I'm an Englishman who has been driving Land Rovers products for over twenty years and can honestly say there is no place more comfortable to be.... ....whilst waiting for a tow truck! AND WE STILL KEEP BUYING THE DAMN THINGS!
@@gentelmenschannel5028 Not anymore BMW engines have weak timing chains & guides on all models also fitted at rear of engine very clever idea and expensive engine out fix / and Audi have weak oil pumps which fail . No we English know the french make the best engines in Europe That's why BMW & Ford used them on older Diesel Mini/ Mondeo /Focus /Transit
OMG that old gold one used to be ours! My husband resurrected it from the dead, replacing pretty much everything. He keeps records of everything ever done to the car, hence the stack of papers that came with it. He sold it to a guy in Andover who your buddy bought it from. If you ever want to sell it back to us we'd buy it back. My husband wishes he had never sold it. Seriously.
Steve Smith That's the old 911 rule :D But fortunatly they carrying ridiculous high amount of oil in them, so if 1 liter is missing, you have another 11 :D
Old range rovers caddies bmws ir mercs from any pmace with buy here pay here in business name. Youll buy here and pay. Dearly. The briggs and stratton one tho. Made me chuckle lol
Having watched a number of videos on Land Rover’s, I think one video about Land Rover as a company summed it up really well. Therefore, I have the follow summary to share for consideration. Apologies for the length but I hope this makes sense. Land Rover are a specialist 4x4 car maker. Each model of car designed and produced has been engineered separately and they don’t share too many parts across the range like mainstream car manufacturers do. Therefore, when the parts wear out most replacements are often specific for the car in some cases more expensive than your run of the mil mainstream car company and you most likely will use a specialist. Land Rover don’t have a global manufacturing infrastructure with access to Billions of dollars in funding for research and development like mainstream. Land Rover don’t have thousands of factories making millions of cookie cut cars sharing all the parts for cost reduction. Land Rover is not a white goods car maker, they are luxury, small and unique. Land Rover often take more risks adding new technology and capability to their cars before any other brand has tried it out. This is why there are “Land Rover Specialists” out there supporting the brand and brands like Ford, Nissan and Toyota etc don’t have specialists, just mainstream garages. Land Rover’s uniqueness will make them more high maintenance that you’re average brand. Should Land Rover vehicles have major safety defects which could injure or cost the lives of their customer, they don’t have access to Billions $ in funds to pay for lawyers to keep this quite and make it all go away!, like some mainstream car have had this happen. Land Rover have never had this issue. Land Rover cannot be compared to makes such as Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan etc etc. These brands are comparable to themselves across their range of, Sedans, Sports and 4x4 models. Land Rover does not sit within this bracket of car manufacturers. Even VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes are bigger firms than LR with closer products to Land Rover. So, if you want a car for greater reliability, cheap fix’s and lower maintenance, don’t buy a unique car like a Land Rover. Head out to a mainstream car company and buy one every 3-5 years like they want you to, problem solved. However, if you want something very unique and different and are prepared to use a specialist and spend more $ on maintenance each year and drive something special, then maybe Land Rover ownership is for you. However, knowing what you’re getting yourself into. A motoring journalist said once, think of Land Rovers as owning a “mini Bentley”. Pretty true. Love or Hate them, make your choice. However, comparing them to a mainstream car is not an argument. If you love them and want to spend more time and money than on your average car, then thats great if it makes you happy. Thats what life is about. Being happy. However, if you don’t like them and think they are bad, simply don’t buy one. If you’re happiness is different to others, being that you don’t want to have to think about or worry about your car then thats you’re place to be. There is no right or wrong with the Land Rover brand. It’s just a lifestyle choice.
That Range Rover classic won't be too much work or expense to fix. The rust is a bigger concern than the mechanical work. Sort it out and you i have a great off-road workhorse.
my thought exactly, the old buick engine is pretty easy to fix. Nothing really computerized. As long as the engine isn't destroyed it can all be rebuilt. The rust is the concern. The L322 the issue is buying one from the BMW era. If it was an 06 or 07 with the Jag engine it's a different story. Early 2000's land rovers were really bad, quality control was terrible even on the old school V8's the ones from 2000 just fall to bits when one from the early 90's held up better, and the BMW engine was trash and their electronics weren't much better. A 2007 or 2008 L322 or RR Sport or Disco 3 is worthwhile while car to buy, it's not a toyota but if you treat it well it still has some life left. The other problem with most Range Rovers is they are not well maintained, first the maintenance guidance from LR is terrible, they have the owners not changing diff oil or transfer case until 75k miles(IMHO a really bad idea at 40k miles the stuff is clapped out), they never have the trans fluid changed(it's a good idea to do it at 75k miles, all these cars with the ZF 6 speeds start to leak around 100k miles anyway so get the pan dropped to address it early). Even oil changes are not frequent enough. Couple that with the difficulty of some of the jobs on the car and the astronomical prices charged by dealers and land rover specialists and these cars are frequently beaten up once they reach high mileage. Just wait that 140k Range rover will go to p*ss as well. Land rover and their 10k or 12k mile oil changes on that 5L with the weak timing chain guides and a supercharger. Change the oil every 5k miles in that car and just maybe the engine makes it past 100k miles, oh and I love land rovers specific oil where they basically have their own spec which is really just ACEA A/B spec that they charge $15-20 a quart for! The fact that they still recommend this interval on their diesels with the DPF floors me, the car suffers from fuel dilution the oil will exceed the full mark before the computer says the car needs service, just change it every 5k miles with Acea C2 oil, which actually stands up better to the fuel dilution than the rover spec oil for the TDI, heck most ford F150 folks with the same engine are using rotella T6 5w40 rather than the low saps 5w30 euro oil. Land rover wants these cars to fall to bits hence the bizarre non-service recommendations. You spend 100 grand on a truck you should put the money in to make sure it runs well!
