I have been stumbling through this bass line for over 20 years. You cleared up so many mistakes I was making in 13 minutes. Where have you been all my life? Thank you!! You are an amazing teacher!! Peace and Love!!
I've played the song live and I just fake my way through it but after just going through this a couple of times with you I am on closer to playing it faithfully. I can feel it coming. Well done, Ari. Thank you!
I’m a guitarist that faked bass for years. I started taking Ari’s bass lessons online and the techniques and knowledge I’ve gotten from her course is priceless.
Much gratitude. You are an amazing teacher. Very hard to find videos with instructors who so completely explain how to approach learning a challenging piece through their own well-thought-out-&-designed multiple access points. May you and yours be safe during these trying times.
Thank you I'm learning quite a lot from this it's complicated, I'm actually taking notes this lesson has branched me out to learn new things so I can know what you're talking about, I appreciate this so much.❤
What I did was play along with Tom's bass isolated and started at quarter speed and worked my way up . Groove is in the heart and you should play a few bars of it like you were playing with the band . You kinda sounded like a bass bot.
The thing that has challenged me (still does) is the eighth note string skipping part where you skip the d string. For example if I play the whole thing an octave lower and use the open A string, it becomes do-able.
ARI always lays it down like a BOSS! What a great musician and teacher... lou gramm from foreigner was always waiting for a girl like you! ginger hair? ( perhaps that's true) All we know is he was entranced by her... and he gave such a great performance that night ... and by the end of the night nobody actually knew who she was or where she came from... but lou sang his heart out to her! and whether you are still around or still listening ( we really don't know..) But, ..wherever you are and whomever you may be! This song is for you! We love you ARI! You are such a great teacher and we all love you ! Don't think your efforts and hard work goes un-noticed ! This song is for you! : th-cam.com/video/4Rzpt1xqIsE/w-d-xo.html
I don't know man? Maybe for a beginner this is a difficult bass line? I never even actually sat down & "Learned" it. It's one of those songs you've heard it so many times, if you've been playing for a while, you have a good idea of what's being played. I think this bass line is also a great exercise for practicing.
A question about right hand technique: Do you rake from the upper notes to the lower notes even if it means crossing over a string i.e. use the same finger to pluck the high G and the lower A as well as use the same finger to pluck the octave A to the lower A?
Sean, I trained myself to put my RH on autopilot. Many advantages of not having to decide which finger to use. Alternate and it's done! That said there are certain applications (like triplet drops in walking for example) where raking sounds better I think.
I don't know if someone told you before. You don't face enough your neck bass to the camera and it's impossible to see exactly what you are playing. Your lesson is good for cutting into piece to better learn it. There is a lot of bad lesson and some good. Yours is in the good one. After a good pratice I'm playing it fluently now.
Um..I might be wrong..but I don't think you are playing it correctly:)..think bounce and an open string...that will be my only clue. And thank you for the great vids:)
Um..you are confusing syncopation with playing in time. She is helping the player understand the divisions not how to syncopate Hamiltons rhythm. Also, while done implicitly, she cleverly forces the player to pay attention to their fingering by insisting you practice the phrases by breaking longer notes into 16ths. Without stating it, you must play with the proper fingering to accomplish this. I hope this is helpful.
Tom normally plays this plucked. Although, I just found this video where he plays it with a pick, so apparently he’s done it both ways! But it’s definitely plucked more often. th-cam.com/video/XYpOuKK7IEw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HVZBZhWUQTyF5bTF
You sound like a robot playing this iconic bass line. there is so much more to this bass line than just plucking the notes. Try a slight pull off from the high G to the open G same with the high D to the open D. Playing without feeling is a bad habit.
I just find your original comment condescending, inaccurate, and probably inspired by an unexplored misogyny. While my comment may have been a bit on the harsh side, your reply to me is just more evidence of your mean spirit. Maybe you are young and will allow yourself to outgrow your mean and unnecessarily competitive approach to life. I am not deaf, and am endlessly qualified to make the judgement I did of this very fine, accurate, and generous bass lesson. I like the suggestion that you post your own transcription of this bass line. Would you be so vulnerable and generous to offer it? @@joelybarish4618

My band have recently decided to cover this track. Your tip to play 16th notes really helped the rhythm to pop out. Thank you

I am so glad that I'm not the only one having problems playing that riff. It looked easy on the first sight...

