In October 1968, I heard this piece over and over and over again- forever- on the jet taking me to Vietnam as a young artilleryman. Didn't know if I would make it, survive &come back,so decided to have that musical memory etched, as a farewell anthem. I made it back. And also I'm a classically trained musician, have played it, conducted it.

Well it's pretty normal, one of the strengths of classical music is that they perfectly understood that for a part in a piece to feel powerful and loud you have to be very quiet and gentle before hand, this gives It so much more intensity.

It feels so emotional to play, especially the part at 5:45 it felt like we were wailing without voices, it was beautiful, moving, awe-inspiring, and filled both us performers and the audience with emotion and just this energy. Tchaikovsky was interested in Serbian music folklore and via diplomatic
circles and his connections with Serbian Consulate in Vienna he got the material from serbian composer Kornelije Stanković through the hands of H.E. Mikhail Rajevski, russian diplomat in Vienna. Tchaikovsky was sooooo impresed by it that he wrote corresspondention via letters with Rajevski where he said that he include several melodies in his (what is gonna to be) famous composition for symphony orchestra "Marché Slave" ("Serbian-Russian march"). There are autographs that can confirm this historical facts.
And to conclude this brief statement Slavs are Slav people, not the slaves, we at Balkan are protectors not slaves. You will see the truth some day, hopefully, we are praying to God to open your heart to see the truth that is written in our history. Best regards from Serbia

About False name of the march. True name is "Slavic march"
In September 1876 Tchaikovsky received an order of the Directorate of the Russian Musical Society concert to write in favor of the march of the Red Cross Society. Charity concert was intended for the benefit of the wounded in the Russian-Turkish war. All Russian society itself Tchaikovsky with great sympathy and awe attitude to what is happening in the Balkans, the Slavic peoples struggle against Ottoman rule. During the works of Tchaikovsky march calls it "Serbo-Russian March". In March edition is named "Slavic". One of the hallmarks of Tchaikovsky this period, there was an appeal to the musical folklore of various nations. For example, it uses the Serbian tunes in the works dealing with the events of the war in the Balkans. The march Tchaikovsky uses three authentic Serbian folk themes and Russian National Anthem "God Save the Tsar!".

Eeeer, "slave" in French ("slavic") has nothing to do with "slave" in English ("esclave") And they don't sound the same. The "a" in French "slave" is pronounced "ah" and not "ay" Also, cool to know about Russian.

    • @Rizoof1
      @Rizoof1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

It does mean "Slavic March" in French. Russian nobility used to speak French as a sign of refinement. And the word slave and esclave come from latin Sclavus which comes from an old-Slavic ("Старословенски“) word "slovenin" which means Slav.
slave (v.) Look up slave at Dictionary.com
1550s, "to enslave," from slave (n.). The meaning "work like a slave" is first recorded 1719. Related: Slaved; slaving.
slave (n.) Look up slave at Dictionary.com
late 13c., "person who is the chattel or property of another," from Old French esclave (13c.), from Medieval Latin Sclavus "slave" (source also of Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally "Slav" (see Slav); so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples.
This sense development arose in the consequence of the wars waged by Otto the Great and his successors against the Slavs, a great number of whom they took captive and sold into slavery. [Klein]

the only reason i know this song is because of this guy i knew from a music camp two years ago. we were both relatively quiet at the start and we played the clarinet between the silence. he was clarinet god compared to me. he was a kind guy. when i asked him what his favorite song to play was, he responded with marche slave. henceforth, i have it written on my fingering chart so that everytime i need to look at fingerings, i see his favorite song and am reminded of all the fingerings i had to learn from him and how much he teased me for it because i was so bewildered.
havent seen him since but he still lingers in my mind.