You should never buy any used Land Rover / Range Rover, (unless you're a diehard fan that doesn't care about pricey repairs). I used to own a transmission shop years ago, and I tried to fix a customer's Freelander that was having issues with a transmission control sensor. The factory refused to sell one, and instead tried to sell me a whole new transmission for about 5 grand, (my cost!). Fortunately, I was calling around and found a salvage yard that just acquired a wrecked Freelander. Well, I picked up that sensor and got him going for a few hundred dollars; needless to say he was ecstatic, and called the factory to gloat about it... Would you believe that Land Rover had the nerve to call me that day, and demand to know the source of where I found the parts for that vehicle? Imagine what my response was!
That's pretty astonishing that an OEM would try such underhanded tricks. They're like apple who only sells parts to the certified shops that pay them a bunch every year. I bet they would sell the part to a dealership.
If there isn't any more to this story (and I have no reason to believe it is) that behavior from Land Rover is absolutely outragous! You should ask a papper to write a story about it and have Land Rover explain themselves!
Joakim Quensel Believe me, I had numerous reasons to go public at the time, (and not just about Land Rover). Even other shop owners I knew, felt the same. But in reality, I knew I stood a snowball's chance in hell, that any media outlet would take me on. Why? Understand that the Cash For Clunkers campaign had already gone into fruition, and was put into full swing. As a result, guys like me found themselves as victims & cannon fodder on the wrong side of the political spectrum. The big auto manufacturers bankrolled the whole fiasco and all the necessary politicians, (including Obama himself) to push the incentive. With all that in place, who would think that the media would ever put any news out that could hurt the status quo?
@@genxmurse7019 OK I live in Sweden so I don't really know what went on in US at that time but it still really pisses me off to hear stuff like this! I get so frustrated when you as a small customer gets screwed by a big company acting like assholes but you can do nothing! I had issues in Sweden with Mercedes not taking responsability for the rust problems they had on cars around year 2000 even though they had 30 years rust warranty (at least in Europe, dont't know about US). After beeing a loyal Mercedes customer all my adult life having purchased a €60,000+ car.
When I was a student in Birmingham UK I used to live nearby Jaguar Land Rover factory, most of my roommates worked there so I had a chance to hear all those stories from the factory. It was unbelievable, missing screws because they had no time to put them in and the system was already pushing the unit further so they had to stop assembling, and yet the units with plenty of missing screws missing were passing through the quality control lol. Plenty of stories like that. I almost ended up there on engineering apprenticeship, but the best lesson I had was "never buy a land rover product".
I love my Range Rover. I have had both models featured here in Australian specification and with a diesel engine and they have been incredibly reliable. They do need yearly maintenance, which costs about AUD$1000 as they are complex. However mine has taken the family almost around Australia, through the Murray River (and out the other side) and to the snowfields and back plus tows our 30 foot long trailerable yacht as well as launching and retrieving it. Whilst the examples in the video are not good, they haven't been looked after either and so they are broken. Fixable but currently broken and that is the past owners fault, not the original product.
Even the most educated Land Rover enthusiast won't outright disagree with you about the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is only offered in America at one price, one option level, and not at the spec sold worldwide to make it "to and from the jungle". You won't see a Land Cruiser with cloth seats, plastic handles, or absent of the bells and whistles. The amount of engineering that has gone into the Land Cruiser is exquisite and does deserve many accolades. Although, a brand new Land Cruise and a brand new LR4 / Discovery would perform equally or slightly better than one another. The Land Rover offering more options. If we were to get the Land Cruiser the rest of the world gets, aka, a base model...it would be much more approachable than an 80k Cruiser or higher priced Lexus variant. NO OTHER TOYOTA MODEL IS ENGINEERED THE SAME AS THE LAND CRUISER. Not the 4Runner, not any of the other SUVs they sell. Google "Why The Toyota Land Cruiser Is So Expensive" and the first article does a pretty good job of summing it all up.
I bought my '95 RRC a year ago, and I have dumped a lot of money into it, but it runs beautifully now. Lots of problems in the first six months to cure the neglect of prior owners, but no problems in the last 6 months. It's a simple, old V8 and I've been able to teach myself to do a lot of the repairs and maintenance. I love it. Considering purchasing and installing a new 4.6L to keep it going longterm. Working on it on weekends is a great antidote to the office.
The Australians have a saying. If you want to drive into the outback, take a Landroverover. If you want to come back, take a Landcruiser. I'm sure the position is similar for Range Rovers.
@@jochenstacker7448 I'd be ok with a new or well maintained RR. only thing that makes me nervous are airbags...wouldn't want one to go pop in a remote area. But that's the same concern for any 4x4 with airbags..not just a RR or Disco.
