I had the great honor to have a sifu who trained under Ip Chun. He told me that Wing Chun (that's just one of the many westernized spellings of the martial art) was never designed for sport or contests. It was always a form of self defense. The first lesson he always started off in his trainings was:"Never fight if you can deescalate. Never fight if you can run away. But if you have to fight to defend yourself be certain to take out your opponent as quickly and decisively as possible." Wing Chun focuses on weak points like joints, throat, eyes, nerve endings, genitals, neuralgic spots. It doesn't fight fair. If there is an opening you can feel in the defense or an offense, use it. If you can make certain an opponent who truly threatens you is taken out of a fight, don't hold back for misplaced fairness. Break or dislocate joints, especially knees and ankles, or elbows if given the opportunity. Many martial artists claim Wing Chun doesn't work in sporting contests, and that is true to a degree. When you are trained to feel the direction or force an opponent uses against you, to misdirect that direction by just enough, and to use that opening for the most vicious counterattack by pure reaction or muscle memory, not by thinking about it, you often can't stop such a counter to the weak points.
The main issue wing Chun has in the sport world is lack of spar training. And/or cross training with other styles. Ex: wrestling and jujitsu interact semi-often, boxing vs kickboxing, boxing vs wrestling. Wingchun doesn't really interact and when they do, they get pummeled almost all the time. Only attacks in mma not allowed or eyes, groin, biting. Joint attacks and breaking is legal.
During the scene where he dismantles all those Black Belts, all I could think of was "Limb doesn't bend that way. Limb doesn't bend that way! OHH NOW IT DOES!"
For extra context about the "feather" vs the sword, the duster is commonly used by Chinese parents to discipline their children. So the smack to the bottom was like Yip Man disciplining him. And yes, it hurts!
@@davidw.2791And American parents who (used to use) the switch...that you had to go pick yourself...or the strap. Schools used to have a paddle. A broad wooden paddle. It was usually called The Board of Education. They should make all of those great again
@@LA_HA Agreed. No offense but Gen Z kids are WAYYYYYY underdisciplined and lacking of work ethics and certain manners. Spanking and disciplining and shaming should return. We're not even allowed to allow "hurt feelings" exist at all anymore. You can only say "yes", you can never say "no" to anything. This is why I grew out of liberalism and back to my parents' style. They told me they spanked me because they loved me, not because they hated me. They discipline and teach me things about the world because no one in this world will do that for me, and because the real world out there is far more cruel. They were right. No one cares more about you than family. Friends can only help so much, but good stable family is ALWAYS there to help you through thick and thin forever, not just a couple times like friends do.
Finally guys. I recommend all the Ip Man Saga. 2, 3, the spin-off Master Z and 4, the final chapter. I think you gonna love it. A hello from Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷
As mentioned in the film, Ip Man's fighting style is Wing Chun. It is said to be created by two women, Ng Mui and Yim Wing Chun. According to legend, a warlord wanted to marry Yim Wing Chun, but she refused and instead challenged him to a duel. She came across Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun whom she asked for help. Together they created the art of Wing Chun, which the nun named after Yim Wing Chun. Wing Chun won the fight.
Foshan was the birthplace of the most famous version of Yongchun today. In Foshan, the style was mostly practiced by the children of wealthy merchants, as their parents could afford the high tuition fees and they had plenty of time to train. The most famous of them today, Ye Wen (Yip Man in Cantonese), studied the style with Chen Huashun, Wu Zhongsu and Liang Bi (Liang Zan's son). In 1949, he settled permanently in Hong Kong, where he began teaching Yongchun to members of the restaurant workers' union. Before his death in 1972, he trained a great number of today's famous masters and fighters. Ye Wen brought fame to the style, but this fame was not always established by worthy methods. There are many known cases of Ye Wen's students coming to other Hong Kong kungfu clubs and beating up the teachers. Currently, there are many Wing Chun sections in Hong Kong, where Yip Man's students teach, as well as representatives of other Wing Chun branches. For this reason, Wing Chun is not included in the register of martial arts. The Vietnamese branch of Wing Chun Kuen began in 1939 with Ruan Jiyun (Nguyen Te Kong), a legendary Chinese master who came to Hanoi at the invitation of the Association of Chinese Immigrants in Vietnam and who brought to life the principle of Chinese martial art, which states: "four liangs to overcome a thousand jins", which means: "a weak effort neutralizes an attack."
