People with large audiences are going to come and takeover the game and its going to shut out people who have a small group of friends to play with. I wouldn't even try to play a game where 15,000 man guilds is possible. Isn't that why they limits to how many people can be in a guild? It would seem counterproductive to have a majority of the server in one guild. Especially since AoC is supposed to be capped at what, 10k concurrent players for each server max(correct me if I'm wrong)? Even if it's not, that's still too many players to be one singular guild, and just sounds like an awful time, and recipe for diaster. The most exciting thing about AoC for me is that I can just be a crafter. This is one of the things I loved about old MMOs like EQ and DAoC. I would log online and have mail of people requesting things for me to make or I'd get a ton of whispers/tells asking me to make something for people. In DAoC I would log on and refill my house merchant's inventory. That's almost all I did in those games. I did some raiding, but it's not really for me. MMOs today are all about raiding or PvP and tradeskills are laughable in almost all MMOs now.

The confusion comes from the words being used: server and realm. In the dev live stream the word "server" means a PC, hardware that serves data to users. A "realm" is the map of verra split in a grid, and each grid square represents a server (hardware).
The "realm" means a (one) world, a game server where players join. AOC will have many realms.
The live stream is technical and uses realm and the server words for their IT meaning, not the game meaning. This is what confused people, they thought server and realm meant playable game server (the one where your characters live).

The good thing with alliances system while keeping individual guild members in a manageable number is that internal drama can weaken alliances while keeping guilds intact. For example a guild, if e.g. unhappy, could leave an alliance without loosing their guild 'power' while allowing it to join another alliance. On the other hand, people mass leaving an individual huge guild would lead them to seek another one or create one from scratch meaning redoing all the guild leveling up stuff

PirateSoftware is interested in AoC because he tried the same shenanigans in EVE, basically trying to force his ideas of what the game should be like and what he should be able to do, onto the devs. CCP said no and so he threw his toys out of the pram and left the game. Now he thinks he can fulfil his dreams in AoC and that his ideas effectively will crush anyone else on the server is irrelevant to him.
His ideas and aggressive promotion of "his" way of playing the game is IMO dangerous for the success of AoC and Intrepid should do the smart thing and repeat the no he got from CCP.
Frankly PirateSoftware more often than not really misses the mark in his rants and while it makes for funny content, it would harm those he "targets" with it.
AoC is not EVE, will never be EVE and can't be played like EVE (hint, he repeatedly mentions how he effectively wants to do what he previously did or tried to do in EVE). AoC has some very interesting mechanics, but everything I see points to 300 person guild cap actually being too many most likely. HE effectively wants to control the server(s) his guild is on and I expect there will be several other guilds more at home in this setting which will not let that happen.

Ashes IS a social sandbox game. The commissions that you said you want to "grab after coming home from work" don't come from thin air. They will be curated by the ruling guild/community that are trying to further a specific goal with this node. Normal players will be easily able to do what they want, but the content is still decided largely by the direction that the ruling power want to go, and not by the game itself.
All the game will do is incentivize certain things relative to the node, but if players will be able to do that content is up to the node rulers. Which is why there is a popular voting system in place.

  • @Koranthus

Social Sandbox MMOs are community driven, having in-game events doesn't negate that, there are plenty of Sandbox MMOs that have quests and events for leveling, that doesn't make them themepark MMOs and he is absolutely right about it going to be community driven. Most of the action and interaction is going to come from the nodes, fighting for cities and trying to trigger events to happen on the map once people have ran through the leveling experience. This game is going to be the guild wars that guild wars couldn't deliver essentially.

I am the creator of the Unofficial Road for Dynamic Server Meshing for Star Citizen and in general have been following such implementations across the industry (SpatialOS, Coherence, Hadeon Aether Engine, Ubisoft Scalar, Dual Universe, Ashes of Creation, Star Citizen, even New World to some extend).
I have also been trying to explain Server Meshing to people to avoid confusion and foster understanding and expectations. And I have come to the conclusion that it is complicated and confusing when there are so many terms floating around that can be mistaken for each other. Especially for the layman and also when different games use different terminology. Then it gets even more difficult to differentiate terms from each other and make sense of it all.
What I have learned over the years is that there are always going to be a minority that cant be convienced about how things are going to work. They need something and they will make reality align with that. Instead of the other way around. I wouldnt worry too much about them. Make sure you avoid misunderstands as much as possible, sure. But dont get too hung about the few that dont want to understand. You are not doing it for them.

There are two major falacies here in play. The first one is that the average mmo player severely understimates the current lack of *proper* games active in the industry and Ashes of Creation is not going to have a meager number such as 10k in a single server, the potential playerbase *already* is beyond that number in NA alone and the closer this game gets to release the higher that number will be as thousands of players from other major games will migrate to AoC. The second one is that social sandbox games, being player-driven, require extra care by the players so that the dont fall like a zeppelin on fire; unlike in EVE Online where players run those dreaded excel spreadsheets to make the whole thing work for *everyone*, other sandbox-y games populated mostly by players who just want to play and not care about anything burn, like at ArcheAge, Black Desert and New World. Not saying you can't just f around and have fun without paying attention to any of this, you can just ignore it completely, just don't expect to find things not working when the game is designed to work according to the player's actions.

Honestly, peak siege/large-scale pvp involves multiple guilds in An Alliance. However most games that do this really get the numbers wrong.
Guilds should have a player cap and alliances should then have a further cap. IMO somewhere from 50 to 100 players per guild is a good size and then limiting an alliance to 2 or 3 guilds total also helps keep those large scale pvp event numbers down and reduces the huge zergs you see in games like EVE.

Albion Online has 300 player guilds but there is alliance system and bigger alliances do have 10k+ players in them.. they operate as normal guilds even though they're alliance. All on one discord. It works.
I've never played EVE, but I do know it's way more tryhard than Albion in terms of politics. So this guy pre-making a guild with 15k players is not really surprising and I believe something around that scale should exist in AoC. Especially now that they're pushing for 100+ player fights and server meshing tech.
You should look at some of Albion Online's wars. The 10k vs 10k player alliance wars that are limited my technology, but still end up working... Ashes of Creation is trying to unlock tech that Albion and EVE have been lacking eversince they released.
All in all, what that guy is doing is realistic and fitting to AoC imo. You're just used to different styled games.
Honestly someone should make a video on this and just link it, cuz this is a matter of perspective really. A lot to talk about.

    • @pawneyao6079
      @pawneyao6079 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

To add onto this, server meshing solves exact problems EVE and Albion have and AoC is developed not entirely in the same way but it is similar. So all the players that wished wars weren't as laggy as they are in mentioned games probably flock to the next game that has significantly developed this tech in hopes of stable large scale ZvZ.
If one server (realm.. like one world basically) only houses 10k players then AoC after launch will have same problems that NW had... too many servers up and server merging down the line. If this game actually gains traction it will need a few big servers rather than 10 or 20 servers of 10k.

I’ve learned from Anime that sometimes playing with less people can have better rewards. I would never join a community of 15k people. To much drama.

What I think is going to happen is that whatever region he takes over will get rolled by the entire server the way the CFC aka the imperium got rolled out of the North back in mid 2010s. There are no supers, there are no jump Gates and other than guarding most used roads there is no way to prevent people from coming into your territory.