I agree with you not to buy a range Rover after 1996 as there are too many electronics to deal with but the older classic range rovers are fairly simple to work on, an exhaust gasket will cost about 10 dollars and a steering box about 200, tidy up the bodywork for about 1000 and 50c to fix the front grill on, that's a lot less than a new one at 100,000 dollars that will also go wrong after a few years, same old story, order vehicles are easier to fix and more reliable, this is why so many relatively newer vehicles are being crushed at a young age, be smart and drive and maintain a good classic and the resale value will go up instead of down.
The 2006-2008 models were actually quite reliable, they had Jaguar engines(made by ford). But I agree with everything else you said about them. The models I talked about are pretty much the only exception Edit: just realized they were talking about Range Rovers, not Land Rover Discoveries.
Yeah, the Ford years are good for discovery series, though I still wouldn't buy a RR as they are more complicated, more electronic, and way unreliable to a disco3/lr3. You people will probably say oh but they're the same, as an owner of a 06 lr3 with the v8, no they are not the same as the RR.
The Range Rovers with BMW drivetrain are notoriously bad. The main issue with Range Rovers is people buy them for $15k and expect $15k car problems instead of $100k car problems. Most problems can be predicted, and over the years they've gotten better and better. The air compressor switched from Hitachi to AMK, the air struts have gotten better, etc. And, for some reason, the LR3/LR4s are miles more reliable than the Range Rovers.
My neighbor had one, too. Broke down the first time when driving it home from the dealer on the day of purchase. Sort of down hill after that! But the interior was very nice.
Jeb Bush I can hear Car Max owners fretting at the idea of an extended warranty on any used Range Rover or other European high line car they’re selling to some poor guy who knows his stuff about these unreliable beauties. Always get an extended warranty on a used luxury car or truck like a Range Rover or Jaguar.
Got 165K on my '06 Rover (purchased in '08). Reliable as heck. Had to replace that lcd on the dash, but other than that, incredibly reliable/problem free. Air ride struts need to be replaced after 80K, but there are lifetime warranty aftermarket replacements that work great (only a total tool would swap out air ride for springs). I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used Rover - but I'd suggest a 2 year lease return vehicle where everything is still under warranty; where most nagging service issues have been resolved by initial lessor and lots of depreciation has occurred.
What you don't realize is that the 2006 IS reliable ... Just like the new gen l405 the 2013 isn't that good but the 2014-2015 are the most reliable range rovers ever ... You just gotta let them figure out the problems ... See, the 2018 is know for lots of trouble but I bet the 2019 will be alright ... I do not own it but I drive a 2014 autobiography a lot since 2 yrs we only got a small problem with the radio and we put tons of miles on it
Nice to see someone point out the obvious to other posters, I get pissed off with vids moaning about reliability when its a cheap fix... gasket and a couple of screws from where the previous owner took the grille off and lost them, reflects more on poor ownership than the vehicle.. I would be embarrassed to leave my car like that.
Oh yea, I'm from New England: I figured that it would be a rusted out header before I thought about the gasket. Even then, pretty cheap to clean it up and weld a patch on.
The manifolds on RR are pretty solid, plenty on fleebay. More likely a gasket or duff plug.. "thought it was a Country not County" clue is in the word... says it all about their general awareness to most things, think I will stick to "fix it" rather than "bitch it" vids! Sorry Hoovie but these vids all sound the same.
@@jamesmacdonald3090 you said it right. I admired Hoovie when he started with his first vids, but it's all getting the same now, complaints and complaints all over the place. Just get some tools and start repairing things yourself rather than bitching around. And man, that grille is disaster, 2 screws and less than 2 minutes would have fixed it already. I would really appreciate a video when you try to fix things your own on the cheap, not be cheap when you buy cars, cheapest of the cheapest and then whine about that.
The bolts will be very hard to remove because of the constant 'hot/cold' expansion of the metal + Land Rover made the bolts out of cheese, they snap almost instantly. It's a pain in the ass to remove the exhaust manifold on these money pits. I doubt that this car has a 'simple' exhaust leak. Sounds more like loss of compression via the sparkplug. Cheers
I brought one, and 10 yrs later still trying to retore it, every time I think I'm done new problems comes up, I finlay sold the dam thing to someone like you. It's good we have you, dummies, out there
Lol he responded to that in the rolls videos comments. His had such bad luck with mics with them not recording and he doesn't no that until his editing and then realised his vid is useless. So he has a voice recorder with a mic then syncs to vid later.
My brother just got his first car a few months ago. A 1995 Land Rover discovery. So far it’s been perfectly fine the only thing it’s needed is a new water pump because the original one finally broke when it got to 260,000kms on it.
The power steering lines are a quick fix. Replacing them are fairly easy on that 1995. The exhaust leak @chrisfix has a quick fix on his channel for that. The head gasket would be the most challenging fix.
@Michael Duffy I did look into it, seems pretty easy the low pressure/return line is super easy and the high pressure really wasn't hard. Exhaust leak is the issue for sure!