Speaking of which: check out Wing Chun (1994), starring Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen! An often overlooked classic, choreographed and directed by Yuen Woo Ping.
The long pole that he used to fight off the attackers in the factory is a traditional Wing Chun weapon. Well, technically the traditional weapon is not made from bamboo but it served the same purpose in this scene.
This movie is such an amazing movie that brings about a provocative story when I initially saw it back then. Donnie Yen really cemented himself well, alongside the other actors. The choreography and performances are phenomenal!
Hard to believe that this iconic martial art franchise started 16 years ago and launched Donnie Yen straight into fame for Western audience. The film is based on the life story of Yip Man, the first person to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun and Bruce Lee's trainer.
"The Grandmaster" (2013), is also another movie on Ip Man. Stars Tony Leung (plays The Mandarin in Shang Chi), and Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). Also directed by legendary director Wong Kar Wai (who always works with Tony Leung).

I am one of those legacy students of Ip Man. I was taught by Sigung Pete Pajil who was taught by Grandmaster Moy Yat. Moy Yat was taught by Ip Man. I met Grandmaster Moy Yat shorty before his death in 2001. I have always been honored to be a part of this lineage. Although I have not practiced the "Kung Fu Life" for many years, there are lessons one never forgets.
Oh, it's Ip (Yip), never "I. P." It's the master's family name ... translated from the character 葉 (leaf). "Man" is 問 (ask). Wing Chun is 詠春,supposed be the lady's first name, the one who created the original style of this martial arts, together with help from a Shaolin monk ... at least, that's how the legend was told in one version. There's a move in Wing Chun style, called "問手" (asking hand) or "問路手" (ask for direction hand) ... so, when Ip Man does it, I enjoy the double meaning! 😅 😁👍 Easily, I vote for continuing with watching Ip Man #2 and #3 ... the three movies made up a full journey story (e.g., don't you want to know how Bruce Lee comes into Ip Man's life?). I think, #4 did not have quality editing in some parts, and some dialogs get a bit extreme. For me, overall, #4 was a good movie though, but may not be for everyone. BUT ... what is interesting now is ... after many years, they are making movie #5 for Ip Man, it's being made ... with Donnie Yen‼ 😉
24:44 Fun fact: The actor getting smacked in the face also would go on to play as Ip Man in another film that was set as an origin story and depicted him growing up as a young adult before he became a master of Wing Chun. It's called The Legend is Born: Ip Man (2010). 24:55 Also, knowing how to defend yourself is one thing, but if you haven't practiced enough or experienced getting hurt or actual fighting, then you won't last long in a fight. The mill workers all had the basics down but against seasoned and experienced fighters, it was only a matter of time before they would get overpowered. So Ip Man stepped in and ended it immediately.
29:58 - And to think, ALL of the Ip Man movies are fantastic! I would say no one is better than the next. Each film holds it's own as a major epic martial arts film. Truly one of the best series in the genre ever made.

Legendary fight scenes❕ Donnie Yen's real life kids re-enacted one of Donnie's famous fight scenes (it's from the SPL movie), in the same street alley setting as per the movie fight scene, as a birthday video gift for Donnie recently! 😉👍
In reality, after the 2nd Sino-Japanese War, there was a Chinese Civil War between the Communist Party and the Kuomantang. The Communists won (1949) and Ip Man belonged to the Kuomantang party so he and his wife and daughters moved to Hong Kong. In 1951 his wife (Cheun Wing-Sing) and eldest daughter had to return to Fo Shan for IDs but the border was closed before they could get back to Hong Kong. Ip Man and Wing-Sing never saw each other again and she died in 1960 from cancer. Ip Man's sons rejoined him in Hong Kong in 1962.
You should keep going down the Ip Man rabbit hole. There are 4 of them I think and then there’s another movie that’s like a spiritual successor to Ip Man but the name of that one escapes me at the moment
Ip Man vs 10 black belts is not only an iconic fight scene but it also showcases some powerful details. The way it's portrayed, the emotions of losing someone he considered a friend, starving and the suffering he endured resulted in him fighting at his strongest ever. This Ip Man makes you afraid. What you feel from that scene is unparalleled. It's heartbreaking too because when he tells his wife later that he was useless, it was because with all of his strength and power after wiping the entire floor with those 10 black belts, he was powerless to help his fallen friend.
Fearless is also another beautiful historical film about a selfless martial arts master. Absolutely beautiful, both Ip Man and Huo Yuanjia are magnificent characters.
