You know what I'd love - it'd be great Dom if you could give John 15 minutes in front of the camera and ask him about his experiences. He's an absolutely cool guy - what's his story? Would love to know
John is so in his comfort zone there 😂 good to see a man that can rattle off the timing sequence of an old caddy, not many left that would even know what it is.
Loving the caddy videos. I’ve got a mk1 gti cabriolet that’s been sitting in the garage for the last 10 years. Inspiring me to get my finger out over the winter. They are so simple to work on compared to modern cars. Real back to basics spannering 👍
Brings back memories, did most of these jobs on mine during the many years I had it, plus new clutch at 106,000 miles... I had an Ivor Williams top on mine too!
I ran a Diesel Caddy for a few years 20 years ago, along with a Ifor Williams. If the water pump and housing was the original most of the bolts holding it together would have sheared off. The one with plastic impellor would have been a relatively recent replacement. Keep up the good work. T-cut on the rear perspex window will work miracles.
Thanks Dom, you and the team make my Sunday viewing something to always look forward to. I must say though that this Caddy does appear to have its fair share of rust......................
Thanks John ! Wendy seems unusually excited by this Caddy, she's never ridden in one before, right Dom ? Look forward to refreshed wheels and tires, but that will of course demand you show the body and paint some TLC too ! More content, I'm guessing ? Maybe tape off the damaged areas and sandblast away rust to permit a good metal anti rust paint treatment with the familiar german paint used on wheels if it can be color matched, or tinted perhaps to match fade/aging effects well enough to be serviceable ?
Hi Dom. The timing of this video is perfect. I am currently refurbishing the steel wheels on my Mk1 Golf. I have had them shot blasted and I sprayed them with epoxy mastic. Before I paint them I was contemplating weather or not to seam seal the joint, I already got an amount of the epoxy mastic down into the joint using a fine paint brush. Having watched this video you have convinced me to go with the seam sealant. Cheers.
This reminds me of my old polo spent a good part of the summer transferring everything from an accident damaged one to a new(replacement) bodyshell, with my late Father. Ran it for the that autumn, rolled it in the first frost (I was only 19) and did it all again before Christmas. 😆 you can't keep an old VW down, your Caddy's the same blue as my second polo👍 found a set of Passat alloys fitted thought it looked great.
I look forward to seeing you every Sunday morning. You’ve got a great show and the repair shop is also one of my favorites. I live in Canterbury New Hampshire in the USA. Thanks for your commitment to these shows. John*
Good idea on the seam sealer between the two sections of the wheels. I’ve got some Triumph ones to be painting shortly so I’ll be stealing that tip I think!
Always check the plastic seal plug in the middle of the drive yoke that covers the retaining circlip . If it leaks or comes out gear oil seeps down the splines and dilutes the CV grease and the joint breaks . Seen that more than once over the years working on VW s
3:00 Remember to put the rubber on first! Quite! I wonder how many oldies like me remember Duraplug 13A plugs. These had a cover with a loop through which the cable was passed. It was necessary to place the cover over the cable before wiring to the plug body connections. It was infuriating to go through the process of wiring up, only to discover that you'd forgotten to put the cover on first. As a result the overwhelming majority of Duraplugs have been cut to permit post-wiring fitting; at least mine have.
Hi Dom great video as usual. The wife and I have just booked up for your book singing on Friday looking forward to meet you. I'm be the chap in the steem punk hat. Thanks Moggy Mark and Sue.
Already bought your book as a present. Pity I did not wait until your signing event on Friday 8th. Still, I can thoroughly recommend the book. Great stuff.
Hey Dom, I've enjoyed your content here and over the years on the Repair Shop. What year is the Caddy? I had a 78 (called Rabbit and Rabbit Pickup in the US) back in the early 90s. Bought it cheap, it had a junk yard hood (bonnet) that was red and the car was black. I painted that, changed a CV joint (seeing this video brought that back to mind), did a tune up and I was on the road. It was a bottom of the line model with no sway bars. I rode in a friend's GTI and it was nice. Rode and handled well. I had considered upgrading mine as it was rather squirrely at times, which wound up getting me in an accident. Damage was not too bad but I ended up selling the car. The young lady that bought it had never driven a stick. So I gave her a quick lesson while taking her home when she bought the car. She was a coworker of my wife's and when I asked her how the girl that bought it was doing, she told me her brother helped her with shifting and she was driving it everyday and was having fun with it. See ya on the next!
One of my favourite small cars of days done by. I owned a ton of them and they were always super. My favourite - a metallic blue Mk1 with a warmed up 1300cc engine. So quick and light to drive. I looked for a G30 for ages but didn't find one to add to my fleet.
Awesome Dominic, great video! Most things I can fix but engines are just smoke and mirrors to me, really enjoyed the video though and love seeing good old mechanical stuff getting fixed! Good luck with the MOT...fingers crossed 👍🙂
First mechanical job I ever did ,change the water pump on a vw jetta. It ran like a dream ,I wouldn't even attempt to work on a car engine today. Excellent work Dom.
Reminds me how many times I did this on Jaguar XK engines and Datsun 240Z and 260Z engines over 50 years. My dad was a professional mechanic and I sort of picked it up from him even though my professional career was IT. Jon definitely ticked all the boxes on this one.
Thanks for the video; very interesting, informative and entertaining as always. Do you intend to do much restoration to the bodywork when you have finished the mechanical work ?
That idler wheel there I wanted a new one for my Toyota landcruiser the main stealers wanted £110 6 years ago I thought no ,simply push old bearing out and replace with new cost me £10 happy days 😊😊
Very nice. I would have liked to see how you got the hex bolts out of the crank pulley though. Is it a bit late in the game to tell John that eccentric is not properly pronounced "a sentric?" We do want to be proper. 😉
Dom . Was it a case of one big nut removing one big nut ? 😂 And spot on with the powder coating , it's no good for suspension components or where there's direct contact with other components . I always paint these in 2pack. As you said Dom you can touch a 2 pack chip or scratch . Although l guarantee l will get negative comments . Sounds sweet too ! Jon was certainly in his element today and so was Wendy !😊😊
Love a bit of mechanicing with you two! Would that paint be any good for a chassis repaint on a TVR 3000M? Is it a good tough finish once dry and can it be applied with a brush or is it spray only?
Great job that it started! Do you ever go to John's and help him with vehicles he's working on, and if so what have you or are you working on there? Just curious.
Ran a garage business for 35 years, always remove plugs or glowplugs on a diesel, when turning over by hand you are not fighting compression and tensioning is more reliable 😉
Pity about the black wheels Dom, silver makes the whole unit look lighter . With black wheels it looks lacking in contrast visually. Nice job with the service.
This vehicle's engine bay is very similar to the '78 VW Scirocco I had when I was 17-18 years old. I think it's same engine? I hated that timing belt tensioner... it was always going bad. I wonder if I overtightened it? Most likely I did. Could have also been terribly cheap parts from Pep Boys too. 😀
@DominicChineas a great idea - I have a Skoda Octavia vrs with the 180bhp version in it 🙂 Although after all the entertaining fettling on the current engine you probably would want to wait a bit before changing it out!
Powder coat is crap . It never adheres to the base metal as well as a proper liquid coating system. It's cheap and easy to apply a thick non-porous coat , but any damage to the coat will allow it to fall off.
You know what I'd love - it'd be great Dom if you could give John 15 minutes in front of the camera and ask him about his experiences. He's an absolutely cool guy - what's his story? Would love to know
Thanks for being reliable today: four of my Sunday TH-camrs let me down today, but Dom, John, and Wendy were all present and correct.
We haven’t missed a Sunday yet!
John is so in his comfort zone there 😂 good to see a man that can rattle off the timing sequence of an old caddy, not many left that would even know what it is.
Thank you for giving me something informative yet relaxing every Sunday to watch. It's stressful times here in the US.
Loving the caddy videos. I’ve got a mk1 gti cabriolet that’s been sitting in the garage for the last 10 years. Inspiring me to get my finger out over the winter. They are so simple to work on compared to modern cars. Real back to basics spannering 👍
Get it out
Brings back memories, did most of these jobs on mine during the many years I had it, plus new clutch at 106,000 miles... I had an Ivor Williams top on mine too!
You know Wendy was yelling at you to get back on the 356!
Nice to see you and John bringing the Caddy back to life. Onward toi the next edition.