I bought an old RR some 25 years ago. It was cheap, and I knew I would have to work a bit on it, which was not a problem... I thought... after having had several jeeps and other SUV's that would constantly break down. So... my philosophy was: If it turns out it will be good, I will eat my own words of the past and be happy that it actually worked. If it turns out to be complete shit, I will be happy about always having been right about RR's, and its not that much I'm throwing at it. VERY long story made short (I could go on for at least an hour describing all the crap it caused)... After purchasing it, it worked for around 4 km's. The driver side front wheel came off. Stored it outside a farmhouse for a week, went to pick it up once I had new wheels lug nuts and bolts for attaching the wheel. Tried to start it. Didn't move at all, the engine was frozen (winter time in Iceland)... no anti freeze on the engine block. Had to get a new radiator and engine block taps (which had blown out) Thawed the car in the farmer's garage for a couple of days Returned, started it up and headed home. Just outside the town I lived, I decided to drive into a very small sandy knoll... SLOWLY... so said, so done. That resulted in the steering arm (going from the steering box to the right front wheel) bent into a U. With the car crippled, front wheels heading in opposite directions, I limped the car to my house, into the garage. Got a new steering arm.... while waiting for it, I decided to try and fix the electrical issues in the car. That is a nightmare I am not getting into... things were burned to charcoal different places. Removed the valve covers... found out these were not valve covers, but rather cat litter box covers... under there everything was sandy gooey sticky thick shit... I used a spatula and big screwdrivers to try and remove all of the crap... ended up with almost 2 kg of this sandy mess. Put in some engine wash chemical and let the engine run... changed the "oil"... washed it again with engine wash chemical on the inside of it... removed the "oil" again and it was pure filth. Decided to go with a good blend of Slick50 with new motor oil.... it started leaking immediately. Went on my FIRST drive after getting the car to my garage after buying it... a drive of around 50km's. When I arrived to the capital city of Reykjavik, I stopped at the first tank station to refill the engine with oil, because it had been running dry for a few kilometers. Opened up the hood, a storm was upon us and a gust of strong wind ripped the hood out of my hands, it came crashing down on the top of the windshield and broke it. I laughed. Went to a shopping center, did my shopping. Back to the Range Rover and as I was about to get out of the parking lot, it jumped out of High range drive. No way to put it back and let it stay there. Had my passenger to pull the lever and hold it in High. Stopped at the last restaurant before leaving the city, had a pizza, called my brother and told him to come and pick us up if we had not arrived in 2 hours, since the car would probably be dead by then. This was before cell-phone times, so I called from a public phone, no way to call after that. Drove off from the parking lot of the pizza place, and then it was impossible to hold the lever for High range in place, and now it was necessary for my passenger to kick it into Low range and with all of his strength keep it there. We got about 15km's outside the city, and by then it was not possible to drive the Royal Shit any more... didn't want to go into High or Low range at all. The oil was totally gone, but thanks to the Slick 50, the engine was still running and keeping us hot inside the cabin while a crazy storm was raging outside. I decided to remove all things of value before I would abandon the royal shit once and for all... so I pulled out the radio. My brother finally arrived, and I was truly glad to be free from this piece of crap. Never will I be able to recommend anyone to buy a Range Rover or a Land Rover or a Rover or ANYTHING coming from that brand. It is the worst crap ever made... and I have been around for long enough to know.
John Burns because the car he bought, the one that allegedly wasn’t properly maintained was an absolute piece of shit. Surely you can’t blame all that went wrong with that turd to lack of maintenance. I’ve seen Plenty if vehicles mistreated for years which never fall apart like that!
One does not buy an old Landy to be cheap... one buys one because of refined taste in offroad capable chariots of royal aesthetic appeal. One must have ample resources to maintain the magnificent beast, true; however no SUV approaches the duality that is beauty and capability of a Disco or Defender. One of modest means may well consider the maintenance equivocal to a monthly payment on a car. In short an old Land Rover is the vehicle of an Adventure; one who fears no leak, lives by the three amigos, and has superb confidence of finance.
Military Museum No, it doesn’t. General Motors North America does. That is according to the International Car Warranty Association, 2017. Ford USA are second.
RA. That link has nothing to do with warranties. If anything it shows if you ask the right questions you can manipulate who gets on top of a survey. Plus it was just for the first 3 yrs. Most all cars do just fine the mechanically first three years.
Got an L322 a bit newer than Hoovies. Just came back from a trip from Stockholm via Germany, down to Corsica criss-crossing all the twisty roads up and down mountains day out, day in for a week, then down to Sardinia, ditto and back up mainland Italy and back to Sweden. The only problem I had was losing sync with the remote key. They have some powerful transmitters in some harbours, which I suspects saturates the RF input stage, so the key will go out of sync, when you furiously try to get the car to lock (or unlock) But I have the TDV8 and give it a full service at half the recommended service interval. It's cheaper than having to replace the turbos. ...and it was the cheapest 2008 L322 TDV8 in Europe, when I bought it in Munich three years ago. :-) Re-syncing the key is easy, btw. Acc1, remove key, press unlock while pressing lock three times. Click-clack and back in business.
Don't worry, those miles will catch up with your car from what I've learned working on them. Sad too and they should be amazing cars. There's no reason in the world that a car should be unreliable in this age of design. My suzuki grand vitara has been shockingly reliable and durable, and I feel my '05 land cruiser will be the same, and last a hell of a lot longer.
