THIS. This right here ladies and gents, is why he won the Golden Globe.
The raw emotion and power in his voice, the lovely piano, the beautiful storytelling that tugs at the heart, everything building up to this part was already phenomenal, but this scene easily steals the show for me. Just everything Andrew Garfield has done the whole movie is all so glorious and is what rightfully makes him so worthy of that award.
Hopefully this isn't the last time we see him in a movie musical and this is only the beginning for him. Perhaps an Oscar is in his future for this role as well? Only time will tell.

Andrew was robbed, straight up robbed of an Oscar for this song alone. I'm never gonna get over that. You can't tell me that the nominee that learned and outright mastered two new skills for his role AND acted his heart out didn't deserve to win. The Oscars need a category for musicals like the Golden Globes has, at least Andrew would have definitely gotten his due then.

My English is not very good, but I wanted to say that I agree with you, and every time I have the opportunity to express and imply that giving Wil Smith the Osacr was a robbery, I do it.
In 2019 the Oscar winner was Rami Malek, who learned to sing, to play the piano, he played an artist, practically the same as Andrew years later, for me it was inconsistent that one won and the other didn't, doing something similar and performing better than the other candidates.
I hope that in the future it will be recognized as it deserves.

Fun fact: They originally planned to film this with playback and Andrew Garfield lip-syncing, but when time came for shooting he felt that the emotional state Jonathan was in was different from what he delivered on the recording, so he sang this live at the Delacorte.
Also fun fact: They shot this in March, so when they started filming again under the new COVID protocols they weren't allowed to have spontaneous moments like that, because of the risks of spreading COVID while singing, so they were only allowed to pick certain moments for live singing. Lin-Manuel Miranda actually got yelled at by the COVID monitors when Garfield spontaneously sang during one of the first days back filming.

one thing that really broke me during this scene was the knowledge that his best friend lived longer than him, even when he might have believed it was the other way around. it felt like Jonathan Larson's final promise (and goodbye) before his own death. "I'm gonna spend my time this way" had no reason to hit this hard

This part made me cry, especially with the home movie mock footage of 9 year old/16 year old Michael and Jon. It’s heartbreaking to see them so young and with their whole lives ahead of them knowing what happened. It’s so bittersweet because Jon wrote this I believe as a tribute to those that were lost during the AIDS epidemic (which included a lot of people that Jon knew), and in this number he is reflecting on the fear of losing his best friend since childhood and the person whom Michael was based off of survived HIV/AIDS…others weren’t so lucky.

This song is so special. A friend of mine and I went to an event recently and got to witness Andrew speaking how much Jonathan Larson and this film mean to him, especially this song. They played this scene and we watched it together with him. Afterwards, he mentioned how he carried the grief he felt with his mother passing when he filmed this scene. With tears in his eyes he said to the audience “you all just met Lynn Garfield tonight”.
Andrew Garfield is such a special, humble, and talented human. I cannot thank the universe enough for him.

He also mentioned his mum, and it was very powerful for a lot of reasons.
      1. His brother and his father was in the audience at that time.
      2. Colbert himself lost a parent when he was young and it was clear he was affected by it.
      3. “I hope this grief stays with me”

Before watching this movie I never had interest in musicals, and had no knowledge of Jonathan Larson. But this movie, and this song in particular, brought out some serious emotions. "What a way to spend a day" is something that people need to take time and say to themselves more. Life is fleeting, and we need to take a moment from time to time and enjoy the people we hold dear.

I'm a former theatre kid who lost their dreams and a lot of their talent to trauma, eating disorders and depression. And this pandemic...like it did for everyone made things a lot worse. It's easy to forget what makes you happy when all you are trying to do is survive. But Jonathan...in the face of death..talking about the pure joy he felt doing something so ordinary as going to rehearsals, pouring his all into little community theatre productions, making connections with other loud, goofy, obnoxious and very loving theatre kids in an old dusty rehearsal space playing acting games and getting every part right...made me take stock of my own life. Looking through all of my embarrassments and failures I really had to ask myself "What times were I the happiest?" And when it came down to it...those times were all of the experiences that Jonathan shared in this song. Notice he didn't say "What a way to make money" or "What a way to become famous" he said "What a way to spend the day". Needless to say this song made me ugly cry in a way that I haven't in a really long time. That despite all the other crap there was still a part of me that knew what that joy was.
I hope all of us get to spend our days the way we wish. No matter how much life can make us lose sight of it.

andrew garfield is the perfect musical actor. it’s one thing perfectly sing emotionally in a song, but it’s a whole other thing to truly act and sing. the emotion is so raw and pure, that it adds imperfections to his vocal, which makes it even more perfect. he’s expressing his love and grief and pain about the threat of losing the most important person in his life, all through song. it shouldn’t be perfectly sung which a couple extra hard vocals. it should be expressed as purely as it is here. from his real crying while singing, messing up his breath control and nasal capabilities, to his conviction when he say “i make a vow…” rarely have i seen an actor express and capture emotion so well, on and off screen. the man is an artist through and through, and he’s even dealt with his own loss. he’s so connected to Jon, no one could’ve done it better.

Thank you so much for writing your comment. Not in a theatre craeer, but my passion is writing and I've felt so out of place whenever I saw people around me without any particular passions going on with their non artistic careers, without understanding what it's like to be divided between dreams and reality. Thankfully, I have a job now that allows me to explore my creativity and I can balance it with my writing, but the life of an artist can be a very difficult one. Glad to know you're in a better place, a big hug from Spain.

I think it's the line "what a way to spend the day". It doesn't matter if you make money or obtain fame from it. It matters that you spend as much time as you can doing what makes you happy. I feel like I'm past the point of trying to make money off of this. I'm doing the 9-5 thing but I'm lucky that I found a theatre group that meets outside of those hours. When I listened to this song and looked back at the few times in my life in which I was the happiest...really the happiest I realized "damn....those all took place at a theatre didn't they?"

Garfield is simply stunning in this movie. The premise of this story is oddly structured with a different narrative arc. So many things could have gone wrong with this. But Garfield deep-dives into his part and gives us a flesh and blood character that we can relate to...and makes the movie a cut above the usual fare. That he can sing (and how!) is fabulous. Hand him the Oscar already.

Andrew Garfield portrays brokenness and pain so real that it hurts. I really am in pain while I watch his movies - it feels like the soul of his characters is just on my screen, so fragile, so tender, so vulnerable. It might sound weird but I feel comfort in the fact that one must truly understand these feelings to portray them the way Andrew Garfield does: Even if no one of one’s family or friends know what it’s like to feel broken - there is an actor who must have felt it too to portray it this well. I don’t know if I’m just lost in my thoughts but maybe someone understands what I’m trying to say. Watching his movies feels like being heard and seen even on your darkest days.

This is reminding me of something I’ve wondered about:
The original version of this song, as sung by Jonathan Larson, is here on TH-cam-it’s worth watching. When he himself sang this song, he didn’t quote “Come to Your Senses.” He quoted “Liquid Crystal Digital Readout” instead - we heard a little of that song earlier in the movie, when Sondheim is reviewing “Superbia” at the workshop.
I wonder if Jonathan himself preferred “LCD Readout”? Or did it not occur to him to try putting in “Come to Your Senses” instead?