I love that it started right up first shot. No fiddling around. Good job.
Love those Mk. 1 Caddy’s! Chuffed to see it running!
How many men does it take to admire a running engine? 😂 well done Jon-Dom 🎉
Who won the pumpkin carving?
Great progress, looking forward to seeing another MK1 back on the road. I miss mine!
GREAT JOB, Dom & Jon! - started first time! 👍👍👍
with the ifor williams gone , you need the roll bar i have for a mk1... got your name on it! you have to love the simplicity of these old things.
you're right about the powder coating any thing that's coated rusts out quicker once it gets underneath
Thanks John ! Wendy seems unusually excited by this Caddy, she's never ridden in one before, right Dom ? Thanks 👍
Well done Dom and Jon! Alway a pleasure to watch a master at work (and to see Wendy too), lol. Thanks for sharing.
Must be great having the oracle helping, john is an encyclopaedia
Cheers Dom
Once again I sit here in absolute awe of yours and John's talents (mostly John) thanks so much for these super enjoyable videos.

I love this Hairy version of Wheeler Dealers… keep it up you guys, you’re on the gold now!
Steady on Jon, people may think you're a professional.
I can't make the book-signing, but I have pre-ordered the book! Looking forward to a good read...
Hi Dom great video as usual. The wife and I have just booked up for your book singing on Friday looking forward to meet you.