Hey the RR Classics aren't all that bad if you treat them right all the time. They're more reliable than those mid-00's ones or a Freelander in most cases.
to this day I have yet to understand why cheap cars are more reliable than expensive cars shouldn't it be the other way around??. as an owner of a 07 Toyota Tacoma (157k) miles, 94 Honda (233k miles) Accord, and 98 Honda Civic (200k miles) I have to say they are the best most reliable cars ever, Meanwhile some of my friends driving more expensive European cars are always stressing because of how unreliable their cars are. one day I would really like to ask a European luxury car engineer why my cars work better and will last longer than their $100,000 cars
Simple rich people can afford the upkeep of those expensive cars poor people cant and cars companys are straight up con artists need more info check cracked honest ads if car companys were honest
I always wonder this, too. Like more expensive clothes, handbags, etc... are usually more expensive because the material used is of better quality. So, why is that not the same when it comes to cars? I mean, it probably is in terms of materials, but not in reliability. Always having electronic and mechanical issues.
bjorn Olson that's what I was thinking. like imagine buying a Gucci shirt and it rips after a few uses, or buying an expensive Rolex watch and it stops working every 2 months and you have to keep paying to get it fixed lol people would stop buying them and would get angry and the companies would ruin their reputation. but for some weird reason with cars everyone seems to be ok with it and don't care that a 25 thousand dollar Accord or Corolla will outlast their fancy luxury car by a lot.
i think the answer is pretty simple...expensive cars have more stuff crammed in them, thats been recently developed and hasnt had decades to iron out all the kinks, hence they break more frequently (think bmw idrive in the 7 series or the mercedes hydraulic suspension in the s classes of the early 2000s). notice its usually the electronic stuff that ends up getting screwed up rather than mechanical.
Jose: yeah, it never makes sense to me either. People will still keep buying the cars. The craziest is the gwagon. I mean, the 2019 is updated, but anyone prior is filled with parts from their cheapest models instead on par with their s class models yet they get 120k and up for them. Although, I think the reliability on them is better than most of their cars, but yeah all other luxury car brands, even rolls Royce and Bentley, are horrible for reliability. I can't imagine paying 300k or more for a car that can't even make it to 50k or 100k without having major issues.
I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me! A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
Thanks. Was going to buy one. Think I'll stick with my landcruiser. The only thing I've changed on it in last two years are the batteries. Built like a tank. And in all honesty looks better than most range rovers
That same engine is in my 2002 E39 BMW 540i, and the BMW 740i, and in a Bentley Green Label, and in your Range Rover - maybe other vehicles...??? When I say my prayers at night, I ask the Lord for another day of my timing chain guides not turning into a mess of melted jelly beans at the bottom of my oil pan, and for my Vanos system to hold together, and for the valley pan not to leak, and for my cooling system to not crack or explode, and for my..... it goes on. It's still fun to drive. People who buy old, used German and English cars must have masochistic tendencies.
Wow, I had the same E39. Beautiful car. When in good shape, wonderful to drive. When you mentioned the cooling system, it reminded me of the time I had just pulled in and parked it in the garage after a 300ish mile trip. Unloaded suitcase, went inside the house, then 5 minutes later. BOOOM! sound from the garage. No idea what it was, went into the garage and the coolant reservoir had exploded. It got me home at least. I let go of it a couple years later.
Growing up in the UK, I had family members and friends that have had Land Rover group products, and I can assure you all that this is indeed sage advice. Take heed.
Hitler's body was still warm when Land Rover / Range Rover first started out. And 70 years later they still can't get it right. I've heard stories about brand new Range Rovers leaving the dealership and breaking down before it makes it home for the first time. Even Chrysler can't top that.
I have a Range Rover. Luckily mine is quite ok, for a vehicle that has an equivalent of 8 orbits around the equator on the odometer. But I also know that the Discovery 3 had something like 20% engine failures within three months. My strategy when buying a car, is to get one with quite high milage. Then you know that it has been rolling and not spent a lot of time on a lift at a Land Rover garage.
Taking a public poll Bought a 2006 RR HSE SPORT for $2k with 147k miles and in perfect condition. No faults, no leaks and has been serviced. The only thing in needs as of now is new tires within the year. Question is, keep or sell?
Those 95 and old Range Rovers are becoming more and more classic due to their age and proper boxy look. I wish if it was still possible to find one with that price
These things only need to be "reliable" for the 3 years (approx 60k) that the original (rich) owners keep them before upgrading. Still plenty of warranty issues, but by and large most of the problems with these '3-year-cars' are the next buyers' problem... and where the parts suppliers/dealerships/mechanics make the real $$$ - Moral of the story? Buy Toyota/Lexus, because reliability is a point of pride for Japanese firms AND their employees. The Euro's make desirable cars, they just don't make 'em to last. Great video BTW son!
Toyota is garbage? So, what is Range Rover, pls? Which planet are U from? At least, people's experiences have been shared to show which brand is a shit box!
I bought a used 2002 range rover back in 2008. The car was a blessing. Superior craftsmanship inside and out. I put over 160,000 miles on it ending with 240,000 miles. Had to replace the air suspension bags and a couple of things but nothing major. The car still runs. A friend of mine bought the same as the white car above 2003 version and it fell apart. That is when they changed the styling / engineering on the car. So range rover isn’t all awful you just need to have knowledge as to which ones to buy.