Excellent tutorial, you have great teaching techniques
Huge thank you for taking the time out to do this for everyone, helped me so much
We are getting ready to learn this song for a set. Perfect timing...thank you!
great lesson, I remember having some trouble playing it on gtr. thanks for sharing
This gave me the whole idea of the song . Thank you . You didn't do the rest of the song but with what you showed, is more than enough
You are welcome. It is a series on bass technique, so not focused on song learning. More like giving you tools for playing. Thanks for watching
Ariane Cap tools worked.. tks
@@rolandoriley Awesome :)
thank you you are one of the best teachers on youtube!
Great lesson. I have the notes down but this turns the notes into music.
nice lesson, you rock
Love this thank you
Thanks Ari, great lesson.
Thanks Ari great lesson cheers

Great lessons and instruction! Love it!
you're amazing in explaining this !! I think I finally have it lol
Thank you
I don't even play the bass and found this very interesting.
Yes, great tips, great teaching!
good lesson!
I love the bass you are using and the color. Which one is this bass

Lovely song! She may just be the muse who comes to all of your gigs.
ari... you r just super.....love you
Aaargh!!! The hard part for me is jumping over the D string without hitting it when consecutive notes are on the G and A string.
Ariane I love you!!!!

hola from Spain, do you can write or talk in spanish?, excuse me when I listen english dont understand,Tank you very much, gracias
I love you
I'm impressed.. how can you play a 5-string bass with such tiny hands!
where can I to buy your book?, I live in Spain, too, it is posible book in spanish?
very interesante

Is this part on your online course?
Actually ..way too much treble. LoL Very good technique and advice !!!
Did I say how much I love you

Cheers Scotty. It is correct. Check it here ad watch the fingers: th-cam.com/video/VdrApClMj-c/w-d-xo.html
DECADES?!? (DAMN!) LOL
Could use groove.
SMH. Sheech! Going back to Finbar’s tutorial.
I know Tom personally, he had know idea what the mixilodian scale was when he wrote this lick. Additionally your not playing correctly
I love watching Tom play , He's got so much swag ...they all do in that band . Lol
what about the verse and chorus?...the intro isn't hard if you have a good drummer.
really? a good drummer who has to shake a shaker consistently at 98bpm? LOL
This does sound quite right to me when I go back and listen to the record or live versions. Tom Hamilton's version is much looser.
I'm joking, of course.
You should listen to the song first.
Amazing lesson, thanks for sharing! If I may, you are truly a beautiful women.
LOL aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand never shows how to exactly play the riff through the whole video.
She's cute
Listen to the isolated track off Toys in the attic, this is all wrong Sorry lady
😷
I think the first thing you should have shown was what notes to hit. Without that this whole video is useless
Not really accurate rythmically unless played with a pick. Hard listening to the very close but not quite finger style version.
Rhythmic accuracy has nothing to do with whether it is pick played or finger style. Plus: see th-cam.com/video/33ClrPlzuVQ/w-d-xo.html
He played it with his fingers, and as I told Ari- the riff was written on a marimba and doubled on bass.
Ariane Cap lol you put this fool in his place
Tom normally plays this plucked. Although, I just found this video where he plays it with a pick, so apparently he’s done it both ways! But it’s definitely plucked more often.

I didn't know chicks played base.
you have great fingering technique but you are rhythmically wrong in playing the riff. Proving that using your ears is important as technique.
She's got it exactly right.
