Gday, thanks for watching the videos, it’s really a simple cheap way to etch, I just wish I knew about this years ago, thanks again for watching mate, cheers
Thanks heaps, Matty. I've done a fair bit of etching sort of like you did here, using a wall-wart and cotton balls soaked in salt water over a vinyl stencil. Kept trying for a deep etch then paint spraying and sanding off the surplus. Got varying results; a quick zap would look nice but be too shallow, and a longer zap usually gave me edge bleed and blurring, although I got some beauties. Tried all sorts of ways to get the stencil to stick firmly at the edges. After watching you I'm thinking maybe slopping the salt water on was total overkill, and just keeping things damp would work best.... of course, the heat generated might be lifting the stencil too.... hmmm, experimenting time! Thanks again, Matty.
Gday, I found having to much moisture affected the edging as well, less is best I think with the stencils I use, if they get to wet they can tare easily and the finish isn't as sharp as it should be, please let me know how you get on, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
It's a lot nicer than the knife-dragging vinyl cutter way of making electro-etching masks, and way simpler than using printed circuit board film and UV. If the etch is deep enough you can use Elephant Black engraver's wax to get a decent contrast for decorative items. Some folks recommend putting a tiny dab of the electrolyte on the stencil before starting electro-etching, so it wicks underneath the tape and helps it to adhere better. I saw someone using a different stencil method two or three years ago to etch stainless but whatever they were using for electrolyte made the etched surface of the stainless almost black. Must see if I can find the video. Excellent demo, thanks Matty!
Gday, I did think about a vinyl cutter but with small text it would be hard to keep the letters correct meaning the inside of a O or A say, this way with stencil tape is definitely simple and can do down to 3.5mm high lettering, I have done stainless now and it worked great, im looking into what I can fill the lettering in after etching to make it stand out more as well, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers

Onya Matty 👏👏👏 Great video mate…. I just received a ‘plating manual’ from Janes Kits up at Newcastle. Your vid. had given me lots of tips on how I can expand the use of my power source 👍 Give me a week, and there won’t be a tool in the entire shop that hasn’t been ‘etched’. Lot simpler ( and better) than me hacking away with an engraver and shaky hands eh? Thanks again Matty, Regards Robert
Gday Robert, I’m glad this was a help, there’s not much I have left to etch here as well, simple, easy and effective, thanks very much for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Ciao Matty! That Is very interesting, some years ago i did something similar with vinegar and salt, 6 Volts battery, not good results! But now you have stimulated me again the desire to try! I would like to ask, what's in the blue container? Water only? Then I'm curious to know how stencils are made, that is, how does it penetrate the liquid only where there are writings? Sorry for the questions, but the method inspires me a lot! Thanks and a big ciao from Italy! Alberto
Gday Alberto, in the blue container is water mixed with table salt, add as much salt as you can, the stencils are made on a Brother P-touch P700 label maker, I use stencil tape, there’s links in the description where I brought mine from, if you shop around you’ll find this cheaper, it’s important to have the polarity correct, negative goes to the “wand” and positive to the work piece, I’ve tried voltage down to 3v and it still works but not as quick and voltage up to 24v, it etch’s quick then, please let me know how you get on, thanks for watching, cheers
Nice job my compliments!!!! I'll like to ask something .... If you need more DEEP etching you just change the voltage of the power supply unit??? If you have some free time instead of salt-water mixture can you use vinegar and tell us the results??? Best Regards from Hellas (Greece)
Gday, from what I’ve found so far if you want a deeper etch all I did was etched for longer, I’ve played around with the voltage up to 14v which made it a bit quicker, the longer you do it the more chance the stencil will fail and split, I found that out pretty quickly, I haven’t tried vinegar yet but I will, I hope this helps, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Gday Paul, the etch is deep enough I’d say to take paint, im going to play around with some cold blue and see if that works ok, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
That's bloody great Matty! So simple. My mum in law has a vinyl cutter , do you have to have a specific type of vinyl for this sort of job? And would that be self adhesive? Cheer mate, Sam
Gday, I’ve never use vinyl but people do, it works fine and being a sticker it would be a lot easier to straight, the stencil tape I use doesn’t come with a sticky back unfortunately, cheers
Thanks Matty. I have the Brother PTouch Cube and it does take the same tape cassette. Is the stencil not self adhesive like the normal labels? I saw that you can run over the stencil with a highlighter pen so you can see the lettering easily for aligning the lettering. Definitely going to try this.
Gday Preso, I did try the highlighter but it didn’t really go to plan, not sure what was going on there, it would be good if the they did have a sticky back, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Hey Matty, great video mate! I'll be trying this myself for sure. Slightly unrelated question - can't help noticing your shop made tools look mint. What are you using for corrosion protection? Here in the UK if I don't blue things up they go rusty pretty much over night. Tried lots of things but not found the perfect solution yet.
Gday, definitely give it a go, we live within a 4min walk to the beach, surprisingly we don’t have a big rust problem thankfully, everything you see in the cupboard has nothing in the way of rust protection, just close the door of a night and it’s all good, things like the rotary table, in the winter I sometimes spray a light film of CRC on WD40 and that’s it, most of our wind comes from the west and blows out to see, I’d say it would be a different story if the wind come from east, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Gday Jack, the stencil tape doesn’t have a sticker back unfortunately, I certainly wish it did, it would be even easier, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Hi Matty, Thanks for Posting this. I had no idea it was so easy. What kind of Tape or Ribbon do you use on the Brother P700? Is it the non Adhesive Backing? Also, does the P700 kinda Etch through the Paper so the Salt Water goes through only where the Letters are? I would love to be able to do this to the Things I make. Anyway, Thanks again Matty.👍
Gday, the tape is called “Stench tape”, it’s etch’s through the letter printed in the tape, it’s not sticky backed so you need to used masking tape to fix it to your job, there a one use stencil as well, super easy to do and works well, let me know how you get on, cheers
Thanks very much for sharing this. Have you tried this on Stainless Steel? Seems like it should work too. Much easier than I had expected. Thanks again Matty.
Gday Patrick, I haven’t as yet will will be shortly, I’d say it will work, aluminium works well, I’m thinking anything that’s conducive it will work on, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Very flash Matty 👍 I've thort about going down this path but I only use a single letter B so I just throw on a few coats of layout blue and scratch thru it with a fine pointer and then etch with a cotton bud, salt water or salted vinegar both work well. Not ideal tho cos my eyes are shit too 🤣 Would love to try this if you felt like sending me a couple of B's to test before I commit to spending money I don't really have. Cheers mate 🍺
Yep, scratching thru a resist is very old school, works well but a real pain if you fuck it up. I switched to layout blus coe nail polish tends to splinter , blue solves this but can sometimes react with the etching fluid. I really like the crisp lines this method gives. If you can't find my address I'll send an email. 🍺
Great job Matty. I've got a Brother p-touch and designed a label with my logo on. I must get some stencil tape ordered and give it a try. Cheers Andrew