The P38's are a dream when you give them the proper TLC! I bought my 2000 4.6HSE 5 months ago and have put near 8,000 miles on it since. Like i always say it's just not the car for you if you don't have the will or ability to give it the maintenance it needs.
Honestly, if you buy a Land Rover, then you cannot hold the same standards of reliability as you can for other vehicles. BUT, if you take care of them, and you properly service and maintain them, they will never give up on you. You can't find a problem and think "oh I'll get it fixed in the next service," because that simply won't work out for you 😁
Actually never buy any luxury car periode, they will become money pit weather you buy a brand new one or used they will have endless money pit, here watch Scotty Kilmer channel and you can learn more.
I bought a used 06 range rover and it runs like a charm all you have to do is regular maintenance like anything else and any vehicle will last for a long time to come. Ive had my range for 5 years now anf onlu replaced the battery and front air shocks so far
I'm thinking of buying a used 06 RR Sport HSE I recently saw for sale... $5800. 155000 miles. Only visible problem I saw was the suspension light and based on all the research I've been reading it seems like that is something that occurs on all of them at some point. Just curious if that's worth the price if I can pay another $1000-$1200 to get that suspension issue resolved. Everything else worked fine and body was in great shape and normal wear and tear in the interior.
@@exclusivedjcompany Why would you want to go through that? A used Range Rover isn't going to impress anyone. Well, maybe a few for a very short time.. but that novelty fades quick. You really need to think if all that headache, agony, and money is worth it. Don't do it. Think of it this way. Relationship with a supermodel will not work out for a common man. Only the true wealthy can pull it off. Don't try to "look" rich, because doing so will make you poor. And a Range Rover will make sure you go poor fast.
There is one major advantage in owning an RR. Every f...ing "car" guy you meet is an all out Land Rover expert! They can tell you all about what is wrong with it or what is about to go wrong with it. They can also give an in depth review of you personality. Short version is usually that your stupid or want to "look" rich...or both. We are BLESSED I tell you! BLESSED!!! Hallelujah!! :-)
My biggest piece of advice is Only buy a Range Rover if you can afford it Brand new. If you can't, then you simply can't afford it. Never buy a used Cheap Range just to impress people around you.
A new Range Rover comes with more problems than a used one, I explain: In a used one, its owner already experienced all the problems of this vehicle and had to solve them. In a new one, he will have to go through all the stages to solve all the problems that come from the Range Rover and that have never been solved: constant electronic faults, pneumatic suspension pump, injection system faults. Range Rovers are luxurious, beautiful, but of mediocre quality, the last good model was the P38.
Range rover whatever new or old. Just make no sense of purchase. Tata now own them and right now they focus on Jaguar. You have to really like them for face all the problem and cost.
There’s plenty of faults with the P38 too. Slipped liners, catching fire, EAS driver problems, fuse box issues due to the fan blower relays getting too hot and cooking the contacts. Relays on the power board of the BECM failing, blend motors in the HEVAC, immobilisers going out of sync. I could go on and on but I still love my 96 model. If you know how to fix them they are cheap to run. These two seem a bit mechanically challenged and don’t want to get their hands dirty.
I guess I got lucky with my 2008 RR Sport. Bought in 2014 with 30k mi, now has 85k and I’ve never had any issue. Just normal maintenance, new tires and brake pads. Other than that it’s been perfect.
Like Saint Pierre White says (experienced overland journalist): "If you want a car in wich to spend a lot of money, to spend a lot of time in the work shop, wich will need to replace almost everything in it, and to be a constant hassle. Range Rover is the car for you! However if you want a car to last you a lifetime and that requires very low maintenance: buy a Toyota."
Both can be fixed by a competent home mechanic. That classic could be sorted relatively cheaply - and if maintained correctly could give another 172,000 miles service. The tailgate is easily replaceable . Years of neglect have obviously taken it's toll - but that's the fault of the previous owners, not down to the vehicle. I expected the guy in the pink to say "Life, er, finds a way", at the fact that classic is still alive, despite everything it's obviously been through. The main problem I've found, here in the UK at least, is that people buy a second , third, or fourth hand Range Rover for lemonade money forgetting it's a (usually tired) luxury vehicle that comes with Champagne maintenance and service costs. The older it gets, the more frequently services need to be done to keep it in good shape. They skimp on services and service items as they're expensive and wait until something goes wrong, which costs them more to sort in the long run than if they had done it in the first place , then they shift it on, forever berating it as unreliable. It's bought by the next idiot who wants to pretend he's Lord of the Manor, or a Gangsta and the cycle goes on. It gets to 150000 + miles, all the time getting more neglected by an owner who is reluctant to spend any money on it due to age and mileage. It's psychological. If a new part is needed and costs £2000 to sort , but the vehicle has 150K on the clock and you only paid £5k for it, you'd shift it on rather than shell out the money. Get as much as you could for it and the next bloke finds himself with a high mileage Range Rover that's a money pit which he blames on the vehicle, tells all who'll listen, and the old "wouldn't buy one of those pieces of unreliable junk", stereotype of the Land Rover brand does the rounds down the pub - again. Despite the fact it's on 150K. Conveniently forgetting they sold their Ford the year before as it started costing an arm and a leg, only covering 98,000 miles and failing another MOT....for exactly the same reason the Range Rover is now in it's predicament - poor maintenance ! Meanwhile, the Enthusiast quietly gets on with it. Cossets his (or her) Land/Range Rover and it's taken to shows where it's winning prizes for the highest miler vehicle there. (not really, but in enthusiasts hands , they do tend to be more reliable for longer). I have to agree with Jeff Goldblum and his mate, above. Don't under any circumstance, buy an old high mile Range Rover. No matter how cheap . At this age and mileage - Range Rovers re best left for the enthusiasts who understand them and their high maintenance.