Very few people know that this piece originally had title Serbian-Russian Marsh. This composition was inspired by the events of the Serbian-Turkish War of 1876. It was created at the request of a close friend of Tchaikovsky's, Nikolai Rubinstein, director of Musical Society, to write a work that would be performed at a charity concert of the Red Cross for the Russians wounded in this war. Tchaikovsky agreed and wrote this work in five days.
At first, the composer intended to write a symphonic fantasy, but nevertheless decided that the elements of three Serbian folk songs: "The bright sun, you do not shine equally th-cam.com/video/2oWlfcxbrFs/w-d-xo.html", "This is the doorstep of Serbia" and "Powder dust" (the second part of the song "Gladly goes Serb in soldiers" th-cam.com/video/1iDI7QdCJjI/w-d-xo.html), merged into one composition. He found the melodies in the collection of Cornelius Stankovic's "Serbian Folk Melodies", printed in Vienna in 1862, for which the Serbian composer was awarded the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus by royal decree. At the end of the composition, he used the melody of the Russian anthem "God, Guard the Tzar".
The first part of this composition describes the suffering of Serbs under Turkish occupation and war crimes in the Balkans, in which Tchaikovsky used two Serbian folk songs (with characteristic Serbian scale with augmented second). Then, followed by the second part describing the uprising of the Serbs and the gathering of Russian volunteers ready to come to the aid of their brothers. General Mikhail Chernyayev came to Serbia with several thousand volunteers, where he received Serbian citizenship and became the commander-in-chief of the Serbian army on the Moravian Front. In the battles around Aleksinac, great sacrifice was shown by Serbian soldiers. Colonel Rajevski (the prototype of Vronsky in Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina) was killed in the battle near Adrovac. His body was buried in the gate of the monastery of St. Roman in Junis The third part causes the greatest emotions of the listener because it shows the death, withdrawal and anguish of the wounded Serbia. The last, most lively part is the march of Russian volunteers!
The premiere of the Serbian-Russian Marsh was held on November 5th 1876 at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, under the conductor Nikolai Rubinstein and caused the real sensation, which grew into a patriotic event. The conductor had to repeat the work as a whole.
Three days later, on November 8, 1876, Tchaikovsky wrote a letter to his sister A.I. Davidova (to which he was very attached): "Last Saturday, my Serbian-Russian March played here, which produced a storm of patriotic mood." "All the audience got up, many jumped out of the chairs, and cheered bravely mixed with the screams."
Until then, Tchaikovsky was considered a good composer and not a very successful conductor (because of his shyness, he was visibly dull on the stage), but his Serbian-Russian march, as he always called him, definitely made him a celebrity. After a fantastic success in Moscow, this work will undergo a huge success under his conductor's stick in Europe and be included in his constant repertoire. He also performed it at the opening of the Carnegie Hall in New York.
In the first, original print, there is a title "Serbian-Russian March" and under that name this work was performed from the very beginning, but on the next Jurgenson Edition (Peter Jurgenson) as the title of the composition it says "Slavonic Marsh" and under that name, Marsh became known all over the world. It is not known for what reason this change occurred ... Perhaps because of the fear of resistance from listeners in Europe? In any case, we can only guess.
The battle for Serbia in Kosovo continues. Serbia is fighting Muslim terrorist head choppers, narco traffickers Albanian gangs returning from Syria today.

Even went to question/answer sites, wrote out the piece in musical notation, gave the key and notes that were played (I have an ok ear due to being a musician) and no one could could quite get there.
We all came the consensus that it was indeed the song from wizard of oz: "the witch is dead" but I knew there was just no way that could've played and here I am today... wonderful.

The Marche Slave in B-flat minor, Op. 31 is an orchestral composition by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky published on October 1876.
In June 1876, Serbia and the Ottoman Empire were engaged in the Serbo-Turkish War (1876-78). Russia openly supported Serbia. The Russian Musical Society commissioned an orchestral piece from Tchaikovsky for a concert in aid of the Red Cross Society, and ultimately for the benefit of wounded Serbian veterans. Many Russians sympathized with their fellow Slavs and Orthodox Christiansand sent volunteer soldiers and aid to assist Serbia.
Tchaikovsky referred to the piece as his "Serbo-Russian March" while writing it. It was premiered in Moscow on November 17. 1876., conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein.
The march is highly programmatic in its form and organization. The first section describes the oppression of the Serbs by the Turkish. It uses two Serbian folk songs, "Sunce jarko, ne sijaš jednako" (Bright sun, you do not shine equally), "Rado ide Srbin u vojnike" (Gladly does the Serb become a soldier), giving way to the second section in the relative major key, which describes the Russians rallying to help the Serbs. This is based on a simple melody with the character of a rustic dance which is passed around the orchestra until finally it gives way to a solemn statement of the Russian national anthem "God Save the Tsar".
The third section of the piece is a repeat of Tchaikovsky's furious orchestral climax, reiterating the Serbian cry for help. The final section describes the Russian volunteers marching to assist the Serbs. It uses a Russian tune, this time in the tonic major key and includes another blazing rendition of "God Save the Tsar" prophesying the triumph of the Slavonic people over tyranny.

Marche Slave (French) in English: Slavic March (Slavs are ethnolinguistic groups of people who speak the various Slavic languages of the larger Balto-Slavic linguistic group of the Indo-European language family.-from Google)
The march (military music) is highly programmatic in its form and organization. The first section describes the oppression of the Serbs by the Turks. The overture finishes with a virtuoso coda for the full orchestra.
The piece is frequently paired in performance with Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," which also quotes "God Save the Tsar." (Wikipedia)
Note: A march, as a musical genre, is a piece of music with a strong regular rhythm which in origin was expressly written for marching to and most frequently performed by a military band. (Wikipedia)
