We took over the road district and are making things happen! We brought in some heavy equipment including a Caterpillar 140 grader, and a Dynapac smooth drum roller. Unfortunately my ‪@GoPro‬ camera continues to be an absolute pile of garbage and a lot of the footage was ruined. So after this I'm done with it and going back to my trusty and faithful ‪@DJI‬ camera.,

Interesting video and good job Casey. The guy operating the grader did a great job considering he didn’t have a gauge to show the slope. Must have been using his Eyecrometer. (Paul from FabRats favourite tool). 😎

The percentage slope of the crown of road changes from type of material and different parts of country. I've graded interstate in Az. at 1% and county roads [gravel] in Mt. at 3% . Usually pavement is at 1.5%. A typical crown section is easy , what gets hard is Supers [where both lanes lean 1 direction for cornering] and the transition in and out of a super. With gps and sonic systems you can actually set the machine to do this auto. also I like thinking of percentage in feet/ tens. So a 2% would be 2 tens at 10 ft. That is why most grade rods have tens instead of inches .

The only thing I would add is that you don't get good compaction without water. Although it adds to the cost, a water truck to moisten the aggregate really makes a hard surface which will repel rain.

When I served in the army in Malaysia in 70s, we were informed that there's many of old roads on the west coast where we were on operation, the roads had negative camber in which if wet our truck's might slide off the road at speed, the reasons for this building was by the POW prisoners by the Japanese in the war used thousands of Australian and British and Indian plus many other nationality in slave labour building the roads. So the engineer's involved made sure that the camber was so for the Japanese truck's to fall over, ☺.

I wish we could overthrow my council as they will resurface the same dead end street EVERY SINGLE YEAR (a road with 8 or 10 homes) yet my street that was last resurfaced in 1990 (about 23years after it was first paved) hasn't been done once. It's now looking like a Scottish kilt with the amount of patches due to subdivison of blocks and burst pipes etc(which I forced to be resolved in 2019 by going to local member or parliament as water company refused to do anything 😂...(same pipe would be replaced 2 within a week as it burst again lol)
The guys doing the replacement work(essentially laying new main alongside old one) were really nice and friendly to.
Council tho are ummm how shall I put this 🍆😤s. They literally don't care unless the road is where one their staff live.
To go into context. I can now use a pitchfork on the freaking road and pull chunks of asphalt up lol(been tempted to act in middle of night to make it really bad 😂😂😂😂.

I spent 2 weeks rolling that lot, and the geo guy knew how much effort I put in, so he tested twice as many samples to try and call me out... We had 100 percent compaction everywhere, and it was a special compaction permit with stricter requirements we got a dinner and drinks for my effort then I ran a sweeper in the existing inland port scary job... got another dinner

The clerk ask what plant he'd driven and answered. Don't remember the numbers but they were yellow ones.