I hope you guys watch all of the IP man series. In particular, I love your commentaries as they are really insightful and fun. You guys set the bar so high when it comes to film reactions; amazing.
Watch them all. Also, there are several other films and TV shows about Master Ip, and they are all fantastic. There's even a spinoff movie about a character he defeats in one of the main movies who completely loses all self-confidence after Ip Man destroys him.
Foshan's population is 9 milion people now. The cotton mill is not there any more but hundreds of cotton factories are there in its place. And in the nearby Guangzhou city (20 mln.) you can find the biggest cloth market in the world. Still full of Kungfu masters there. I am going there tomorrow to practice. And purchase cloth. Welcome!
I have a birthday video from Donnie Yen when my friend living in London saw him at a restaurant & explained I was a also a huge fan from home. He's a real-life humble regular person.
The thing I find cool about wing chun is the type of punches and parries that comes with it! (Also I haven’t trained in it yet so there’s probably a bunch of other cool moves that are in wing chun as well!)
Since you guys loved this movie, for your next foray in martial arts movies, I suggest Jet Li's Fearless. It is also based on a real life person, Huo Yuanjia, who is famous for challenging outsiders and fighting in publicized events. Personally, Fearless is my favorite Jet Li movie, as it showcases a wide array of styles he has mastered irl.
21:35 When Li/Translator said "I am a Chinese Man", he was saying it in Japanese, which carries more weight in this scene. There's a few Ip Man movies out there that does not star Donnie Yen, and I do recommend watching those too. If you're interested in WuShu drama (Martial arts) that are usually set in feudal or ancient days of China, I recommend Legendary Heroes or Legend of the Condor Heroes. One of my personal faves is Laughing in the Wind from 2001 (Xiao Ao Jiang Hu) which has VERY VERY beautiful music and choreography and SCENERY, as well as GREAT cast, storytelling and acting.
Greatly enjoyed watching this with you! I myself could NOT truly recommend all the sequels afterward unless you just like to see action scenes and enjoy Donnie Yen's acting because it really becomes just total fiction with very little basis in reality, whereas THIS film was basically 90% accurate and a great report of history. Ip Man was the Grand Master of Wing Chun who was renowned for his great combat skills and his leadership. Regarding one of his most famous pupils, Bruce Lee, he was the only one who was able to convince Ip Man to perform his WC forms in front of a camera and Bruce recorded it for posterity (you can view that footage on TH-cam). And Lee himself was put on camera so we got REALLY lucky on that because Bruce Lee was able to actually sneak in a few movies at the very last 1.5 year of his life. Prior to that...there are zero movies, he was simply a veteran at live combat. In live situations Lee had fought; Black Belts, Pro Fighters, Ex military, Champions, 3rd degree Masters, Rival Martial Artists, and opponents that outweighed him by 100 pounds. His battle experience started in his teenhood as the leader of the Hong Kong gang known as the Tigers 8 of Junction Street and the violence had lead all the way to adulthood. The few movies he DID get to make were only at the last 1.5 years of his life which was a brief opportunity for him to report his life experiences and share to the world his insights into live combat. He only made 3 little movies plus One Hollywood film, a very short attempt at films but we're lucky he at least made them just before he died to show us his insights on his life of hard combat. Beckett Media has ranked Bruce Lee in the Top 50 Greatest Athletes of All Time, as he was able to raise unbelievable weights that pro weight lifters could not. We owe a great debt to Ip Man for producing one of his most superhuman students.
First two times I saw Donnie Yen over 2 decades ago now, he was playing bad ass villains in Hollywood movies, funny it later turned out, I liked him so much better as a good guy, the grace and quiet charisma just get you on his side effortlessly, he's always fun to watch. Yes to more Yen, please.
Enter The Fat Dragon is Donnie's latest movie from 2024, it's a comedy that spoofs his other roles but my favourite Donnie Yen movie is Special ID from 2013.
Ip Man trained Ip Chun, Ip Chun trained Kevin Chan (Ip Chun's trained a lot of people. He's 100 years old and still active), Kevin Chan trained me. There's lots of other great martial arts films if you guys ever decide to do more than dip your toe. There's some older Wing Chun movies also - Wing Chun (which I believe has a young Donnie Yuen in it), Warriors Two (not a sequel) and The Prodigal Son with Yuen Biao who you may recognise from Jackie Chan movies. Jet Li has done a lot of great stuff. If you want something modern try Kiss of the Dragon. Fushan is a famous Kung Fu town - most notably for Wong Fei Hong. There's over 100 movies about him, some of the best ones have Jet Li starring.
