How to make a scented Candle with Herbs & Crystals - Like an extensive tutorial? Let me know!

  • Hi!
    In this short little video, I am showing you the steps I use when I make my candles.
    It took me many months, a lot of trying different ingredients and methods, but I finally found my perfect way of making candles!
    I recently opened an Etsy shop, where I for now, sell tealights with herbs and crystals. This month I hope to add big candles for sale as well!
    All my candles are 100% vegan and hand poured and hand embellished by me. All the crystals I use are charged in the latest full Moon and are handled with respect.
    All of my tealights are made in silence. There are no intentions set into them to keep the energy pure for each individuals own workings and enjoyment.
    If you would like to have a personalized candle, please send me a message and I am sure, together we can come up with a beautiful creation!
    www.etsy.com/shop/SadvCreatio...
    Hopefully you like this video and I would be happy to make a more elaborated tutorial if you would like to see it! Just let me know in the comments, and I will make it happen!
    Have an amazing day!
    Much love,
    Chloe.

    You made it so pretty and perf. My herbs keep sinking to the bottom and the wax hasn't been sealing smoothly lol

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That happens to me also, then you have to wait a little longer for your wax to be cooler and then they will stay on top of the wax.
      How hot do you pour your wax? Maybe try to make your container warm in hot water. It is possible that the wax gets a big shock when it hits the cold glass/metal or whatever you use to make your candles. Then you can get holes and the surface won't be a smooth as you would like. Good luck!

    this may be a silly question but what will happen to the crystals? like when the candle is all done what do you do with the crystals? do we just throw them out or are they salvageable? what do you do?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is a great question!
      For the big crystal at the top I recommend to take it out during the first burn of the candle. Some crystals I add are pretty big and the burn of the candle will be less good but also the flame can touch the crystal and not all crystals can stand heat that well.
      The smaller ones you can leave in or also take out. My dad is a pro at removing the crystals at the end. If you don't wait till the candle is burned completely (which you really shouldn't with a candle) you can whip them out when the last bit of wax is still a bit warm, take out the crystals and clean them. :)
      Hope this helps!

      A friend of mine makes my logo and label designs. I put the label on the candle from this video in a Word document and then I printed it (I do have to cut them because Word is kinda crappy to work with), but for a project I am currently working on, we custom made the labels and sent them to a company who printed them so they look more professional.

    I love this video! I'm looking for unique candle making ideas because I'd like to start making my own. You make it look so simple!! I really wanna try this. At 4:18 you mention because of the heavy amethyst the wax will blow up.... Is that a typo or is that a real possibility? Thank you so much for the inspiration 😊

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi!
      Thank you for your kind words!
      No it is not a typo, but maybe it is written a bit unclear. When you add any stone to wax that is in it's drying process, it can happen that because of the pressure of the stone, air can come in the wax or movement of the wax will happen. In this case you can see that the wax will bubble to the surface next to the stone.
      That is all I mean by blow up. Movement will happen when you add anything to the candle, and your drying surface will be less smooth.
      I hope this helps, and good luck with your candle adventure! ❤

    These are so beautiful, can you tell me your experience with the herbs catching fire? I've wanted to do some like this but have been warned numerously not to for the hazard they pose. Any info is greatly appreciated.

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Renee!
      If you make sure the herbs aren't too close to the wicks, there is no hazard. Sometimes big rose buds who touch the flames can catch fire, but it's easy to blow them out. For the rest of the smaller herbs, they just float in the wax so they become wet and nothing will happen as for my experience. I have never had any complaints from costumers.

    have a question for you and I hope to hear from you if you have time! I’m currently making beef Tallow Candles but I’m having a difficult time finding a cost effective way to add scent. I have used essential oil‘s but I have to use over 60 drops to even get a smell. I don’t want to use fragrance oils because they’re not natural. Would you recommend that I mix the tallow with another fat like coconut oil? Do you think these two would mix well or is there another one you would recommend?

      I always recommend taking the big crystals on top out during the first time burning a candle. Depending on the size, because some crystals can fall on top of the wicks and drown them and not all crystals can stand heat so they lose their healing properties.

    How do you know what oils to use for heat candle or does it matter what scents you use?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I order my scents from websites who are specialised in making candles so where they also sell whicks and wax. I believe it is okay to just use essential oils, but I want to be sure my candles are safe as I also sell them. The wax I use is vegan, so it's harder to get the scent very strong so I like to only use scents that are made specifically for candles.

  • @lynneannec
    @lynneannec 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have been told that herbs/flowers etc. will catch on fire, and crystals will explode in candles. What should be done to ensure this doesn’t happen when the candle is lit? I saw that in Australia it is illegal to have candles with items in them that don’t burn away in 5 seconds or less, so for these types of candles you must remove the roses and crystals before lighting. I would really like to make and sell these types of candles in the US, so any tips on doing so without any fire hazards would be greatly appreciated ❤️Thank you - great tutorial!

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hej!
      I always advise you to remove bigger herbs and crystals before the first burning, just in case. And it is wise to never leave a candle like this out of sight or leave the room while having this lit because you never know.
      Most of the time the herbs will float in the wax and won't catch fire, but rosebuds for example are bigger so they also float above the wax and they can drift towards a wick and can catch fire.
      It is a use at own risk situation, people should be very aware of the dangers. I always include a warning sign with clear instructions on how to use a candle like this. Some people don't even lit their candle because they think it's too pretty to be used, but personally I have never had any bad experiences with my candles and whenever I sold one, I only received good feedback. Sometimes, I like to get back to customers and ask them about their experiences so I can learn from it for future candles I make.

