Such fun, Kirsten - you must have been reading my mind, because I have just ordered a Pooki Press for linocuts. I am so excited! My video for Saturday is stamp carving, too. I love your collagraph, that second print with it is gorgeous!
I’ll be there…on time!!!! I seen this on sally hirst channel. I’ve seen a lot of pooki press on IG too, I never even thought of that!! Nothing beats the gel plate but I am intrigued by the other printmaking techniques.
@@quirkyqueens No rush Kirsten, it won't be a live this week, just a pre-recorded video (which I have yet to edit). Yes, I have been lusting after the Pooki for ages. Printmaking is great, I love how it produces lots of surprises!
You never cease to amaze me! The new print technique and use of the poster paints - very ingenious. I had some very , very old poster paints that were not usable that I just threw away. Will be checking out the Dollar Tree on my next visit (I like the way they print). Will continue to watch your progress and then maybe I’ll get brave enough to try it in my die cut/ embossing machine.
The poster paint is ideal at this beginning stage as it’s less messy and less work than actual proper ink. I’m not sure how far I’ll be able to go with it, but anything that streamlines the messy, time consuming, boring bits is my goal!!
Hi Kirsten 😍 You are always good for a surprise 🥳 Another way to enrich stash 🤣 I like the collograph print, but did never think to use my sizzix for this purpose. It has more depth than the gel print version in my opinion. Have a nice weekend, my dear 🥰, Britta
I agree!!! It’s just much sharper overall and the colour is less patchy. I am really happy to have found paint that’s not the ink as it’s very sticky. Obviously as I improve, I will need to use that, but anything that makes the process less laborious is a win to me. Have a lovely weekend too Britta 😘🥰
Great demonstration Kirsten -- I've been thinking about getting one for this purpose & you've brought me closer :) FYI one thing I've seen printmakers do is lightly dampen the paper receiving the print (though it's thicker/printmaking paper they use), might keep it from sticking -- thanks again ❤
Hi, that is brilliant to hear. Sally hirst has a few videos about pros and cons of different craft machines for this. Definitely worth a watch pre-purchase. It’s how I settled on the big shot plus. It’s all these little things like wetting the paper, cleaning the sides, that the pros do that I’m hoping to pick up along the way. Most of my progress comes from tips in comments!!! ❤️
Hi Carole, thank you!! It was a bit of a workout moving the big shot on and off the table. I have a little table I normally use for it, but I would’ve had to tidy up pre-video if I’d used that 😇😂 It’s more different to using the gel plate than I expected but once I get used to things like how much tension you should feel at the right pressure etc it’ll be much more fun too 😁
Wow!! I never thought of using my die cut machine like this! Will adding paint retarder to acrylic paint, or even Akua Inks, help it stay wetter longer for this? This was a fascinting demonstration Miss Kirsten! Hugs, DebC. ❤
Hi Miss Deb and valentine, Akua inks are the goal but I need to get more capable first due to the expense. I tried with the retarder but it made the paint a bit runnier and I was struggling to control it. I’m thinking if I used retarder and a thickening medium…maybe heavy gel medium actually…ooh I’m gonna try that!!! Hugs to you too ❤️
Hi Kirsten! Another fantastic video. I so enjoy watching your creative experiments. Isn't print making an endless discovery of joy? I've got it bad for all kinds of print techniques and it seems like you do too. Are you familiar with Ruth Ander (monotype) and Marta Dyer-Smith (collograph)? They're two artists I like, as well as Sally Hirst, who you mentioned... and you of course. 😀
Yes and yes…but I didn’t know their surnames!! Marta is where I learned a lot of the techniques and adapted to the gel plate!!! I’ve applied for a funded residency at a proper printmaking studio, I find out May. I expect they’ll want someone with formal qualifications but it would be amazing if they gave me a shot. I’d tell you everything!!! 😂🥰
@@quirkyqueens wow! That's big, Kirsten. I'm crossing my fingers you get the residency. I'm just coming off a virtual residency (it ended yesterday) and as part of my honorarium they paid my registration for Ruth Ander's print classes. Our print adventures continue!
Hi Nicola, the larger ones that said gouache(I’m not sure it is proper gouache) were in the kids art section in the range in UK. The smaller poster paint ones were from toy section in Morrisons supermarket in UK. I’m really loving them and will try using them with acrylics soon too x
Hi Reni. I will need to try that, also wetting the paper a bit too (when I use thicker paper). I agree, they are both different and similar. But they both bring different looks. So I think they could work very well together in the same picture 😁
Can you add Retarder to paint (like P does), or try inks??? If you haven't done Die Cutting or Embossing with your Big Shot, what have you used it for? I THINK I've seen somebody do something similar. 🤔 Lol. No memory here!!! I dont really know much about the printing "thing". But it seems there's potential here!!
I bought it to do this with Barbara, but I’m sure the odd die cut will be bought 😂 The retarder makes the acrylic ink just a bit runnier…and I’m messy enough with it. Maybe cheap acrylic paints might work though 🤔 Golden open is not an option in the UK…until I win the lottery 🥳
What a great idea. I bought a new sizzex and was going to get rid of the old one but now I'll keep it and try using it as a printing press. I've sent you a facebook message
Kirsten, I love your video and I enjoyed watching it! Thank you for sharing!🌹❤️
Hi penka, thank you…I’m really happy you watched it ❤️🌹❤️
Well done with your experimenting!
Hi Cheryl, thank you so much!! It’s a long road ahead but I’m very pleased I got full colour coverage. Baby steps 😂

Hi Sally, thank you so much for inspiring and commenting 😁😁😁
That was a good start. Especially in the small space. I look forward to many more experiments. 😊

Lots of fun, thank you Kirsten! I must get on to some more experimenting. Where did you get the paint from - I know you said it was cheap...? Nicola x

Very different results between the gel plate and the sizzix… nice try I think they rub the paint of with newsprint before printing🙃
