When Graeme Souness was appointed Rangers manager in 1986, he was asked if the club's long-standing, unwritten policy of not signing openly Catholic players would be broken under his leadership. He promised that it would. Three years later, he signed Mo Johnston from under the noses of Celtic, achieving the feat of upsetting both sides of a divided football city.

I remember watching no at partick thistle in the late 1970s. He was a great player when young.
"Jock, if there were two players, one Catholic and one Protestant. Who would you sign?"
"The Protestant"
"Why?"
"Because I know that Rangers would never sign the Catholic."
Jock Stein's dig on winding up Rangers FC over their bigoted signing policies
That's basically the reason why Celtic were so dominant in the 60's and early 70's. It wasn't until they had aspirations of winning Europe in the late 80's early 90's when they decided to abandon these polices.
Jock Stein was rejected as Celtic manager the first time round as he was Protestant, it is well documented Stein left the chairman’s office in tears.
Celtic fans also showered Mark Walters (features in this video) with bananas in his first Old Firm game.
Celtic have a bigoted history too. Let’s not forget that.
Bloody shame the celtic board never invited Protestant Jock Stein to the all Roman Catholic board. Especially when they never shut up about him winning the EC for celtic . Hypocrisy at its best!
@@Mitjitsu
Sorry but you're basically wrong :
Rangers won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972 after being losing finalists twice, in 1961 (the first British club to reach a UEFA tournament final) and 1967. A third runners-up finish in Europe came in the UEFA Cup in 2008. Doesn't really work in with your theory.
a country of 82% protestant people makes it difficult to only sign catholics
Sir Alex Ferguson used to play for Rangers (the club he supported as a boy) but effectively sacked him because he was a Catholic in a protestant club. When he went into management with Aberdeen, he got a tiny club who trained in their car park to the top of the Scottish Premier League with the sole motivation of beating Rangers and got Aberdeen a European Cup Winners' Cup beating behemoths like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid and then he got the job at Man United and the rest is history. 🔴👹🔱
his wife is catholic which Rangers knew when they signed him , he was used as a scapegoat for a 4 nil defeat to celtic in a scottish cup final thats why he as sold
I've never heard that story, what a man
He was a prod was he not
@@andrewjohnston2850Correct. Billy McNeill out jumped a flat footed Alex Ferguson at a corner and scored the first goal in a 4-0 win for Celtic and Ferguson was blamed for the defeat by the Rangers board. Alex Ferguson is a Protestant and his wife was Catholic which didn't go down well with some higher up in the club and probably used that defeat as an excuse to get rid of him.

The first black player to sign for Rangers wasn’t Mark Walters, it was Walter Tull in 1917.
It took Celtic over 3 decades later to eventually sign their first black player, Gil Heron in 1951.

Pretty disgusting signing policy. Can't believe it only ended less than 30 years ago! Can't even believe it was even allowed to happen in the first place.
Welcome to central Scotland. When I worked on building sites there was a lot of tradesmen in the Masonic lodge. It wasn't all that long ago where Masons would make sure their sons got all the apprenticeships so if you had been to a catholic high school it was difficult to obtain an apprenticeship because of a lot of Masons' kids getting the placements. These days you have to sit an intelligence test for a lot of the trade apprenticeships so the place now go to the best candidates. RBS used to refuse to hire Catholics as did the Sunday Post newspaper. Sad thing is that it's been well documented for decades that in exam results Catholic high schools out perform non denominational (Hun) high schools.
Only in 2001 it became outlawed to refuse someone a job based on their religion in Scotland
Emperor Reign you need to visit Belfast or Glasgow to understand, to an outsider it might seem crazy but it makes complete sense if you’ve lived in it. The surprising fact is actually how many catholic and Protestant players have now played for each others team (and why the players even want to). Sectarianism is still a huge problem, those 2 clubs are the image of it.
@@whosthis7216 the clubs are a reflection of their fans. What evil cometh from these people.
It was bigoted and archaic but similar polices still exist today. Chivas will only sign Mexican-born players and Bilbao have a 'Basques only' unwritten rule in place. Of course Rangers already had John Spencer breaking through when MoJo signed but it was certainly a watershed moment and was beneficial for everyone, except Celtic.
Fact is he's remembered fondly at Ibrox and will always be welcome back.

