      I have the exact same workflow, but the first thing I do is to color correct all the footage (white balance, skin tones etc.), do you do this at the same time as you do color grading?

    Thank you, this was so useful. Glad Im not the only one who puts all the footage in the sequence then starts to cut! I'd love to know if and how you categorize the footage based on if its B roll, or interview, etc., once its in the sequence. I sometimes work with 8 hours of footage from an event, and still trying to find a more efficient work flow for that. Thanks again!

    Thanks, good tutorial.
    - What is the need for the ProRes files, when you have the Premiere project file? Can't you just generate new output files from that?
    - Do you keep the original source files outside of Premiere? Doesn't renaming the files makes complicate to find the original source files froma backup?
    - last, what do you do if you have an action camera footage that is 10, 20 , 30 min long because camera kept recording, and you have only 1 minute if interesting stuff? Do you convert the file and keep only the relevant part?

    Hey Matti, hope you are doing well on this Christmas eve. Question for you, when you have a big project - like if you were doing a wedding video and you have a whole day's worth of footage - do you still drop all the clips into the sequence and just sort through the several hundred clips? Or does your flow change for that?

  • @Gary_W
    @Gary_W 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Matti I am very enjoying your videos. Been subscribing for a while but this is my first time commenting. Thank you for the extremely helpful contents.
    Question, since I am not using Premiere Pro, my video editor doesn't have that Lightroom/Camera Raw-like Lumetri adjustment, and my only option is to use curve. Do you have any tips on how to use curve to mimic the Lumetri adjustment(i.e how to set the curve to mimic shadow, highlight, black, white, and such)? Thank you in advance :)

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably have some sort of 3 way color corrector if you have curves. Curves are great for changing contrast and exposure but I dont like them for colors at all. Its just no intuitive enough but you basically just have to go into the different color channels and tweak them

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also have multiple output modules for one job in AME. I usually hit ctrl/cmd+d with the output setting selected. This way you transfer the project to AME once (can take a lot of time especially with asset heavy AE projects) and it encodes all versions in ONE GO! Noooiiiicce.

    Hi Matti thanks for the video.
    In the preview it seemed to me you are using the 13" macbook pro, is that correct?
    I'm just about to get a mac myself this days and I'm doing tons of researches to see which it would be better. It seems that they all recommend the 15" cause the 13" won't work very well with 4k footage but I'd like it much better because of the portability. Please let me know what are your experiences cheers!

    Great to see your workflow as I dive into Premier...
    Q. I didn't see you convert your footage to ProRes before editing, which I thought I needed to do before importing the footage. I've been converting to ProRes and sorting my files from out of camera and ProRes footage. Or does the ProRes footage just run smoother in Premier instead of the camera files?
    Would love to see some After Effects tutorials too.
    Cheers

    @ 7:36 you talk about rendering out a prores version. I do that too. But besides a master file I export an "archive" version as well. That archive version is one where I stripped the music and graphics. So, I only have the footage with the ambient sound. It happened before that I had to reuse the footage at some TV stations I work for. This footage is not ruined by any titles and music. I can use it right away.

  • @atldj1

    Very helpful! Question regarding workflow and converting footage to prores (from one of your other videos). Is it recommended to convert all of the footage to Apple prores prior to creating the Premeire project and then importing the prores files into the project? Also, would I end up keeping prores and the original .mov files on a HD? I'm thinking this is a lot of HD space. Thanks in advance

    Do you choose your soundtrack before going out there and start filming? I might think so.. this might help with getting more sync with the music.

  • @EdwinvandenAkker
    @EdwinvandenAkker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I usually put my audio effects in the Audio Track Mixer. If, in some instance, I need to change it, I only have to do it in one place. Sometimes it helps to make sub-groups and add certain effects, like multiband or normal compressor, on that sub track. It just help me to change and tweak things in one place.
    Also, I added volume adjustment shortcuts. I use Ctrl+[ for decreasing volume and Ctrl+] for increasing. I also added the SHIFT key to increase more (increase many it is called, if I remember well).
    These shortcuts make it simple to adjust the volume: Just select the clips, hit the shortcuts, and it will get me very close to where I need it to be. I usually don't change it anywhere else.
    In case I have some music, and a quote or soundbite is coming up, I make cuts in the music clip where I need to decrease the volume. I add crossfades at the cuts. Finally, I use the shortcuts above, to lower the volume by about 3 or 6db (1x or 2x SHIFT+CTRL+[ ).
    This method works very fast. If I need to change the moment the volume changes, I don't have to mess with the rubber band key-frames. I just select the cut using the Roll-Tool, and move the cut/edit to the right place by dragging or using the E-key to move it to the play-head.

    Love this video, so informative. Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm new to this! Do you create and add your titles in Premier or After Effects

    Hey really helpful video. Thanks for sharing your workflow. I'm a beginner of making videos and get always upset about the big temporory files while editing some HD clips, sometimes it ended up using up almost all the storage space on my Mac (250G) How do you deal with this problem? Can I use my hard disk for it?

    Dude I’ve been waiting for someone to post a video like this. Thank you! I have a couple question... how long did that edit take you from import to export?
    Are those export settings the same if your are using different cameras (G7x, GoPro sess 5, mavic pro, iPhone)?
    Where do you get your sound effects?
    Can you please do the video on presets. I feel that will cut my editing time down?

    My GOD! The colors on that A Roll are amazing, I'm really a beginner, but I would love to know how to grade like that for my TH-cam videos.

    Why is VBR2 pass better than CBR? I know one is constant and one is variable, I've just seen other vids saying one or the other is best

    Great Video..I have one question..How do you upload to TH-cam? Do you publish straight from Premiere or do up load via web browser? Thanks in advance

    I watch your Videos and you are so Good at what you do. Every time i edit a 15 minute or longer video with 45 minutes of video footage on my camera, it takes me forever! Curious to know how long does it take you to edit a 15 minute video? I know you said learn, make,& repeat to get better but this process is driving me Mad! lol! Please tell me it gets better. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video. Quick question (and you may have answered this in another video), how long on average does it take you to edit various length films? How much does it depend on the volume of footage you captured? Thanks!
