I'm Jamaican Chinese. My grandfather came from China & worked in JA. He met my grandmother there & had 4 children. He took 2 boys back to China leaving my aunt & dad with my grand mother hoping to return. Sadly he never did b/c of illness which he ended up dying. Yrs later my aunt had a chance to visit China to see our family, but my dad also fell ill & never made the trip. Sadly he never saw his brothers again. One died in China & my dad passed 5 yrs ago. My families story was very sad, but we've managed to meet some of our cousins in NY in the 80's. I'm so proud of my Jamaican Chinese heritage!!!

The Chinese have the lockdown on the grocery business in Jamaica. They get a bad rep a lot of times but at the end of the day most Jamaicans I know who are price conscious buy their groceries from the Chiney man. Even with the emergence of Mega Mart and other American style supermarkets the Chiney shop still has a loyal following because their prices are fair. Often times their exchange rate on foreign currency is better than the cambios too.

Funny but I had worked with the Chines one Wilson LeeSang ,after my scholarship paper was burnt . I cursed the Catholics , because my boss was Catholic, but as strange faith would have it ,I got in so well with the Chinese , they treated me so well. To this day anywhere I got , I am finding Chinese friend !!~

Back in the days Mr Chin ( JAMAICANS call most Chinese Mr.chin) shop was where most of , if not all poor JAMAICANS bought n truss their daily n weekly groceries from. They (the Chinese) had a little book that they use to make a note of wat the people truss and how much they paid and had a balance cause de.pay was small n that couldent buy food n take care of the other things they needed to SURVIVE. To I when I look back at those days the Chinese played a very important part of how de poor ( black) people survived week on week out n that's a FACT. NO 1 who was living here inna JA. can deny. Bless up

My fada is my hero if I ever had 1. Reason is I am saying to I self this man is either a madman or im is very adventurous. Cause my father spoke very little english n most of his vocabulary taught to him by the rude boys n bad man dem who lived around the area where we lived at 1 time back in deh day inna jones twn. at benow st. in front of dis big dance hall. Memories Don't leave like people do .
Bad wud wreck but both my parents were well liked by the 90+% people who were black or coloured who buy dem groceries at the chinney man shop at de conor .

The new wave of chinese immigration is not necessarily a good thing but we as Jamaican must understand that we live in a Globalized world now . If someone is to be blamed it is the government who are not looking out for our long term interests.

In everything, we look for someone to blame. A we being prevented from migrating to Asian countries?
In what ways has the presence of the Chinese in Jamaica prevented us from being educated and achieving?
Was it our laziness and lack of proper planning which has caused their business to be thriving while ours have been closing in some communities? I could go on.

I beg to disagree, Chinese have been in Jamaica for hundred of years. My mother just passed at 102 years and she told us of the Chinese of years ago who rode their donkeys and worked very hard to achieve their goals. Chinese groceries were all over the country side, I went to school with many Chinese and found them to be very nice hard working people. Many Jamaicans are complaining about the Chinese taking over, yet Jamaicans are all over the world, Brooklyn is like little Jamaica, they are in Belize,Costa Rico,Cuba , London and I could go on and on. They complain about the Chinese controlling the jobs . The Jamaicans of today, need to develop better work ethics, be more disciplined and honest. If they do not want the Chinese there, they need to invest in business and employ their own. The Chinese are not the gunmen and the robbers, they are basically peaceful people. As Jamaicans, we travel out to other countries, we invest, some of us become millionaires in our adopted countries which we could not do in Jamaica. Stop criticizing the Chinese and come up with a solution to save our beautiful Jamaica from the criminals who are not Chinese. It’s out of many. One people and the Chinese living in Jamaica are Jamaicans and have the right to exist. I am sure the complainants are those who have nothing to contribute and also know nothing about the history of Chinese, Jews, Indians, Spanish. Lebanese and others who migrated to Jamaica over a century ago and contributed to our growth. Stop complaining and take a page from the book of these hard working people, Jamaica belongs to us all.

    1. Jamaica is not independent, the Queen is still head of State. 2. The Chinese were brought over by the British as a buffer class and they continue to be so. 3. The new wave of Chinese investment and immigration is nothing but Neo-colonialism. 4. We are not all Jamaican, black Jamaican’s are the original Taino people, we are native to the Island. No matter how long you live in China, if you’re black they will never see you as Chinese.

Unlike their fellow immigrants from China and India who had begun arriving in Jamaica in the mid-19th century, the Syrians and the Lebanese did not land on the island as indentured labourers. They, like the Jews who had arrived centuries before, came of their own free will, albeit fleeing religious persecution.

I'm quarter Indian and I speak standard English as a jamaican- almost all my family members speak the patua way, but my mom is quarter Chinese I think and my great grandfather was full Indian! African history is really interesting along with Chinese history of indentured labour, who knew this would be so interesting and spectacular! I'm in grade 6 learning about our African past and indentured labour, it's really fascinating
