- A Japan Airlines plane caught fire on the runway of Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Tuesday (Jan 2). The airline says all 379 passengers and crew have been evacuated.

Thankfully all passengers and crew were evacuated safely. Video from one of the passengers onboard the plane showed the calmness of the passengers. Staying calm, and the ability to follow good instructions from the captain certainly played a big role in successfully evacuating everyone. It is unfortunate that possibly at least 5 of the people on the other plane are unaccounted for......Please stay strong and pray for Japan to strongly overcome this setback.

It is citizens air craft of JAL516 and Japan coast guard’s airplane.
Hey Im a Japanese watching this news right now. So two plane had crashed together, and all passengers in Japan airline had survived but the other 5 people on the other plain had died. The other plane was there to bring food and supplies to Ishikawa. I’m sorry that my English is bad but this is the situation. Yesterday there was a giant earthquake and 48people died.

I am a Japanese.
In Japan, the beginning of the new year is the most important period, and the period from January 1st to 3rd is called ``Sanganichi'' ,when many people return to their hometowns and have a good time by eating a feast, watching TV,going to shrine or enjoying shopping with their families. I'm surprised at how many things are happening so early in the new year.
Although this is how it started, I hope it will be a year where as many people as possible can spend a peaceful time.

JAL's A350-900 collided with MA722 "Mizunagi 1" (Bombardier DHC-8-Q300) belonging to Japan Coast Guard Haneda Air Base.
All 379 passengers and crew members on the JAL plane escaped safely.
Five of the six members of the Japan Coast Guard crew are unknown.

Crash 'could have been caused by runway incursion'
Former air traffic controller Michele Robson has said initial information suggests the collision was caused by a runway incursion - such as the Coast Guard aircraft entering the runway when it shouldn't have.
She said there "needs to be proper investigation" before conclusions are drawn, but a series of factors meant the larger Japan Airlines plane might not have known the Coast Guard aircraft was on the runway.
One such factor is that because it was dark, there was less visibility both from the air traffic control tower and for the Japan Airlines pilot.
Tokyo International Airport has "all the safety equipment you'd expect at major airport", including a runway incursion alert system.
But Ms Robson said the alert likely wouldn't have set off because the Japan Airlines flight was not on the runway when the Coast Guard plane entered.
She also said it appeared the Coast Guard aircraft did not have an ADS-B transponder, which is used to transmit highly accurate information about an aircraft's position to ground controllers and directly to other aircraft.
Normally you would expect all flights from a large international airport to carry these transponders, Ms Robson said, but this appeared to be an unusual situation where the Coast Guard flight was travelling to help with earthquake relief.
Ms Robson said the lack of ADS-B transponder would have made the Coast Guard plane "less visible" if it didn't do what it was expected it would do.
The "split second timing" would have meant it "wouldn't have taken more than a few seconds for the aircraft to get on the runway as the other plane was landing".
"At that point, with a large passenger jet, it probably wouldn't have seen the smaller aircraft in the dark," she said.
The former air traffic controller said this is "one of the most dangerous factors in terms of airport incidents".
Another factor may have been that the airport uses a "mixed mode" runway - meaning both departures and arrivals use the same runways.
Although they still have a "generally good safety record", it is safer to use separate runways for departures and arrivals - as is the case at Heathrow Airport, for example.

Tragic crash most likely caused by the rush and emergency aid relief by the coastguard to the earthquake affected zones. Good thing everyone was safe but still need to investigate and punish for bad coordination!

I don't know why the firemen even bothered to turn up for this, the efforts they put in to putting the fire out were pathetic, it was only a small fire at first, and could've easily be got under control, they looked like they were playing with it, using water, that didn't even look to have enough pressure forcing through the pipes. It would've been put out using foam in under 10 minutes in this countrry.
