its not so much to do with traction (in this vehicle) but four wheels accelerating the vehicle forward instead of two.

no 4wd is and should only ever be used in offroad. It does not behave like awd. 4wd is a permanent lock and can damage the car when driven on grippy surfaces, such as the roads

@@ha_ha-ha_ha Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD system has a full-time 4WD position without the permanent lock, and is designed to be driven like an AWD car. It also has a centre differential lock and high/low range selection for off-road.
@yohannes kurniawan On dry bitumen, being in 4Hi will not give much (if any) acceleration advantage over 2Hi because the vehicle doesn't make enough power / torque to break traction in a straight line. In wet, slippery or uneven conditions, though, 4Hi would give better traction and less chance of losing acceleration through wheelspin.
