I saw some Britannias on the GEML on a daily basis, but that was over sixty years ago . . .
Yes I had forgotten this was its old stomping ground. I grew up in near Salisbury, Wiltshire so it was a diet of Castles, Manors , Bullieds and Schools for me.
The Britannia’s were the most powerful BR 4-6-2s but diesel loco as to attend as a safety measure.
71000 Duke of Gloucester was far more powerful than a Britannia, even though it was not as free-steaming. 'Tis now though.
They were powerful but always stopped at Shenfield on their way to Norwich, during that stop they always took on water after the climb up Brentwood Bank.
Great video Paul, thanks. Can you or anyone else please explain why a bloody diesel loco is always added to the rear. Surely a loco like Britania is more than capable of hauling a rake of twelve coaches without assistance, it must add tons to the load.
For stock positioning and running air con etc. No turntables left so the steam engines have to use triangles to turn.
I can’t remember which company it was, Vintage Trains perhaps, who ran Christmas specials with a steam loco at each end. No diesels for those trips!!
A number of reasons, Heating, Air Con, Positioning moves on triangles where the train needs turning (very few turntables available now,) and reserve drive capability in emergencies (loco failure or stalling) when needed. Some trains with older stock run without diesel support in the summer where no support turning is required on less challenging and Quiter routes.
Well a Class 47 weighs in at 117 tons, so that adds the weight of another 3 carriages approximately if you think about it, thats quite a heavy load to pull !
