Thanks for sharing this video. It's wonderful to see Jamaica back then. It was bustling in Kingston and still is today. The buildings in Spanish town were so grand. I left Jamaica as a child in 1983 so this is wonderful history that I never knew . Thank you🤗
My father was born in 1930's Jamaica. My Mother in 1940's Jamaica. I was born in 1960's England. Our children were born in late 1990's and 2000's in The Netherlands / Holland. So my side of family has gone from Jamaica to England to The Netherlands in 3 generations. Still, its nice to see pictures of the environment my parents lived in. And guess what? A yard, we still chat Patois.
Oooooooh 🥰🥰 it's such a beauty to watch , so much memories , and see how that young man actually ran up that tall coconut tree , and how they husk the coconut on the stone , people were more slimmer , healthy and stronger in those days , because it was more manual labor , Beautiful , God bless Jamaica land we love 👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️
The evil sown did not come to full harvest as yet; like people imprisoned for speaking about the criminal injustices under British rule. I think it was called " the act of sedition"; which was a good example of Fascism. And the same as today; witness a one being pulled from under his bed by a so called security thug with a machine gun or a nursing mother being pepper sprayed in a public taxi and no one charged for the offence; not to speak of the total disregard for Rasis Nzinga's and other Rases' Human Rights by the insecurity forces during the COVID. Scam. Do we pay taxes to be imposed upon with injustice by our employees, the Public Servants? It is said the more things change, is the more it remains the same. Hence, the mentality has to change to have permanent and meaningful change. Good day.
“The two hours for lunch club” What an ignorant remark. If the leisure club expended even half the energy by that time of day; in the tropical heat; they’d be dead.
Some of those buildings on King Street are still standing, not in such great shape, a shame. I remember walking on the covered sidewalks on King Street as a child in the 60's and the cream colored buildings @8:25. The memories. Before she married, my mom worked at Issa's on King Street, seen early on the tour of King Street. Thanks for posting this.
6:14, I seem to get the impression that the down-town streets of Jamaica were a lot more ordered and better presented back in those days than they are today (but when I think about it old U.K. footage of London has similar apparent order; fewer vehicles, less congestion). There are certainly indicators of colonial oplulence. I notice comments on the swastika. Those that regard it negatively need to research its history (it long pre-dates the 1930's). Arianism is another thing that was hijacked and warped by Nazis; again if you don't know research it's Persian (Aria)/Iranian roots. Historically those that aim to conquer will pillage in the process and claim things as their own. The Nazis were notorious for such acts (stealing precious property, stealing research knowledge, destroying connections, distorting facts..).!
for you to say this sounds so ignorant. a video shot in the 1930s is going to reflect jamaica as it is today? WOW! I am not jamaican but I find the video a delight.
Did you look carefully to see that NOT ONE Black person was relaxing but always worki ng. I say this without any racist intent but those were times when the rich relied on old money to spend a lot of their time vacationing and galavanting. This is the Feudal mindset, enjoying life at the expense of the poor laborer and included in that, is wealth handed down from Slavery. Today if someone walked around and there are vacationers, there would be a mix of different ethnicities, a more fair life.
Yes I noticed the Nazi flag as well. Then I realized it was the 1930's... At that time no one had any problem with them. Probably whoever those Nazis that was there was visiting the many Jamaican-Germans that lived there at the time. "Germaicans" as they are called by some.
WOW! Jamaica looks so nice and clean and orderly. The country looks booming and happy. What a pleasure to see Jamaica with out all the butus all over the street. Being a British Colony was not a bad thing at all!
I find it cool that someone got video footage of places like here so long ago. Youse on here want to just argue about how things went w/o thinking of how amazing it is that we can even see footage like this from that timeframe. we know people did wrong back then & plenty do wrong these days too that likely won't fully be discovered the magnitude of it for a long time, like what is causing climate change. I wonder how rare these recordings on this channel & other similar channels are. Question: Why does the timecode 'TCR' have a time that is so high? 12 hours? Is the original tape that long? What is the reference point in the TCR?
9:29 A launch leaving the docks bearing a Nazi German Flag. Keep in mind this was before the war and could have simply been a launch for a cruise ship. Still very interesting to see this on video.
@vandella223 Most Haitians are from Benin (Dahomey) where as most Jamaicans are Ashanti,Fanti.Twi. Coromantee (Ghana), Even within Nigeria, Igbo,Yuroba,Hausa and Fulani are different and they share the same country. It's like saying French and Italians are the same, because they both happen to be European, which they are not.
