0:55 I think the part you should've mentioned as an answer to why ReactOS folks don't get sued is that two different people are involved in clean-room reverse engineering.
The first figures out how a Windows component works (reverse-engineering), and writes a specification (how the code should work), which *another* person implements in code. This is how it is *guaranteed* not to be a copyright violation, because the code writer hasn't seen any Windows code.
IMO, you didn't answer your question.

    • @Tedd755

Its really not that scary. I dove head first and dual booted my pc with Ubuntu about 3 months ago. its a great distro to get your feet wet and with a bit of reading/videos online you can easily learn basic terminal utilities and file systems. Not that it would be necessary, you can run ubuntu just fine without having to run something on terminal. The GNU desktop environment used on Ubuntu is a lot like android phones and it shouldnt take much of a difficulty to get used to. Linux, especially ubuntu is amazing for multitasking, distraction free, productive work environment. Just to be safe, you can always try it out before by running a virtual machine using vmware or virtual box or can dual boot it on your pc to use it alongside Windows. Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Arch linux have amazing community support. Virtually every problem youll ever encounter will probably already been discussed on the forums or you will get answers easily if you ask. Even if u tried and u didnt like it, the knowledge of linux that you gained will still be very valuable and applicable to things like web servers, android phones, macs, who all use versions of linux

I run ubuntu and fedora linux myself, but I ABSOLUETLY LOVE that you incluede hiaku os in this video. I grew up obsessed with computers and always wanted to go into software design, but my family felt that computers were a passing trend not worth getting into. I continued to learn c++, python, css, html, and js after highschool on my own. But a good friend of mine worked on Hiaku while attending RIT in the early 2000s. He also worked on the original Microsoft surface systems there. I remember him coming home from school and telling me about the features they wanted to incorporate and the capabilities of the system. When I first heard of microsoft surface, it was basically a computer built into a coffee table with a touch screen, some cameras to locate objects on its surface or touches from users, and gesture recognition over its surface. (My understanding is that there are some airports with this system in use today, and every time I hear about microsofts surface system, I get a small kick of excitement because I knew details about the system when microsoft was still developing it.). This video shook up some nostalgia for me and made me think of my old friends that I have not seen in many years.

BSD code is used in more places than one might think and you'd be surprised what the BSDs have given us over the years and nVidia still makes FreeBSD drivers. Temple OS was made by a man named Terry Davis who apparently God told by god to create an operating system, which he finished in 2005, It shares some similarities with DOS.
The OS had some *amazing features, such as 16 bit colour, a 640x480 resolution and even contained apps like a flight simulator and a compiler.
Unfortunately temple OS stopped getting updates on 2017 and Terry A. Davis later committed suicide in 2018.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Here we find the command interpreter (shell), window systems, compilers, editors, and similar application-independent programs. It is important to realize that these programs are definitely not part of the operating system, even though they are typically supplied preinstalled by the computer manufacturer, or in a package with the operating system if it is installed after purchase. This is a crucial, but subtle, point. The operating system is (usually) that portion of the software that runs in kernel mode or supervisor mode. It is protected from user tampering by the hardware ...”
-- Tanenbaum & Woodhull, _Operating Systems Design And Implementation_ , third edition, page 3

If you are a developer searching for a secure OS designed on L3/L4 microkernel research for your single board computer... you really need to get interested in Genode OS. Their toy SculptOS, is a ... about 25 Mb USB image, that is able to connect to Internet, show relations between components in a QT GUI, allows to install a tiny window manager, an open GL rotating thing... a small text editor... a small terminal (Noux)... that's about it. You will probably not be able to install these stuff without reading the documentation! F12 key toggle the GUI! Well... ideally for developers ready to learn about capabilities... but in a state ready to begin porting POSIX applications. Maybe it is worth to say that it support mostly just VESA and Intel display driver (i915).

But on modern (Can be a Linux OS other than something like Ubuntu or Pop OS) there's Elementary OS, Zorin OS and Android-x86.
And these are not the only OSes other than Windows, MacOS or various version of Linux like Ubuntu or Pop OS.

While not an x86- or AMD64-based OS, RISC OS is pretty interesting. I haven't used it, so I don't know what software is available for it, but I do have a Raspberry Pi Zero, so I'm considering trying it out one of these days. Given that it's likely that ARM is now the most common processor architecture used by consumers (rather than servers), RISC-based operating systems might be a worthwhile video to do, particularly since Apple is set to transition away from intel-based processors to ARM for all their laptop and desktop machines. It's pretty interesting that the majority of consumer devices run a processor architecture designed by a British company that likely would not have succeeded had the BBC not chosen their computer for the BBC Micro in 1981 (an incredibly interesting story in its own right).
