - if you don't like a video about nintendo handheld systems, why watch it?
My first Console was a GameBoy pocket, I got it from some friend who had gotten it in a box of stuff they got from someone, I ended up getting it and the first game i had for it was The Legend of Zelda Links Awakening.
Then i got the GameBoy Advance by saving up the money i had gotten from a few jobs and then my Uncle had given me the rest of the money, My first game for it was some Bionicle game that i really enjoyed.
Great review Pete very honest for first time buyers, I gotta be honest Im not the Nintendo Kind but like the way they handle their games to be more clean and fun. Besides my gf wants a wii.
Ah Pokemon...fumbling with the trade cable, spending hours in bed with the GBC plug in light training up to evolve. So many memories!
Did you ever buy a new Pokemon game?
The DS and DS Lite have the same size screen.....both 3 inches.
I just bougt a DSI XL today, although i haven't played much on it, the bigger screens and bigger stylus make some games much better too play.
I'm getting the nintendo dsi XL midnight blue can't wait
The Gameboy SP is BY FAR my favorite handheld ever. Sadly since I played the hell out of it and my back light burned out :(
I just realized, you kinda look like Patrick Swayze.
Awesome video!
Dude is that your home? .. U have soo many games it looks like ur inside a video/game store lol. Like an old skool one tho from the 90's with just wall to wall games & consoles etc... very cool *note to self: convert home into a classic video/game store* lol :)
gameboy advance sp will always be my favroite. Ruby and Saphire, not to mention firered and leafgreen
This video is so nostalgic...
to play it in its proper resolution, but with a tiny screen that takes up approximately 1/3 of the 3ds screen, maybe less. A very weird thing with the 3DS, is when playing a DS game, you can switch wifi off, but when you switch it off, you need to quit to home to switch it on again.
LOL You chose the right T Shirt for the occasion.
Out of all the Nintendo handhelds, the GBA is was and will always be my fav. I had the same one since I was a kid so I love it lol.
The SP seems gimmicy to me, a backlight and its closeable. Big woop. I didn't buy one until years later when I got one at a yard sale for 5 bucks lol.
The DS...oh I dislike those things. I never had any "good" games for them, the touch screen is just to...eh for me to be impressed with. Maybe if I had some actual ok games I would like it more.
I got a 3DS XL Limited Edition Pikachu and it's amazing.
When I heard about the "3DS", I was thinking a DS with GameCube graphics and an accelerometer.
this is like a time machine as he did this review i was playing my 3ds :)
pete, you're right about the lite being way better in ALMOST every way than the classic.
but for me i found that i absolutely hated the buttons on the lite compared to the classic.
i had to really get used to them it was that bad for me. but other then that yes the classic is very obsolete.
but even so it still suprises me that you dont have one.
i think they would be important to collectors such as yourself since it was the first you know. antique (:
@dantendo2 Mine is a Hong Kong 240v (same as UK) it has a true backlit screen, same as the micro. I think it may have been released in US, but not in Europe.
@SharinganLust I've had that problem with my DSi, it was only the left one, but when your playing Mario Kart it's SO annoying! D:
Excellent tshirt. I love my DS. I'be got 347 games. The SP is the best
That bites i remember back in the day in middle school i'd take bathroom breaks in school to play pokemon blue
You should definitely do a video of your GBA collection.
Awesome Pete! thanks for this handheld history lessson
I can listen to you talk for hours on end.
I don't have that many Nintendo consoles, i've got 4 in total. I hope they change the 3ds name. Some people i've spoken to refuse to believe it's a whole new generation, they just think its another iteration. I'd like it to be called Gameboy 3D. That'd be sick :)
I liked the Lite a lot better. For one thing, it functioned so much better as a portable system.
Yeah, I never got any of the reiterations of the Nintendo DS. I kept my original (sadly, since I was the one who had the ugly prototype-like design), and ended up just getting the 3DS. This is an interesting situation, since most people who just got it are complaining it's very "bulky," but as someone who ONLY owned the original DS, it's actually quite "slim" for my low standards. :P
i was going to buy the dsi xl cause i skiped the normal dsi but might wait until i get a good look at the 3ds. my favorite nintendo handheld was the gameboy sp.
