After many years wanting a Mesa I managed to get a 2002-2003 Dual Rectifier Road King MKI. I am still awestruck when I play with this beast. Dual Recs made a name for themselves for a reason. Killer review as usual Euge!
@@TheChingazo yeah the Roadster and the Road King are the only 4 channel Rectifiers ever made. I wonder how much would they cost if they made them now.
I have a 3-channels non-multiwatt version from 2009, very loose, very muddy, with a hard-to-manage effects loop. I did a few modifications (change the gain pot of channel 3 for a 1Mohm, change a capacitor to mitigate the amount of low-end on all channels and shunt the FX loop to put it 100% in series and always ON), and now it's killer ! With any OD front, it does it well, with a lot of gain reserve, less mud, more tightness and a totally transparent & usable FX loop. But it keeps the legendary Rectifier character without the major defects. It's priceless, especially with components costing 10 euros ;-) ! Great demo Euge, as usual !!!!
Which caps you used to reduce low end? I guess it’s the cap hitting v1 preamp tube? Did you use same cap value as the one used on the rev F? Also, I suggest you try Mr Scary mod in it… I love it in all my rectos, does a killer job, without needing to replace the gain pot to 1 meg.
@@mark_iic : yeah, Mr Scary mod is killer, but not so easy to find in Europe and expensive ;-) . The capa I changed is the 1µF in parallel with the V1 1.8K cathod resistor (and in series with the 100 ohm resistor to ground). I changed it for a 0.68µF, but for more tightness it's possible to put a 0.47µF capa. But 0.68µF was enough... it works as a high-pass filter, just taming the characteristic Rectifier low-end. Of course, I always use an OD...
thank you for responding. I modded once my previous MW changing the gain pot and it worked great. I now own a rev G triple which I’m able to tame using my VFE Standout (which has a HPF) but I will also replace the cap with 0.68 (I actually had this cap ready, didn’t want to go to 0.47 like the rev F as I do like some low end the rev G offers). Also need to mod the FX loop to serial. Should do that soon. These rectos are incredible. If you manage to get a Mr Scary, I HIGHLY recommend it. I own another rev G modded by GZ, and I do prefer my stock one with Mr Scary.
I have had a number of Rectifiers and 5150 EVH/Peavey amps; the usual stuff and I have a real soft spot for my Multiwatt. It’s great boosted on the Vintage ch for more midrange and loud boosted on Modern is a treat. Not the easiest amp to play if you are used to say an EVH 5153 as it doesn’t actually have that much gain and it’s an open gain vs super saturated/compressed like an EVH. I find an SD1 works great with a quad of V30s. Plenty of girth but it’s quick enough to play fast on. I’m a big fan anyway and glad you’ve finally had time to explore one.
Erittäin hyvä vahvistin ja erinomainen demo Euge. Ostin itse käytettynä hiljattain samanlaisen. Kolmoskanavan modern-moodi toimii erinomaisesti hevihommissa. Käytännössä saundini asettui niin, että kloonaan kakkos- ja kolmoskanavat modern-moodilla ja diodeilla. Vähän vaan lisää gainia kolmoskanavaan. Buusti on kyllä pakollinen, SD-1 toimii tässäkin loistavasti.
Those TC circuit pedals can really turn any loose metal amp into a monster. Krank, Bogner you name it. I like the Rectos with it too but also like rectos with the SD1 with tone and level maxed and just a touch of gain on the pedal, and the gain on the recto dialed to about about noon to 1 o clock. Any higher on the gain and it gets a lot flubbier faster and you really need those extra lows dialed out.
I love my Duel Rec, I tend to use it more than my Mark V. I tighten it up with a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe in the front of the amp and an MXR 10 band eq in the loop. BIG wall of sound coming out of my oversized Mesa 412.
Finally you embrace the Recto, Euge! Glad you made it work for your playing style after all these years! You really should try an old 2 channel, they are very different!
Mesa always makes there amps very unconventional verses most other amps where you can easily get a good tone in about a minute, but Mesa you gotta sometimes read the manual to get a good understanding of how their amps works! I remember playing one in 96' as a teen didn't like it because I didn't know a thing about how dual rectifiers worked and just bought a 5150 instead because of ease of use to get a nice metal tone! in 2009 for some reason I came across a Voodoo modded 2ch dual rect for $1500 and just blindly bought and when I hooked it up for the first time and just set the tone controls to like how I set my 5150's and I was blown away by how good it sounded!!! Now in 2024 I own 9 rectos!!! lol \m/ Great vid and welcome to the Mesa family \m/
Great review and play through. Years ago Cannibal Corpse used a Boss Metal Zone or Keeley modded Metal Zone for a boost. I tried it with my Mesa Triple Rec multi watt and I love it.🤘🏻
Damn, I absolutely love your reviews! You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite TH-camrs. Your ability to approach gear from both a studio and live perspective is incredibly insightful and valuable. And of course, your amazing playing is the icing on the cake! Quick question-are you able to test the Revv G20, G50, and 120?
The output control if I am not mistaken (if it works like my Roadster), you can toggle between having the loop in or bypassed through a mini toggle on the rear panel. With the loop engaged, you can even play around with the balance between the masters of each channel and the overall output. One trick I like to employ is to reduce the master just a hair, then compensate using the output control
Love my 3 Channel Multiwatt. I run mine with EL34s in the Power Section, Its Subtle but it changes the Feel of the Amp. Best boost Pedal is Pepers Pedal Dirty Tree on Channel 2, Modern Setting. Liechlaerm Audio Medusa on channel 3 Modern Setting for Death Metal. Traditional size Cab or a Front Loaded Cab with V30s to tighten up that Low End.
Crazy, I just picked up a multiwatt dual rec last weekend! Love it. Would be great to hear you mix the dual rec with either that 800 or plexi. My absolute favorite amp blend/combo
Always love how they sound when other people play them but my playing just responds better with a mid-forward amp. I've never been able to navigate the big scooped EQ of the Recto even with a boost out front.
Just for info if you want one Euge: in Germany they can be found quite cheap. I picked my MW mesa recftifier up for 1.3k. Completely mint. And i see those kinds of prices often.
Thanks! I found one from early 2000s here in Switzerland with OS cab from 1994. Pretty awesome! The amps is maintenanced atm but the cab works great: - th-cam.com/video/95NJqB6ytZM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dFyc_-PTf0heZTx5 - th-cam.com/video/QhLBZpCKGSY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Xq7UB6Ih5a2sOK2w
Did Euge actually said Vintage and now Wintage!? 😋, good to see a Dual Rec on your channel! yeah they are a different beast! I sold mine and got a VHT pitbull (back in 94!) after that "Helmet aftertaste tone", tooootally not understanding what the DR tone was about! Getting another DR 2025! 😁
While I'm a JCM 800 and Mark V fan, this is definitely inspiring me to get an OG Rectifier to complement the Badlander 50 I've got. Those are some killer sounds you're getting!
Your Dual Rectifier review/demo was a long time coming! Great to see you rocking one of these. I love Rectos and JCMs almost alike. Always enjoy your videos by the way. What's the bridge pickups in your Tokay Strat?
Have a Boogie V-Twin tube preamp and a Throttle Box Preamp Dist/EQ going into each their own channel of a Peavey Classic 50/50 Dual Mono Block EL84 into a compact stereo Peavey 412 with G12t-75-bottom/PV Blue Marvels-top boosted with a Laney Steelpark. Combined they sound like a Lone Star, a Dual Rec and a Mark V having a party. Glorious sound.
Please consider doing a video on the TC Electronic ampworx pedals. They're quite impressive and more affordable that full on amps. Dual rec, 5150 and JCM800 all have pedal versions.
Euge, it would be nice if you could try to blend Dual Rectifier and JCM 800. Kirk Hammet from Metallica said that he uses this amp blend for his sound...so...it would be cool to check this out! Cheers! 🤘
That's my main amp for almost everything. It's in no way a one-trick pony, so versatile. Ch1 cleans are really nice, Ch 2 rocks in vintage mode, and well Ch 3 is the recto humpf sound in a nutshell. To tame it, I use a MXR M77 Modified OD (100 Hz pot at 11 o'clock). It makes it shine in a mix. I never felt the need to try a TC preamp, but you convinced me to test it. In regards of this, did you ever use a Lichtlaerm Aesahaettr ? Thanks, Euge 👍
I bought a DR in 2000 and was so disappointed. I just could never get it to cooperate with me when I tried to play leads. It was like pulling a train with each note. I sold it and eventually found out that the Mark series is my thing.
I've got the same Dual Rec, I've never really gotten along with it that well... it's a good amp but I can't make it sound as tight as my other amps. I was considering getting the Mr scary mod to solve that problem but It's a tad pricey.
Nothing like waking up to a Rectifier in the morning. Today is gonna be a good day.