It'd be really cool if you could make a video dedicated to the rivalry between Rangers and Celtic. I love the rich history in the game and as one of the most historic and bitter rivalries in the sport I'd be extremely interested in seeing that video or video series.
Also just a rivalries and derbies of football would be a great series.
Walter Tull was the first black player to sign for Rangers. Sadly he never played a game as he was one of the last people killed in WWI.
Great video this was also a Fantastic history lesson for me never knew a player's religion was so important to clubs thought it all came down to his skill and abilities
Fantastic video as always! You should do more videos about The great Scottish teams of the past!
I knew this was going to be brilliant even before I started watching. I remember when it all happened the first time around, BBC Scotland's "Scotland's Game" series also explained and portrayed it well, but this channel is unique in the way it combines visuals with facts. Bravo uMAXit, as always.
Oh, and Souness had nuts the size of Jupiter. Winning the Turkish Cup for Gala at Fener's ground and sticking the Gala flag in Fener's centre circle like Ulubatli Hasan only confirmed this.
Sooniss was a shit manager and got found out where he didn't have unlimited money. He won fuck all at Sampdoria, Benfica, Liverpool, Blackburn. I think Rangers is about the only management position he didn't get sacked from.
trip2themoon For a club the size of Blackburn Rovers, he was actually fairly successful. He got promoted from Division One, established Rovers in the Premier League and won the Worthington (League) Cup. Admittedly, he did have money to spend but it was comparable to the amounts other teams were spending at the time.
I met Mo back in 2003 and asked him about this. He told me he was still getting death threats sent in the mail at the time, and he was living in the USA at that point
That's shocking
Walter Tull was actually the first black Rangers player before WW1.

Cracking player for Rangers. I loved it. Got it right up that lot and the wrong types elsewhere. Great signing.
Hey guys. Could you please do a video on the history of football jerseys? I'd like to see their evolution from the different types of material used to make them, through to the baggy-shirted '90s up until the modern day.
Hope you'll consider.
My favourite ever Rangers signing. Souness never gets enough credit for doing this. As for MoJo, I just fucking love the man.
Second for me behind Colin Stein but it was a fantastic signing for several reasons. One; he was a very good player. Two; it drove Timdom absolutely mental. Three; it signalled that Rangers were finished with that nonsense. Four; it upset the moronic bigots.
@@Britonbear are they really finished with that nonsense though?

Just to note that John Sheridan was an Irish midfielder (born in England)
Or more accurately he was an English midfielder who played for Ireland.
What a player. He'll always be welcome at Ibrox.
True that, and he never ever will be welcome back at Park-head from the rotten faced hateful plastic paddy support!!!!
Michael Smith Could that not have more to do with the fact that he promised to sign for Celtic and then turned around and not only didn't honour his word but went on to sign for their biggest rivals instead. Look at Arsenal fan's treatment of Van Persie when he joined United, look at how Barca fans treated Figo after joining Madrid. Supporters naturally get upset when their players join rival teams.
I remember this. Everyone went bananas over it on both sides. I bought a t shirt from the barras that says “I’m a member of the I hate mo Johnston fan club” with a print of johnston in the middle. they were sold in both blue and green. When I wore it people would stop their cars and shout out the window “what does that say on your t shirt?” and they would laugh when I told em. Looking back it’s kinda funny but at the time people took it all deadly serious.I half expected his house would get blown up. Thats how badly people took it on both sides of the divide. He made himself the most hated man in Scotland by just signing his name.
The Tim’s were raging then and they’re still raging now😂😂😂

Celtic fans had every right to be upset about it. The kit man Jimmy bell got on well with Johnston. It was a running Joke at the training camp in Italy. The players set up a table where he would sit himself etc. was welcomed well at Rangers.
Respect to Graeme Souness even though he's a RS legend and Mo Johnston who then went on to play for us at The People's Club. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.

can you do about hull city manager? marco silva..
They're 4th in the league based on game played since he's joined. Amazing! - Danny
I really like how this has been put together...a very creative way to show history. The only thing I would have added to this is that his time at Rangers was very successful, he applied himself very professionally and gained the quiet respect of many doubters. He was an excellent player. I'm a Glaswegian who loves football and doesn't have any allegiance to Celtic or Rangers, so I wasn't really immersed in the associated tensions at the time.
Well done Mo!

