Those extra candle pieces could also be melted down and used to make firestarters. I take dried pinecones, pour wax over them, let them cool and harden and toss one among my kindling. I've been doing this for many years. I make my own wicks out of paper towels. I use the reverse wrap method to twist strips of paper towels to make them into wicks. Extremely cheap candles when made with shortening. P.S. I like the editing and the music you put in the video.
Thanks for explaining the purpose of the lid! Great video. A friend told me about using the "product" for an emergency source, but is certainly nice, even if a simple process, to see how it is done. Some of us do better w/visual aids.😊
I use my used fragrance cubes to make candles. After the fragrance looses it fragrance I’ll pour it into my glass jar which I have placed a wick in . Great video thanks ♥️
Main reason for not using the Crisco container to make these candles is it's not fireproof. It looks like metal (silver) inside, but it's just paper. Better to use thick glass like Mason jars.
Just a suggestion if you are making these candles for power outages, leave off the fragrance too many scented candles burning at one time can be a bit overpowering , great for gift project, but not so great if you’ve got several different scented candles burning out of necessity.
Great info! I already have all the material and learned how to make these on another channel. I've also learned to make a "forever wick" out of Carbon Felt that will work with many liquid fuel sources. 🤠
I love this! But I have a couple of questions: You said if you add essential oil to it it would be like an oil lamp. Does that mean it won't set hard? Also, is there a weird smell or any smoke when you burn it? I want to gift it to someone with allergies! Thanks!
No, it burns clean. There’s no smell at all. If you add the oils, it won’t change the texture at all. It’s gonna be exactly the same as the shortening melts into an oil. It will diffuse the fragrance into the air.
@@SurvivalHTI was going to ask the exact same question. When putting in the essential oil, do you think it would smell better than a regular candle? If that’s the case, I think I’d like to get some pretty little jars and make my own candles rather than to purchase them from the store. It would also make nice Christmas gifts. Your thoughts on this?
I tried leaving a comment on your most recent video, but it was taken down right before I could and after I watched it somehow. So I'll leave it here: That's really neat! There is oil-based food coloring that's used for candy making that should work if you want to do deeper colors.
I make these and have in my pantry for whenever I would need to use a candle. I also make the same type of "candle" using rendered beef fat. Those burn a long time too. They however definitely need some fragrance to them but, fat or oil is still very much burnable. I have tried pork fat too but, that fat is to soft. When it comes to using animal fats, it's better to use the fats that are harder when cooled/solid.
Have you tried putting a hole in the center of the lid to hang the wick (candle) from? You can put a hole in the lid with a nail then put the wick into the hole then put a spring paper clip on the wick to hold it in place then place it on the jar.
Ouch! $12. In my area. It's between $8 and $9. I have made these as well in mason jars following other directions where you put a 5-hour taper candle in there. I have several in my prep emergency pantry and thankfully have not had to use them yet
Something to keep in mind. Especially if you've lit it in a power outage and it's burned for a couple of days and put it away for next time. They are not super long shelf stable. Crisco does go rancid and the next time you need it, maybe 6 months later, it smells nasty! Refrigerator or store in as cool a place as you have.

This is basically tallow made from vegetable oil/fat, and can be used for many different purposes. I've used it for years when I make walking sticks. It not only protects the wood and keeps it from becoming brittle, but also helps bring out the natural color,(especially cedar), after scraping off the bark and sanding it down. It can also be used to recondition leather and help make it water-repellent, as well as protecting metal. It can even be used to make soap if mixed with lye made from hardwood ashes. I've never tried to before, but I imagine that it could also be mixed with dried, pulverized beef or venison jerky to make pemmican.
Pemmican i use pork fat melted down but most of the time its bacon fat melted! Preserves just as well and adds more flavor that way. To each their own.