I have been watching Martial arts since I was a kid in the 80s. You guys seem like fans in the making. I am excited for you because you may end up watching all movies for the first time. I am jealous. Definitely watch the others.
I think there was a mis-translation of when the kid interrupted the fight. I think it should have been, "Mommy said if you DON'T start fighting, everything in the house will be broken."
Just to understand who Donnie yen is. Donnie Yen is proficient in many martial arts and combat disciplines; including: Wing Chun Boxing Kickboxing Jeet Kune Do Hapkido Mixed martial arts Taekwondo Karate Muay Thai Wrestling Brazilian jiu-jitsu Yen learned martial arts from his mother, Bow-sim Mark, who was a Tai Chi grandmaster, when he was nine years old.
IMO the best movie in your martial arts poll apart from Ip Man is Fearless (2006). It's a Jet Li film. Similar in tone to Ip Man. Make sure you watch the director's cut. It's very different from the theatrical, where the editing was rushed.
Oh, if you have a chance definitely watch the 2nd! One of the coolest fight scene in it (on the table) vs "the most badass chubby guy" in the history of movies, Sammo Hung who - despite his age - is still awesome...
Ip Man 2 is also great, but possibly even more infuriating in the unfairness of the fights Ip is forced into, but I guess that makes it all the better of a movie if it makes you feel that rage! You guys will LOVE Jet Li's Hero!
Caning from feather duster hurts as hell but Imagine it also has an upgraded version. Singapore’s Judicial caning is the MORE evolved form of caning compared to the feather duster. An American man called Micheal Fay can attest to that. 😅
It's never on anybody's list, but whenever people discover Donnie Yen, I always recommend "Sha Po Lang." (Also known as "SPL", or "Kill Zone".)It's a far cry from the traditional balletic martial arts movies, and Donnie leans more toward MMA, but the fight scenes are no less astonishing, and storytelling is top notch as well!
A true documentary that's free on TH-cam. Everyone should see it once in their life. Get 3 boxes of tissues. "dear zachary, a letter to a son about his father."
There's a lot of translation issues here. Specially this part 12:31 when his kid came out and tells him about what the wive said. The correct translation should be: "papa, if you keep being on the defensive, everything in the house will be broken." Or literal translation would be "papa if you dont start fighting back, everything in the house will be broken."
Now that you've done this one, you have to do the next three Ip Man movies with Donnie Yen. Master Z is a good spin off but comes after Ip Man 2 or 3 I think.
I recommend you to watch "Ong-Bak" film. It's a martial arts movie from Thailand. It's about Muay Thai(Thai Boxing). Absolutely fun and outstanding. Hope you enjoyed that.
How can Fearless poll so low , it's mindboggling , it truly is one of the best martial arts movies ever ... And the guy in Fearless i believe was connected with IP Man's master. I believe they both founded martial art schools around the same time and knew each other quite well.
Ip Man's eldest son Ip Chun is still alive living in Hong Kong, he recently turned 100 years old...

Yes, When Ip Man worked glasses dude up I cheered. He had it coming the whole movie.
Welcome back! 🎉 You've fought the good fight I see 💪🏿
Sees this pop up… 2 words. HELL YEA
Growing up in a chinese household once the parents busted out the feather duster you were gettin your ass whooped!
Donnie was in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny, he played Silent Wolf.
The thing I find cool about wing chun is the type of punches and parries that comes with it! (Also I haven’t trained in it yet so there’s probably a bunch of other cool moves that are in wing chun as well!)
Yeah Bong Sao is your go-to block. It's awesome.
Highly recommend the Stephen Chow martial arts comedy Film “Kung Fu Hustle”.
Awesome choreography and storyline.
Great reaction, really appreciate it!❤
Hey guys thank you for this..I absolutely love this franchise...look forward to watching the rest of them with you if you choose to!
39:39 Reaction videos always seem to hate on the captain/translator but you guys really got the right perspective.
Thanks guys modern classic
lmao, i saw all 3 of the ip man movies just 3 days ago and just now this video came up, fantastic :D
There were four IP MAN Movies with Donnie Yen, not only three... 😉
You know Ip Man means business when the sleeves are rolled up!