Thanks so much, looking forward to meeting you!

Thank you for the kind words about the book! If you want to bring it down I can sign it for you!
Never a doubt! He isn’t called HonestJon by accident 😊
Nice easy job for Jon this week. Air filter and housing? That old foam filter will be disintegrating into the engine.
Always handy to get tips about good paint 👍
John should be on The Repair Shop, he would make a good Celeb LOL, Great work Guy's !!! 😀😀👍👍💪.
Been there, done that, had the t-shirt. Mk.2 Scirocco.
P.s. take spark plugs out when turning the engine over to check timing belt tension.

Cambelt on the outside of the engine! what an clever idea!

Excellent work Dom & John engine running smooth as
Thanks Dominic. Great video.
Nice job!! Those discoloured plastic rear windows can be a problem to find, I replaced mine with some tinted laminated glass looks a lot nicer.
It’s already been removed!
I’ve had a really hard and difficult weekend and you always cheer me up, thank you Dom and John. Keep up the great vids 😊
Good work Dom....John knows his way round VW's i suspect.
Love it ! Well done. Great to see some proper ‘engineering’ on a normal car rather than some TH-camr’s Ferrari.
Awesome Dominic, great video! Most things I can fix but engines are just smoke and mirrors to me, really enjoyed the video though and love seeing good old mechanical stuff getting fixed! Good luck with the MOT...fingers crossed 👍🙂
Great job guys, think Wendy was very pleased,👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🤠
She can’t wait for her first ride!
Did anyone else think they’d got a message while John was tensioning the cam belt? 😂
Well done boys, thanks for the video.👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant.
Caddy progressing very well guys, well done!
Poor John, fighting compression. Would have been a good time for those new spark plugs.
I have to say there is so much info and insights coming from this which is brilliant, well done guys
Glad you enjoyed it
I think I would have changed the hoses while I was in there, for complete full peace of mind.
Neat little pickup.
That CV boot job was great - almost like it was designed to be serviced! Shame modern designs aren't the same.
We all need mates like John, 👍 great to hear it running.
I do enjoy a bit of spannering....well done chaps
First mechanical job I ever did ,change the water pump on a vw jetta. It ran like a dream ,I wouldn't even attempt to work on a car engine today. Excellent work Dom.
It’s a brand new old one! 🤓
Surely Dom you must’ve gone and got John his obligatory cup of coffee and muffin
I think Wendy was saying to Like & Subscribe.
Good progress Dom & John.
dom yes you got to sign your book it will be worth a fortune in years to come ha ha ha another great vid there fella
Spot on video, great work John.
I very much enjoy seeing you split your time across projects. It keeps it interesting ( it keeps us guessing, for sure!).
Glad you enjoy it!
So glad you took the back off, it was horrific!
Another project where you get it on the first try... excellent.
Thanks
I better start hinting for a Christmas book.

Keep up the variety of posts; thanks
Well done chaps!!
Another thoroughly excellent video Dom. A Sunday treat.
I’ve pre-ordered your book, but now you’re tempting me to get the on the ferry for Friday 🤔😁
Do it!! See you Friday!
Thanks for the video; very interesting, informative and entertaining as always. Do you intend to do much restoration to the bodywork when you have finished the mechanical work ?

Great post guys
Dom how many more excuses can you find for avoiding the Porsche, each week I excitedly tune in only to be disappointed yet again, great video though 😂
I think it's a commercial vehicle coach paint used with or without harder. I've used a similar product I think it was called Turnol. 😊

There is talk of me helping him with building something in the future yes!
Did you change the other drive shaft boots?
They had been done already!
Spot on 👌
Thank you kindly
Hey Dom ❤ Your channel can wafer it to be released ( Monday here in New Zealand) do you have honest John's you tube channel link??
Ran a garage business for 35 years, always remove plugs or glowplugs on a diesel, when turning over by hand you are not fighting compression and tensioning is more reliable 😉
“It’s not an advert”… followed by, link in the description below, means it’s absolutely an advert. Don’t blame you Dom, but you know what I mean. 😊
It’s literally my book! Haha thank you for watching
Another great video 👍 What would you do without John 😀
Pity about the black wheels Dom, silver makes the whole unit look lighter . With black wheels it looks lacking in contrast visually.
Nice job with the service.
I do love Jon's laugh!
Hi get a small marquee out there if allowed then you can work in the dry, about £400 ish

Sorry a puzzled American here; why are you calling that a caddy? I even put on the "close caption" to make sure I was hearing correctly
That’s what they are called here!
@@DominicChineasIt adds the golfing references in the VW names.

🎉🎉👍👍👍😀😀
If you hold the oil bottle sideways it won’t gasp for air and glug out.
Will you be lowering it?
Of course!!
Glad you hear! 👌