I think Obama should do us all a gigantic favour and release classified CIA documents detailing how guns were transported to Jamaica and which politicians living or deceased are implicated.
After the WW1 before WW2 Jamaica still a British colony . Yes we at least have a rich history. This film is like a time machine, Oh Jamaica, land we love, the jewel of the Caribbean.
I knew it had to have been a white woman filming. "The 2 hour lunch break club" nothing but black women sleeping and sitting around gossiping. "The light work for .20 cents per day" a black woman breaking down rockstone or just smoking. The black man climbing coconut trees, picking and shelling them might be included. To this day, this stereotype still follow Jamaicans which is why they tend to work many jobs and work very hard to prove people wrong.
Jay Kaye That's he problem - Prove to who - the white people! When black people start learning that we don't have to prove anything to them that's when we can be truly free.
Can someone please tell me that in still frame or moving we all see natural distortion in this video but look really really close at 7:10 to maybe 7:13 what the hell is in the sky may be 5 or so one shot in the direction of 11:00 or so then faded out feedback please. 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👍
I totally agree, the gun situation was created during the Michael Manley era when he decided to embrace a more socialist political adventure and was openly flirting with Fidel Castro, whom we all know is America's longest enemy in the region. So the CIA decided to teach Jamaica and other central American countries a lesson.
Dem still under a spell hopefully they see now is an opportunity to... dare I say REBEL!!! Ahhh any way you take it the island is not belonging to the inhabitants, they are mere pawns in this game of chess.
good comment. I think xaymaicana completely misunderstood the different concepts between ethnic heritage , regional different and most importantly languages.
If for so many years after independence things are the way they are, there is no hope until the mindset changes. How likely is that in the next 50 years?
We need to utalize the Caribbean with yacht, fisheries and boats. There are eight thousand islands in the Caribbean Sea. It is the frontier of our vast wealth to be sustained, maintained and not to be polluted nor destroyed.
yow come of a dis with your Haitians comment..this is about Jamaica go find a video of Haiti and comment on it. I am tired of it now man every video I go on about Jamaica I see hatians commenting about Haiti, its about time it stop now.
Jamaica is not part of the Antilles, and in fact, it is quite far from the Antilles. It is in a completely different region from the Caribbean and the Bahamas.
@venessa32 jamaicans and haitians are somewhat the same we have been together throughout history along with cuba, we cannot have a certain look because we are all mixed of different ancestry. there are tons of people of jamaican/haitian decent both in jamaica and in haiti.
So these American tourists go by steam boat to the port of Kingston, a drive uphill in to the interior, Hope Gardens, a beach lined with palm trees, The Rodney Memorial in Spanish Town, a sit down farmer market, Kings Street in Kingston, see the Queen Victoria statue in the Victoria park (now called Saint William Grant Park). These trams no longer exists, not in the video were trains that also no longer exist. (Some farmer market traders living on) '...20 cents a day' is shocking, they should of got given welfare and a labour exchange.

If Jamaica stayed a British Colony then there would be welfare and free movement, it would be a part of Britain. I reckon plenty of British people would live in Jamaica and plenty of Jamaican people live in Britain.
Have to disagree with you. Look to our neighbors i.e Caymans, Bermuda, Turks. The Caymans and Turks were dependencies of Jamaica up to 1962. More banks , eletricity, etc. would have come about and probably bigger and better with development anyway. Loas Angeles is not what it used to be in the 1930's, and neither is Dallas. Same with Kingston, the things you mention come about naturally with technology and international economic gentrification. Under the British those things would have been bigger and better since, crime and slackness which has been allowed to take-over the country would not have been tolerated.
Before they invaded in other countries and started exterminating the Jews - the Nazis were actually pretty popular. The British even copied some of their social policies - like in healthcare. It's amazing how fast things can turn.
As a Jamaican living in America looking at this I can say when white people ran the country it was much cleaner…Kingston is a dump now…why do Jamaicans celebrate independence and has not gotten better since it’s independence ???
Same was finna say the same thing was just down there in August and it looked alright but not as clean as this also most Jamaicans just throw all their trash directly onto the ground for no reason even when driving you see everyone dashing stuff onto the ground it's sad brodi
I am grateful for this video which allows us to see what life was like in Jamaica back then.

And less clothing too
Disposable fashion wrecking our pockets n planet .
The book called, "The Destruction Of The Black Civilization, by Chancy Williams", explains it all.