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So if you want to stay on the safe side, use only small or very little herbs. You can also only put them in the bottom of your candle. That also looks very pretty. Just pour a little amount of wax in a jar, put your herbs of choise in. If you use a glass jar, make sure you can see them against the glass and wait for it to set completely before you pour in the rest of the wax (without herbs). That will give you a very pretty candle as well, and makes for safer use. And then you can always put a few bigger ones on top for decoration, but make sure you let your costumers know to remove them before burning the candle.
      Goodluck with your journey! ✨️❤️

      Hej!
      It depends on a lot of things actually. How big your jar is, how hot you pour your wax and where you want your herbs in your candle.
      For a size like this it can take up to 45 min for me to wait before the wax is where I want it to be for me to place my herbs. It is really trying a lot of times and learning what works best for you. Good luck! 🌿

      I buy my oils online at a local candle shop where they sell oils especially suitable to use in candles as not all essential oils will work. Also for my wax, glasses, wicks and colourings, I shop them all online. For herbs I go to my local herb/tea shops or you can also buy them online. Hi,
      You can add dried flowers, but there is always a risk for them to catch fire and to burn. Sometimes I add big dried rose buds, but if they are too close to the wick, they will catch fire.
      I don't know which other toppings you mean?

    Approx how long do you let it cool before you put the dried herbs on top?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on how big the candle is and how long it takes for the candle to cool down. With a candle this size it can take up to 45 min before I can start to add herbs. The best trick is to start adding your toppings and when they sink to the bottom of the candle, you are too early. It's really trial and error and depends on what kind of wax and glass size you use. If you have done it a few times, you start to recognize the way the wax works and when it is time to start your toppings! :)

    Does it burn well with crystals and flowers etc? would the larger things need to be removed before burning?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always recommend to remove bigger things such as crystals. The flowers will just float in the melting wax and won't cause any harm. Bigger flowers/herbs can always catch fire, so it is advised to keep a close eye on them or remove them just in case :).

      @TurasOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lady Joy!
      Up until now, I have not had any stories about candles I have made and sold that have been caught on fire or from people who make their own!
      I always add an extra warning and advice people to remove big herbs away from the wicks, but if a candle burns long enough, the herbs will float in the wax and occasionally a flower bud will catch on fire which you can remove or blow out and move out of the way. No houses on fire yet!

    Where do you get your dried flowers and crystals from? And how do you know how much oil to add to the wax?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get my herbs from my local tea shops or online where they sell dried herbs. Same with crystals. I go to wholesale stores in my neighbourhood or online, depends on what I need.
      There is a calculation you can do which you can probably find online where they tell you how much wax compared to oil you need, but I do it by smell and by feeling. When my wax is below 85 degrees Celsius, I add as much oil as I feel is needed. :)

      @@itsmeorwhatever627 Exactly! I always make sure I don't use big herbs. Once the candle is lit, they mostly float in the wax, so as long as they don't come near the wick you are safe. When you say, "because of the heavy Amethyst the wax will blow up" what do you mean by that? Like air bubbles?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if it is written a bit unclear. When you add any stone to wax that is in it's drying process, it can happen that because of the pressure of the stone, air can come in the wax or movement of the wax will happen. In this case you can see that the wax will bubble to the surface next to the stone. Exactly like air bubbles. :)
      That is all I mean by blow up. Movement will happen when you add anything to the candle, and your drying surface will be less smooth.
      I hope this helps. ❤

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because of the bigger Amethyst crystal I add to the top and slightly push into the wax, the wax besides it will blow to the surface and create bubbles. That will make the top layer of the candle less smooth, so in the video I try to "hide"(fix) that with adding more herbs over the little wax bubbles. The wax does not explode, no worries. It just floats up to the surface more because at a different place in the candle, something heavy is added. Hope this helps :)

      @@TurasOfficial When it's ready to cool and also how long after should I set flowers, herbs and/or crystals or trinkets?

    • @TurasOfficial
      @TurasOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      @C.R. Persevering Pisces That really depends on what you want to achieve. If you want your herbs to float in your candle, you can do it fairly quickly. If you only want herbs on top, you should wait a bit longer and then see how they float in/on the wax and if it is set enough for bigger flowers to stay on the surface. It is a bit hard to explain, but it is really trying and see what happens. Sometimes, after pouring a candle, I can check the candle for an hour because I keep coming back to see how set the wax is and how the herbs are reacting with it.
      What I don't prefer to do myself, but what I see a lot of people doing when they add herbs, is that they first make the candle without, let it set completely and then take a blow torch and only melt the surface again and then stick in the herbs/flowers/crystals of their preference. Then you won't have the problem of anything falling to the bottom of the candle or messing up the surface of it because of air bubbles.

      Hi Moni!
      I understand your concerns. I have tested my candles multiple times before selling them by friends and family and nothing has ever happened.
      People need to know they need to be extra cautious when burning candles like this. Yes, (bigger) herbs can catch fire and then they need to be blown out or removed from the candle. But from my experience, a lot of herbs float in the wax and if you place them far away from the wicks, it will be fine.
      I always recommend to remove the crystal during the first few minutes of burning the candle for safety reasons and for not wasting any beautiful stones.
      I plan to post a time lapse of burning one of my candles, hope to figure out how to get the proper lighting soon!
      Have a great day,
      Chloe.
