Here is a tip for sharpening watercolor (and regular colored pencils): rotate the SHARPENER AROUND the pencil-holding the pencil in one position, NOT rotating the pencil inside the sharpener. This helps keep the soft "leads" from breaking inside the wooden outer pencil.

I've moved away from sharpeners for watercolour pencils, I find them too wasteful. The core is valuable colour but each time we put it in a sharpener, more than %50 of the cone we create goes in the bin. Unlike working with normal colour pencils, we don't always need a sharp point and in fact I prefer to side shade as it produces less retained pencil marks. We don't need to fill the divots and get rid of the white bits as we do in colour pencil. We get rid of them when we apply water. I sharpen watercolour pencils with a sharp knife (Scalpel with a standard 10A blade) and only par back the wood to expose core. Rotating the pencil as I side shade, retains a point naturally without any waste and gives me more exposed core for picking up colour with a wet brush when needed. This more bullet shaped tip I find more versatile, giving me smoother laydown, less frequent need to sharpen and sufficient point when I need it. Since I stopped using a sharpener about 5 years ago, I have found my watercolour pencils last way longer and I get virtually no breakage.

Thank you for this video! There is a serious lacking on TH-cam in 'how to use Watercolor Pencils', and yours is awesome! I appreciate that you are showing how to use these in a realistic way as opposed to just unboxing, swatching, and suggesting or 'trying for the first time'. I've been playing with my watercolor pencils and want to use them as an under-painting for colored pencils to speed up some of the 30 hour portraits. Thank you again! If you feel like making more watercolor pencils videos, I'd definitely watch! :-)

I paint watercolour succulents and I feel like the ones I've done are a lot easier than how you've taught us to use watercolour pencils. (Not a fault of yours, you have a very comprehensive and relaxing tutorial here, it's just so much more involved, imo, than I thought watercolour pencils are! Wow. I have so much more respect for watercolour pencil pieces and artists now, knowing all they go through. I know for a fact that if I were to try, I'd end up with a super muddy mess)
I started watercolour (again. I used to use tube watercolour almost as I would acrylics. It was such a waste :S) and before I got back into my tube Windsor & Newtons, I started with aquarelle crayons, which proved to have a lot of chalkiness, and then I switched to watercolour pencils. I tried using them both by using my brush on the paint itself, then putting the paint on paper. Then I realized I should just dig my watercolours back out again :S.
    Anyway back to my point:
So when I saw you had a tutorial I thought it would be fun to see how they're supposed to be used, and man am I ever glad I decided to just get out my regular watercolours. I just seem to understand them so much better.

Thank you for all the tips. In my recent Christmas cards, I used watercolour pencils to handpaint them. I loved using them, though I still have the leads break on me.

Can you do the drawing in regular pencil first and then outline it in the watercolor pencils and then do water will the ink from the regular pencil ruin the colors from the water color pencils? I hope this makes sense.

I just got a lovely new coloring book, but it's printed on Watercolor Paper. My Prismacolors don't work as well. They leave a lot of white spaces on such rough paper. Using the blending pencil may result not only in scratching the pigment off the paper, but in destroying the paper itself.
Thank you for letting me know which Watercolor pencils to buy. I too hate pencils that break.
