Back to the start! Ritual was one of the first songs Tobias wrote for Ghost and it was part of the famous upload to My Space. This is so basic it could be. Tobias wrote every note and all the lyrics. Recorded in a basement studio in Linköping with Tobias on guitar and keyboard, Ludvig Kennberg on drums and i think Gustav Lindström on bass. Simon Söderberg was the technician and Tobias produced the album under the moniker Gene Walker. Tobias still had his daytime job here because he and his wife had baby twins so it was recorded after 8 hour's of work and changing diapers at home on the kids when he could get a couple of hours to focus on this his new project. Good reaction. NEMA!

You guys are spot on in the analysis at 6:13. Tobias has said he wanted Ghost to sound like a band that had played in the 1960s and 70s. If wanna listen to one of their “re-releases” from the 1960s, check out Kiss the Go-Goat. 😉

What she said about the anti Lords prayer is exactly right with the bands typical themes and meanings. The dead human sacrifices also flips the Catholic communion on its head...if the eucharist (bread) represents the "body of Christ" then it's also "dead human sacrifices" on an altar. Ghost is all about that, but it's of course all theatrical. I think of it as a horror movie in music form. There are some Christian fans of Ghost that Ive seen. Ghost's lyrics are not meant to be taken literally for sure, the members are not Satanists.

    • @FlameImperishable
      @FlameImperishable  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

As a Christian myself, I fully appreciate lyrics criticizing hypocrisy in the church because that really is a true evil. Also I can't imagine anyone really being a Satanist in earnest, but maybe I'm being naïve. Seems all theatrical and satirical more than truly promoting devil worship. Am I wrong?

@@FlameImperishable Most satanists I've seen and know don't have any religious grounding anyway, in a way the image of Satan is used by them for the shock factor, a counterculture statement and as a criticism of churches and really toxic practices of clerical higher ups.
Also, if they guide the sinners and blasphemers to the devil, are they not doing the lord's will too in a twisted way~?

Listen to Stand By Him, a part of the same album as Ritual. Also it was conceptually the first song for Ghost, the riff and chord progression inspired Tobias to start the band.

Honestly, all of Opus is amazing. It sounds very different than their current stuff. Tobias is very good at writing catchy lyrics/phrases and Opus has a LOT of that. Elizabeth, Ritual, Con Clavi, Satan Prayer, etc. All on Opus!

I know I’m late but I think the guitar riff in the beginning is reminding you of Symphony of Destruction by Megadeath. I had the same feeling but I connected it to Guitar Hero for some reason. I chewed on that riff for a bit until the lyrics to SoD started rolling out.
    You take a mortal man
    And put him in control
    Watch him become a god
    Watch people’s heads a’roll

Not gonna lie: I do miss the more... doomy/slow kind of stuff they were doing in the beginning. Yes, they had doom metal elements there, which made sense.
It's what made me a fan of the band. While they're no longer the band I remember, I still enjoy their tunes and had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times on stage.

Idk how I feel about how some of the fans that have reached out to you have tried to gatekeep their sound and discredit the new stuff in favor of the old. They’ve always been pretty poppy. They never release the same kind of record twice. I get having preferences, but Opus and Infest era Ghost fans tend to be a little averse to change. Not that I blame them, I think infest is probably their second best album.

@@shortdude-xc1ok Tobias has stated on multiple occasions that that angle of the band's mythology is not to be taken seriously. (Tobias) has said several times their image is all tongue-in-cheek, citing that "We have no militant agenda. We are an entertainment group."[5] Infestissumam also deals with "how people relate to a deity or God, themes like submission and superstition, the horrors of being religious."[108] Additionally, a Nameless Ghoul said the second album is about "how mankind-predominantly men-what they have deemed to be the presence of the Devil, throughout history and even nowadays. And that’s why the record is so fueled with sexual themes and females ... the Inquisition was basically men accusing women of being the Devil just because they had a hard-on for them."
This is well-represented in Kaisarion from the soon-to-be-released album which reads: "Kaisarion, a matter of love
When Mother Earth is calling for a father up above
      Kaisarion, put on the smiles
And throw your holy rocks right at her for her satanic wiles." Relax. Enjoy. Kiss The Go-Goat.