Hi Maty, you sure do like to live dangerously. First you steal a new dish towel and then you call her the "old" girl. That would've got me banned to the wood shed for a week at least. For your sake I assume she's got used to it and at least allows the dog to accompany you.(to the wood shed). Thanks for the video. Apart from the ridiculous prices that printer companies charge for their cartridges, it looks to be a relatively easy and safe method of identifying your wares. One question I have is, is the etch deep enough to be able to spray paint it, wipe the excess off and have the etch more clearly defined. It's certainly very much safer than the acid etch that was used on an Estwing axe that was given to me as a trophy about sixty years ago. The steel is so hard that engraving tools wouldn't touch it. I believe either nitric or sulphuric acid was used. Regards from Canada's banana belt. 👍🍌🇨🇦🕊️🇺🇦🤞

@@Warped65er yep I got it now, I think that would work no worries at all…
Onya Matty 👏👏👏
Great video mate….
I just received a ‘plating manual’ from Janes Kits up at Newcastle. Your vid. had given me lots of tips on how I can expand the use of my power source 👍
Give me a week, and there won’t be a tool in the entire shop that hasn’t been ‘etched’.
Lot simpler ( and better) than me hacking away with an engraver and shaky hands
eh?
Thanks again Matty,
Regards
Robert
@@MattysWorkshop Thanks Matty i really want to try another time 😀
Nice job my compliments!!!!
What printer can do 3pt or 1mm size fonts on stencil tape ?
Cheers
magic are morris, will it take some paint or hard wax to stand out a bit more?
Great video Matty. Have you tried it on blued metal or is the blueing to protective for the salt to etch?
Gday, I haven’t tried in on anything that’s been blued yet, I’m not sure how it would go, I’ll have to give it a try mate, thanks for watching, cheers
Matty that is awesome. I wonder if it will work with a 9 volt battery or even a car battery. This is brilliant.
Gday Terry, yes it’ll work with a 9v and car battery no worries at all mate, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Cheers Matty, maybe I need to get myself a better cupboard! Keep up the good work, you're doing some great stuff.
Cooking with gas now Marty. Looks great! Does the stencil itself stick down?
I wonder if a large 6 volt battery would work?
Gday Mark, 6v battery will definitely work no worries at all, cheers
Gday Bill, I think stencils will be a lot quicker and easier, I’ll have to find your address again, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
send me an email Bill...
Do you have a product range?
Gday, sorry I don’t have a product range, cheers
Great job Matty. I've got a Brother p-touch and designed a label with my logo on. I must get some stencil tape ordered and give it a try.
Cheers
Andrew
Gday Andrew, I've been looking at these printers for a while and remembered you have one as well, Ive put a link in the descripition for the stencil tape, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Lol, done the same mi sen
Awesome stuff Matty. I have had your exact same thought processes over the past few years. I've been wanting to label my own work but haven't found a good easy and reliable, repeatable way of making this kind of etched labels. Did you use labels part number STe-151 ?
Gday Steve, yes thats the right stencil tape, I,ve also added a link in the description from where I got mine from, I hope this helps, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop My pleasure Matty, and thanks for sharing your knowledge, even if it’s not directly associated with machining. All info is potentially useful to us “machinists”. Often we’ve gotta think outside the box. 👍👍👍
👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks for watching, cheers
Mayyy you do great work glad to hear your med report... Check out red beard opps in the U.S he's a knife maker that made his own etching machine works great can turn the etch black. lots of good vids here cheers mate and be well
Hi Maty, you sure do like to live dangerously.
Gday Ron, the wife and I get along very well, you should hear what she calls me some days, scary, im going to try blueing the etch and rub the surface back on a sheet of glass with wet and dry, the etch is deep enough I believe, if I get it done soon I’ll put it in a future video as a quick update, see how I go mate, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
You really should post the product links to everything you are using. Trying to find the right stencil tape on amazon and everything is listed as stencil tape and I know its not the right stuff. And there are hundreds of listings to sort through.
Gday, I've just added the links in the description of the video, in had to learn how to do it, I hope this helps, Thanks for watching, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Awesome! Thanks. Going to get that printer and get set up.
Matty you've only had kids because it took too long to get the franger on your tackle haha
Yep bloody spot on, no cap tarp here mate
That's great! Excellent tip for small home shop labeling. Thanks for the look and idea.
Gday John, this is a very simple effective and affordable way to etch in the homeshop, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Great video matty, keep'um coming..