I have the Roadster. Similar to the Road King without some features. I love this amp. Puts a smile on my face every time I turn it on.
@@TheChingazo yeah the Roadster and the Road King are the only 4 channel Rectifiers ever made. I wonder how much would they cost if they made them now.
@@ioannisstavropoulos4319 no idea why they stopped making them. You can find a good sound on all 4 channels.
@@TheChingazo my thoughts are that they were very complex and expensive to make. I mean in Europe as Euge said a Dual Rec nowadays costs 3,5K to 4K.

Interesting. I've got one of those from 2008. Did you do those mods yourself? Perhaps you could make a video about it 😉

Thanks for the review and honest opinion. It’s refreshing to see a Rectifier review where it’s not being compared to an older Rectifier revision.
I have this amp and love it 🥰. Nice to see/hear you playing it.

Could very well be.
Can you make a video explaining how to run 3 amps at the same time? To get Adam Jones guitar sound.
How to tweak the frequencies to sit well

To work at its best a Mesa Dual Rec needs its Mesa Oversize cabinet.
Killer
That Peppers pedals Dirty Tree is suppose to be killer with those recto amps too.
Kinda the same pedal as the detonator
I feel single rectifier is more aggressive than dual, easy to dial & cranked-up fast. Dual rectifier so muddy & flabby wreck-low.
Euge......Hiss from high gain amps....I use Colossal Cables......Brooklyn!
Absolutely can not stand that speaker, the worst speaker celestion makes in my opinion, but this doesn’t too bad.