Oh, cool! Ip Man and Donnie Yen are great! ♥
And you trained my cat, and my cat trained me!
Yes! I was waiting for this!
Great movie. Donnie Yen is a great martial artist
Donnie Yen is a great action star and a incredible martial artist Flashpoint is another awesome Donnie Yen film highly recommend to check that out
Quite partial to dragon tiger gate, flashpoint is awesome too
One of my favorite martial arts movies ever.
Love this movie Ty for the reaction! I recommend trying Jet Li in Fearless.
Just to understand who Donnie yen is.
Donnie Yen is proficient in many martial arts and combat disciplines; including:
Wing Chun
Boxing
Kickboxing
Jeet Kune Do
Hapkido
Mixed martial arts
Taekwondo
Karate
Muay Thai
Wrestling
Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Yen learned martial arts from his mother, Bow-sim Mark, who was a Tai Chi grandmaster, when he was nine years old.
IMO the best movie in your martial arts poll apart from Ip Man is Fearless (2006).
It's a Jet Li film. Similar in tone to Ip Man.
Make sure you watch the director's cut. It's very different from the theatrical, where the editing was rushed.
Recently, Donnie Yen was in "Rogue One" and "John Wick 4."
Definitely have to watch Ip Man 2.. 3 & 4 was ok
Oh, if you have a chance definitely watch the 2nd!
One of the coolest fight scene in it (on the table) vs "the most badass chubby guy" in the history of movies, Sammo Hung who - despite his age - is still awesome...
Warrior isn’t a martial arts movie…it’s way more of a family drama with mma in it but it’s a hell of movie too to bottom.
Great reactions yo, now prepare yourself for uncle Zian from kickboxer and no introduction necessary for chuck Norris as lone wolf Mcuade
TBR and Samantha do Donnie Yen! Have Fun! Now you will find out why they pick him for John Wick and Rogue One! Super Thanks!
You have beaten TH-cam guy !!! Congratulations 💪
A true documentary that's free on TH-cam. Everyone should see it once in their life. Get 3 boxes of tissues. "dear zachary, a letter to a son about his father."
There's a lot of translation issues here. Specially this part 12:31 when his kid came out and tells him about what the wive said. The correct translation should be:
"papa, if you keep being on the defensive, everything in the house will be broken."
Or literal translation would be "papa if you dont start fighting back, everything in the house will be broken."
AWESOME!!
I'm about to watch you now :D
@TBR Schmitt Ip Man ( aka Yip Man) Taught Wing Chun to several Students, his most famous student was Bruce Lee
'Ip Man 2' please
I love this movie. Would be cool if you could watch Fearless or Danny The Dog (Unleashed in the US I think) with Jet Li. Both great movies
IP MAN is a legend, I'm surprised he didn't do move over to Holly like Bruce Lee.His skills deserved wider movie exposure.🤣
Guys you need to watch Jet Li movie Unleashed you won't regret it it's amazing.
Great movie and reactions.. I watched over and over at times..actions underrated
Ip Man, Bruce Lee's teacher, played by Donny Yen, great movie, great martial artist.
Glad you both are back
Now that you've done this one, you have to do the next three Ip Man movies with Donnie Yen. Master Z is a good spin off but comes after Ip Man 2 or 3 I think.
I recommend way of the dragon, a Bruce Lee movie. Also if you want to do more foreign films I recommend 13 assassins (2010)
One of my facility favorite movies ever.
Great movie series. Hope the others are on the list.
I recommend you to watch "Ong-Bak" film. It's a martial arts movie from Thailand. It's about Muay Thai(Thai Boxing). Absolutely fun and outstanding. Hope you enjoyed that.
All
Of these are cool, but the REAL gem is "Grandmasters" !! That movie is like all of it crystallized into peak modern day Kung Fu 🐉⛩️👊🏻
How can Fearless poll so low , it's mindboggling , it truly is one of the best martial arts movies ever ... And the guy in Fearless i believe was connected with IP Man's master. I believe they both founded martial art schools around the same time and knew each other quite well.
The New generation sadly😢
20:04 the best part of the movie Imo
This series of Ip Man has 4 films.
I enjoyed 2 and 3. Haven't seen 4 yet. But I like the 1st film the most.
Donnie Yen has been in Blade 2, John Wick 4 and Star Wars-Rogue One among others
Best ip man movie. The fighting is so amazing.