First gen Range Rovers like that ‘95, but from the 70s & 80s in particular are collectible classics now, over in the UK & Europe anyway. 70s versions in good order are going for crazy money nowadays.
potatochobit not as much as mint early Range Rovers. I saw one on sale in a classic car mag going for over £70000 or about $92000. I don’t think any 70s era Honda fetches those kind of numbers. Land Rover are building a batch of continuation models now for around £120000 ($157000) I think.
NorthAmerican Auto the first ones where not suvs they where full off-road 4x4 cars the defender of instants was used by the British army NOW THERE SHITE
Joseph Banks Actually, the first Land Rover was the Series One, which looks fairly similar to the Defender. Often mistaken. The first defender was developed in the 80’s.
Actually they were very good reliable cars far better off roaders compared to the US army's Hummers, how many people can be carried in them? The original Land Rover is an icon made from 1948 - 2016, how long was the Hummer made?
Classic styling by the British stylist that designed the Rover P5/P5B and the P6/P6B all superb looking cars. The P5B inspired the styling for the 2005 Chrysler 300, so Rover must have done something right before BL came on to the scene and ruined the party.
Instead of selling my Range Rover, I set it on fire and got an insurance claim against it. I found that to be the most morale option. Even the insurance company agreed.
@@3rdworldgarage450 I've seen quite a few for sale with bad head gaskets. It's a known problem with these engines. That and cracked exhaust manifolds. Chrisfix has an inexpensive fix for it. Wish I would have known about it before I bought a Discovery!
Doesn’t the 04 vogue have the bmw m62b44 engine? I had an e39 540i with that engine, 330,000km on the original engine, ran beautifully and pulled like a train! Good maintenance is key.
Hoovie, don't get the 2004 Range Rover, get a 2006 and above because if some line in the shocks wore out on the 2002 to 2005 you would go no where. 2006 had a better engine instead of the 2002 to 2005 which had a BMW engine which came from a BMW 540i. If anyone wants to buy a Range Rover buy 2006 and above for the l322 series.
I agree. Mine was a 2006 and the engine is indestructible. Except, everything's else that fell apart. But the engine so very solid and I got mine to 160000k with no engine problem what soever. Its a 2.6 tdv6. I think it was a Ford engine.
I have had several oder RR - and they have been no more issues then my other cars - yes all older cars will have some maintenance - it is standard the air pump goes - and few other things but if maintained well one can get over 200.000 miles with no major issues I will continue to buy used once - as they are great buys - the amount of dislikes of the video shows most do not agree with you - you have an older one - and yes dash lights are no issue to replace - I have replaced the stereo head unit - the 4.4 liter BMW is good engine - then later a Jaguar engine - you have an older model - test any car with that milage and age - obviously you or previous owners have not maintained it well
Comedy. I've owned 2 Range Rovers, an Mk1 (springs) and 2nd Gen (air suspension), and even with over 200,000 miles on them, they were reliable old beasts. The Mk2 cost me about $300 repairs over 3 years (not including consumables) and the Mk3 about $1000, doing most of the work myself. They are the most comfortable 4x4's by far and cope with just about any terrain. Would I buy a Mk3 Range rover? Would I f#*k!
Don't be mad at Rovers just cause yours is broken. I've owned 2 Disco 2s and they're just like any other car, take care of it and it'll take care of you. Do your maintenance on time, do your repairs when they're needed. They're beautiful and capable vehicles if you care enough to keep them that way.
Sure there are. The old adage about British cars “If there’s no oil under it, there’s no oil in it”. But you know something? Replace those OEM gaskets with some third party gaskets and those are just as reliable as anyone else. Head gaskets blowing all the time? Typically only on the newer engines, not while Ford owned the company. And besides, again, redo the head gaskets, use studs and nuts instead of bolts. Now you’ll be doing better than most other vehicles brand new. There are plenty of reasons to complain about the mechanics of any vehicle. No single car is perfect. But if you take care of it, 99% of vehicles on the road are decent at turning the wheels when the gas peddle gets pushed down.

My friend got a brand new 2002 Landrover Discovery for HS graduation. It had an official Landrover Brush guard and aftermarket flood lights. It looked like he could go on a expedition to Africa. It was the biggest piece of shit car. The windows and sunroof leaked! Causing damage to the interior of the car! My 1995 Grand Cherokee (beat to hell by 2 other owners and me) worked fine, drove just aswell, and kept the rain out. Eventually, the head gasket cracked and he sold the car for scrap. I sold my Jeep to a modder for $1k more than I paid for it. Moral of the story... Don't buy RR without serious money.