Hey we rig drivers don’t blow through most steep grades! At least not all of them.
We only don’t down shift if those grades are not that steep n safe n depending on how heavy the truck is.
Newbies do the stupid stuff or the overconfident oldies become unsafe. Especially with top heavy loads. You got to slow down on curves n downshift on downgrades. There’s been times we did downshift n was fully loaded n cars would jump in front of us n make us use our brakes n burn them up. I get so irritated with stupid car drivers, Stay away from rigs n DO NOT dart out in front of them when they are going downhill or at a place where they need to stop.
We were on a steep grade fully loaded n trying to stay slow n not burn up the brakes also but these stupid cars got in front of us on so many occasions n I could not believe their stupidity. We can’t stop! Period! If cars wouldn’t do that then trucks would have to try n maneuver around them n try to miss cars n make it unsafe for everyone.
Let the rigs have their Space n don’t get in front of them unless they are at a dead stop, then to get in front of them to get your head start is ok, but NOT while they are trying to stop or going down a hill or cut them off on a highway. It’s suicide!
That is the trucks space n the truck will run you over, so don’t take a rigs space.
Sometimes being extremely tired is from being pushed by companies n get to where we are not being able to think very well.
If drivers are tired n need to take a nap, they won’t pull over so that they can make their appointments n not get fired by the company for being late. That’s why drivers have accidents.
Truckers who are good at taking naps make the best drivers. Truckers who have to have 8 hours sleep n not good at napping are not very good drivers.
All Vehicles n not just rigs need to slow down their speed altogether.
One time my husband and I both were so tired we had to slip seat every 5 minutes cuz we were both falling asleep.
Then when they got us unloaded we barely woke up to move the truck out of the dock after only getting to sleep a half an hour.
It’s crazy being a truck driver going without sleep. N the hours down in between is for preparing for next trip n washing laundry n still not enough rest.
You could sleep the entire time off for being so tired. It will add 20 years to your look.
We drive tired to tired and don’t always know what state we are in.
N bad directions can get truck drivers in terrible binds. Or even passing a drive because it’s not marked properly.
And a time cruncher n especially when a driver is overly tired are the backups which aren’t meant for these larger rigs.
It’s insane n takes lots of practice. Once you get a lot of years then it becomes easier but still get into binds at times.
We never had accidents because we are safe and we plan, and we aren’t afraid to tell the company No, we aren’t driving on ice n snow n freezing fog n etc... go ahead n fire us. We’ve never had an accident n hopefully will not ever have one.
We drive out of troubles also even though time is out. That’s stupid to pull over when you know there’s a tornado or something that you could run from!
A driver knows what they are capable of. And if they don’t heed what they know then they will have consequences. And may cause consequences for others.
LOL sorry for the little rant n info.
I’d be here all day telling unbelievable trucker stories, and if I didn’t live them, I wouldn’t believe them... N RV stories.

      @TheWestlandgirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

For years I have said that I would rather drive with a bunch of big rigs than with just cars/passenger trucks! I try to anticipate where you will need to get out to pass without losing gears and will hold up car traffic. Might piss off a few of them but tough. 🙂
Once did a 3 hour trip running into Toronto from east of Kingston. Traffic wasn't heavy and I ended up kind of adopting a big rig. I knew he could pass me on the downhill and I would pass him on the uphill . . it worked well and I enjoyed the drive. Stopped at the traffic plaza/service centre and came out of the washroom and a guy just standing around asked if I was the one driving the little black car. I said 'yes' and he said "I want to thank you. I've come from New Brunswick on this run and you have made the drive interesting and kept me awake - I've only got a few miles until I'm home so it didn't seem worth stopping before." It kind of made my day. 🙂

I'm a truck driver. I enjoyed his comment about the hill grades, "or just blow through it and hope for the best". He is definitely right about the % grade signs to give truckers an idea of what speed and gear to be at. 6% grade running "heavy" = low gears at about 35 to 40 mph, no matter what the speed limit is. That's why you see 18 wheelers going down hill slowly with their hazards flashing. They're using the engine to keep the truck speed down so that they don't burn up the brakes and end up using a runaway ramp (the runaway ramp is the best case scenario, by the way).

@Toolbox Console. Thanks for keeping the goods on the road safely. I will sure pass on driving through the mountains. Kansas hills are steep enough for me. I grew up riding in a Binder through the hills of Arkansas. I don’t even want to chance the necessity of a run away ramp.

GoPros are garbage! and I've lost so much important footage years ago it's not funny, things that will never happen again lost forever because the camera says its recording, but it lies also it shuts off on its own out of the blue! thought i was getting the best footage of my life then later im devastated because there's nothing there, still upset about it to this day, can you tell lol;) and great job taking over the street department! Need more like you out there!!

GoPro Cameras. Can you tell us how you really feel? Seriously, I have seen only a few reviews. I guess I will not buy one. More work on the road. Reminds me of a song about a chain gang? Maybe the towns could save some money and hire chain gangs?

No joke, I love the keen shoes I wear everyday. I have had years of issues with regular work shoes/boots. I found Keen boots two years ago and I have been wearing them ever since, I know own 3 pairs to be honest cause they don't fall apart after a month of gas and oil being saturated. Great boots. Keep up the great work Cassie

Wish I lived on your dirt rds you should see the ones in my county. They hire anyone that can drive a grader and that's all they do no compacting and 3 days later the Rd is just as bad if not worse then when they did it. In my 33yrs of living on the same dirt Rd they have never brought in any new gravel. And where I'm from 90% of the Rds are dirt.
