Thanks for this. One of my earliest memories is of me and my dad sitting in the car on the road just north of Horton in Ribblesdale and watching one of those anhydrite trains going south - that would have been 1966 or 67.
Absolutely fabulous 9F's in their real working clothes. Having farmed at Great Salkeld which is across the Eden valley from the S and C, I was a frequent visitor to Ais Gill and Ribblehead. Those were the days!!
Cheers for posting this - I know Hellifield pretty well, as I have relatives who live there and I made a a number of trips up to the station in my younger days to watch the trains whilst my late Grandad was sorting out the gardens at my folks' shop and house in the village. Sadly the shed and several sidings had gone by then, though there was still goods traffic on the "lanky" line down to Clitheroe & Blackburn and Hellifield South box was kept busy.
4:40, Hellifield shed after closure was used for long-term storage of around 12 of the National Collection of locomotives, such as the M.R. 4-2-2 Spinner" Crab 42700, EMU M28249M and a Kirtley 0-6-0
I well remember Hellifield in the 1960's but at this distance in time it is distressing to see the sheer neglect of steam locomotives. Perhaps in those days we simply accepted it!
Travelled from Blackburn to Hellifield many a time in early 60's. The highlight had to be the "Thames Clyde" and the 'Waverley' steam hauled in those days. Thank you for posting
Happy memories of my Leeds-Glasgow train commuting in 1978. Always remember the guy walking down the side of the train at Carlisle tapping each wheel with a hammer on the Sunday 19.30 return. The 16.10 from Glasgow on Friday was like a private club in the buffet car. Same group of us all with our 8 cans of Tennants lager carry-on. #goodolddays
Thanks for posting this video my Nearest stations are Clitheroe, Whalley, Langho, Ramsgreave and Wilpshire, Blackburn and Preston Sometimes I do go upto Hellifield and Further on but not that Far Also could you do a 1960s video about the trains at Tunnel tops and the old platform at Wilpshire and Wilpshire cutting please 🙏 P.S. I have liked and subscribed bye for now Philip
Fantastic cafe now on the station platform. Passenger services in the guise of DalesRail used the Blackburn - Hellifield route with 4 trains on a Sunday only. This service was stopped by Northern in late 2023. Although the service had been suffering abrupt cancellations for some time before this, engineering this eventual ceasing of the service. For a couple of years this service also ran over the winter to link again with the S&C without Rambling Guides at selected stations on the S&C. Although the true reason maybe just that using this service from Preston for example made a Sunday Trip up the S&C with lunch at Carlisle and in winter a bit of snow spotting all for the cost of approx £20 with a railcard. Odd that or am I just cynical. The people of the area are lobbying for a link to Skipton / Leeds by reinstating this route along with opening of the stations beyond Clitheroe its there already.

They did a marvelous restoration job on Hellifield Station in the 90's. Before that, it had got into a really dilapidated state!!