How do I rate this 5 stars?!
God, I HATE THIS LAYOUT! It looks like youtube didn't even finish with the design and was like "Oh well, we're out of time just put up the prototype!" Fuck this.
Nice vid, Petey, I wish I could express it with a simple star rating.
The DS Lite is great but there was no excuse for them excluding WPA wireless security from it. I am going to just wait for the 3DS before I get another DS type of system.
Haha same! I remember having to like wiggle my screen around trying to get the light on XD
when you talked about bugs life for gbc i remembered when i was about 6 my dad bought me toys story 2 for gbc bu ti got lost/ or left at store and i was sad and last year i looked the game up and it sucks ass im glad we lost that crap
wow I remeber those hand helds from my child hood did you ever hear about somthing called the gmae gear
That sucks what happen to your gameboy pocket man, I remember something similar happen to me with the gameboy advance, i had it at school with me like 8 years ago, played it on the bus then when I got to school I put it in my backpack, I hung my backpack when I got to my class, then at the end of the day I went to my backpack and It was unzipped and it was gone, it was stolen, I never got it back either or found out who did it. I'll never forget that day.
Man, i would be raging if my school had lost my gameboy after having to forcefully take it away from my hands. Even more so if they made it out as if they were blameless for it, i'm glad your principal saw sense at the end of the day.
Bought a DSi XL and it's far better than the DS lite.
Nice collection
I know. I'm trying to find the NES edition for a decent price online but I think I might just get a regular black one since the NES ones are like double the price. But I wish the still sold the games. I still have everything cardboard box for my games :p
I own the lighted system that you mentioned. It's called the Gameboy Light and was only available in Japan. I own the Gameboy Pocket as well and the GB Light is noticeably larger. Great video though. Will you do a 3DS video?
Most important question: Does the increased screen size harm the quality of the graphics of current DS games by comparison?
Then i had heard of the Nintendo DS coming out and it took me one year after it release to save up for it and i got it used, and my first game for it was Brain Age 2,
Then I got the GameBoy Advance SP (Cause' i wanted it) from by brother by giving him a Box full of LEGO's, and i had Gameboy games at the time so.
And the last one i had was the Nintendo DS Lite which i got from my Mother because it had been around the house and it was messed up a bit so i cleaned it up and now i have it.
i agree that the sp is by far the best game boy advance system. i wanted to buy the micro from a store called (play and trade) but they wanted 85$ for it! is that a good price to you? yet the sp was 15$ less than the micro. I agree the sp has best design as well. and the micro is kind of cute and small but really idk if i like it or not cause you couldnt play game boy color games
@Norg1 gotta watch out for them freak storms
How is Gameboy SP the best in terms of design when NDS is the same just larger for the screen plus it has a 2nd touch screen. Great video though.
Dude I have that Arctic blue shimmery GB pocket, I effing love the look of it still....Nintendo has lost it's style a bit.
@noVandalsquad Thanks, guys. I "liked" it. But I miss the stars!
I have a Gameboy Advance and an Advance SP I love the SP PERFECT system!!
@hitmanbrock i remember renting the playstation one i think it was for playstation man it was sooooo fun
Can we get a review on the micro???
i wish i had a huge video game collection like petedorr's
all respects pete but why would u get the DSXL when the DS3D is coming less then a year from now?? But love ur vids none the less
i can't believe you never had the original gameboy first it is the reason i play games today that is what started me that and the sega megadrive
I've brought my Nintendo DS to school a few times this year, never got taken up, and nobody stole it, because I kept it in my lunchbox? Yeah.... This year, it's going in my locker.
very nice video man!! I love my game boy micro :)
I think its great that nintendo made DSi XL, i mean i thiiiiink it is still more portable than the psp so... at least for me its ok with the size
the DSI XL is bigger then an original Gameboy!
HOLY....