Bullshit, the bigots of the Celtic support are the reason he rarely returns to Glasgow. I don’t know any Rangers fan who hates him.
Clapton Ultras this is such bullshit, Celtic fans hate him because of sectarianism and you know it.
Clueless Clapton!
This is the sort of thing that has to be stamped out of rangers and stamped out of Scottish football. As a rangers fan, I think we need to do more to eradicate this problem. For the future and benefit of the club.
He was a brilliant player none the less.
If Rangers had signed John Sheridan presumably that wouldnt have gone down well either would it?,he was probably a Catholic and played for ROI.
it would have gone down a lot better amongst Celtic fans.
The closing comments are a bit inaccurate.Johnston could walk into any Rangers supporters club anywhere in the world and be treated like a hero

@@williambolton4698 dinnae forget liquidattttion
@@maidaomahati9414 I didn't really want to go into the liquidation of Celtic as it causes their fans huge levels of irritation but of course, you're right Celtic effectively went into Liquidation in 1994 when Fergus McCann bought the club minutes before it was closed down by their bank. He reconstituted Celtic Football & Athletic Company Limited into a Public Limited Company called Celtic PLC. So if Celtic were judged by the standards that their fans use to criticize Rangers then Celtic died in 1994.There were no calls from the so-called bigoted Rangers fans to kick the new club out of the league, there were no hypocritical referrals to "sporting integrity", Rangers fans accepted that the "biscuit tin" years at Parkhead had finally caught up with them but were content to see Celtic survive, A few decades later however when Rangers, the reigning Scottish Champions, were hit by a crippling and hugely over estimated tax bill (many suspect this was done to make an example of a high profile yet non-english football club by HMRC and their Irish born head official) what happened? Screams of anger and demands to kill Rangers as an institution which continue to this day by the knuckle dragging bigots. So, who are the bigots? Both clubs have them but if you listen to the media and to You Tube contributors such as this then you would believe that Rangers are worse than Celtic when the facts show something quite different.

John Spencer had been with Rangers when Mo arrived. He wasnt a first team player at the time. But John is Catholic. Mo got all the headlines because he was a former Celtic player. Not because of what church he did or didnt go too.

The sooner Scottish football rids itself of its pathetic religious ties the better. As you can probably tell from the vast majority of comments here, the small mindedness of people are to blame. People that know nothing abut religion all of sudden become experts when the old form are involved. Both Rangers, Celtic and the rest are great clubs, however the supporters are what drag them into the gutter and part of the problem in regards to the game moving forward.
Badly_Dubbed just not going to happen though. Those parts of Glasgow, and the massive support of both clubs from NI means sectarianism in those 2 clubs will continue forever. It’s in the identity of the 2 clubs, they’re tied up in all of that history and imagery and there’s no getting away from it
This was nothing to with breaking religious rules by the old rangers it was souness saying to Celtic we can sign any player you go for a bit of one upmanship
John Sheridan was Irish (won 34 caps for the ROI). His signing would have been a problem for the bigots in Rangers' support as well.
Could you do a video about the racist treatment Mark Walters received at Parkhead every time he played there for Rangers?
You should do won on Mark Walters. He got the worst of it.
Try and make a video abut Rangers FC being liquidated and corruption in the Scottish game.
That would be one heck of a long video. You should check out a video called The Asterisk Years. Once an English bank got control of Rangers they didn't give a shit about Proddy supremacy and only cared about profit. Once they lost their unlimited overdraft that Bank of Scotland had given them things started to go bad. Murray through his connections in the posh area of Edinburgh had made a lot of friends in Scottish banking. BOS had given Rangers around £70 million in overdraft yet the same bank wanted to pull the plug on Celtic over a £9 million debt.
