It existed for about half the 19th century, reaching its zenith in the 1870s to prevent smuggling of salt and essential goods the rural population got impoverished and exploited due to heavy taxation by invaders and upper ruling class behaved like their puppets and pimps .

No amount of words can express the gratitude we have towards babasaheb and our constitution!!! The most basic human rights and respect being snatched away by people because their minds were rotten, is beyond inhumane! I don't have much hope for our society, but the fact that the constitution has considered everyone equal, is a relief.

I am form punjab , and my father who is in public sector ( lucky for me ) , he used to tell that our forefathers had to work on fields of upper caste people, and in return they used to give us left over bread made of maize and rotten butter milk, they also used to go forest for hunting and he himself has done that in his early childhood.
Watching this video made me realise why people in my community would like to eat grass and wild herbs and shrubs

Eating wild plants is not something only Dalits did, but i am surprised many of the plants he cooked is said to be poisonous here, i wonder how did those berries taste. what i really dislike though, was untouchability, which even lower caste people practiced against Dalits.

It's because of the social order, we are living in till now since centuries, and that is not made by us, you see there is concept of sanskritization in which lower caste people try to emulate high caste people.
The responsibility of annihilation of caste goes first those who made it.
And yes, the responsibility of shunning caste goes to educated also, but our society is just so fucked up to do that.

As an "upper caste" Hindu, I am a bit embarrased to say I never thought about this. That there would be a different cuisine for Dalits due to discrimination. Of course, it would differ from one region to another throughout the subcontinent. But even so.
I've seen videos of foods from all over the world, but never knew about this.
EDIT: There seems to be a misunderstanding among some in the comments. I used the double quotes around the words some of you find objectionable precisely because they are so. I don't believe in caste. The caste system is the root cause of India's suffering for about 2000 years, if not more. Dr. Ambedkar's Annihilation Of Caste is a work worth reading and understanding.

My problem is that society treats Dalits as untouchables, intelligent, unhygienic, uncultured people. And so many customs n cuisines of d lower castes have vanished over time. As for what u said, I can understand why many fellow Dalits don't want to be Dalits, it's bcuz d society treats dem badly. As for me, if I had to choose between being born a dalit or a Brahmin, I wud choose to be born a dalit. Bcuz it makes me more empathetic to d pain of others, let it be d pain of blacks in America, or d violence against women or d discrimination dat st's n bc's face in india. I can now understand others pain better, it makes me a better human being, it makes me want to become better for everyone person in d society dats suffering from a biological disease or from a social disease called caste. A dalits customs, cuisine etc are also viewed as inferior and polluting by the upper castes. So many Dalits n lower castes internalize d shame at a very young age n distance themselves from their ancestral cuisine n traditions. This has lead to dalit customs starting to perish overtime. Which is why there is a need to revive these lost customs. I hope u can also enjoy n participate in d customs of ur community.

Obviously not to discriminate other castes, but simply to say that the society can't try and cage me for being a dalit. I am free and no one can shame me or it. I am not clinging to my identity, I am asserting it. I have many identities, being dalit is one of them. Wow!!! The history of the brutalities and mistreatment against the so-called lower castes by the so-called upper castes has not been documented enough. It is a curse and stain that will not only never wash off, it WILL be our undoing for eons to come. I am so happy that there is a real effort by these communities to showcase and document their stories. More power to them. I cannot wait to snag a copy!❤

Reservation is still a necessity in the Indian society. Talking from a pragmatic point of view. We are already the most populous country on Earth and still growing, yet adamantly holding the place in "low-income countries" for a hot minute now. And this is unlikely to change in the distant future too. Hence we need as many prosperous, efficient, educated people as possible.

This is a silly and in fact very funny problem so-called upper cast came up with why?? One of my friends who is from the upper cast was walking with me and he asked me do I eat beef 🐄 I told him that I don't but, when it was legal back in 2012 I used to eat it. He did not say anything but his face was sick, so I asked him if you got a chance to have an intimate relationship with a foreigner who eats beef will you accept it or not he said he would happily accept it 😂 so I asked him then why you have problems with us… he did not have an answer. It's just education, we all have the same DNA 🧬 there is no point in arguing that if any person from the upper cast doesn't want to eat beef no problem. (it's just a status game upper cast doesn't want to lose the status of the upper cast even if we all equal)
It's just money, education, and health. Which makes us different 🎉❤ WE ALL ARE SAME 🤝 NO ONE IS ABOVE US NO ONE IS DOWN US. Same same