Honestly, I still look at those cars for sale on Auto trader and fantasize about buying one and spending the better part of my late 30's and early 40's sitting in my garage fixing the various things wrong with it.
May be they watched old episodes of Top Gear, especially the one when the drove three British Leyland cars and the Rover SD1 that Clarkson was driving door fell off. Yes, right I know the quality was a bit suspect at times that was a bit far fetched.
I have an 05 V10 4x4. The V10 might be a bit behind on horsepower, but torque is plenty if you let it rev. It is as reliable as the sunrise with plenty of 300K mile+ examples that have been worked hard. They put this engine in F550's and dump trucks....Put 4:56 gears in it and it's an entirely different vehicle. He has purchased a lot worse....
I’ve had many rovers, I think I bought them all non drivable but after a few over exaggerated issues were repaired they worked well for us. I just sold a LR disco 2 with 211k miles that ran and drove great with no check lights and working ace system. My wife’s old 97 was a very dependable machine, only replaced it with an H2 because because I needed something with more power for pulling when I wasn’t using the gmc 3500. I’m sure I’ll by more LR/RR in the future.

Literally every Land Rover I have ever seen has been fucked up just like these.
I laughed so hard when the grill fell off i almost dropped my coffee
Me too, it was hilarious :P

After beeing a loyal Mercedes customer all my adult life having purchased a €60,000+ car.
Proves big dealerships are up their own arses!!
The saying goes : "If you want to drive to the jungle buy a Range Rover, if you want to drive to the jungle and come back buy a Landcruiser" (lol!)
MrSparklespring Better yet, buy a Lexus LX or Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen. Those will get you there and back.
Indeed good alternatives!
You can thank BMW for messing up Land Rover’s reputation, and thank ford + tata motors for taking over and slowly making them much more reliable cars.
@@gedaman lexus LX is a landcruiser

IT'S TIME FORRRR, DA SCOTTY KILMER - CELICA CHANNEL!
The models I talked about are pretty much the only exception
Edit: just realized they were talking about Range Rovers, not Land Rover Discoveries.
Correct. For Range Rovers you never go below 2008
R A ah, spoken like a moron without a clue.
Except... come to find out, a Range Rover Sport is just a re-bodied LR.
So? A Range Rover is different from a Range Rover Sport.
How is who wrong?

Got a 2017 evoque for my first car.. after 5 months traded it in because it was ALWAYS at the mechanic
My neighbor had one, too. Broke down the first time when driving it home from the dealer on the day of purchase. Sort of down hill after that! But the interior was very nice.
You can hear the type of guy that whispers "bumper to bumper warranty"
Only for the original buyer.
Me when I now buy a second hand range “So you’re saying there’s a chance?”

The gasket to fix that classics exhaust leak is 12$ and less than an hour labor.
Cheers
"rev it up high enough it sounds like a Briggs and Stratton going up the road." Engine proceeds to make this EXACT noise. 😂😂
What if it has a “BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY” available?
Warranty companies often have a specific Range Rover exclusion. There's your sign.

You sold this to a "friend?" Some friend you are.
@CivilGuy you nailed it!
Had to get a new radiator and engine block taps (which had blown out)
Thawed the car in the farmer's garage for a couple of days
Returned, started it up and headed home.
I would watch that series ten times over. Sometimes we gotta learn lessons the hard way mate.
lol holy shit dude that was a great fukken story
You bought an old car, tat was obviously not maintained well. Why are you bitching?
John Burns because the car he bought, the one that allegedly wasn’t properly maintained was an absolute piece of shit. Surely you can’t blame all that went wrong with that turd to lack of maintenance. I’ve seen Plenty if vehicles mistreated for years which never fall apart like that!
Look it’s an old car k new range rovers are some of the best luxury cars so just stop fkn complaining.

Re-syncing the key is easy, btw. Acc1, remove key, press unlock while pressing lock three times. Click-clack and back in business.
Don't worry, those miles will catch up with your car from what I've learned working on them. Sad too and they should be amazing cars. There's no reason in the world that a car should be unreliable in this age of design. to this day I have yet to understand why cheap cars are more reliable than expensive cars shouldn't it be the other way around??. as an owner of a 07 Toyota Tacoma (157k) miles, 94 Honda (233k miles) Accord, and 98 Honda Civic (200k miles) I have to say they are the best most reliable cars ever, Meanwhile some of my friends driving more expensive European cars are always stressing because of how unreliable their cars are. one day I would really like to ask a European luxury car engineer why my cars work better and will last longer than their $100,000 cars
The reason the leather ages well ...it’s in the shop waiting for repairs.

Taking a public poll

These things only need to be "reliable" for the 3 years (approx 60k) that the original (rich) owners keep them before upgrading. Still plenty of warranty issues, but by and large most of the problems with these '3-year-cars' are the next buyers' problem... and where the parts suppliers/dealerships/mechanics make the real $$$ - Moral of the story? Honestly, if you buy a Land Rover, then you cannot hold the same standards of reliability as you can for other vehicles. You can't find a problem and think "oh I'll get it fixed in the next service," because that simply won't work out for you 😁

Walk away..... Fast ......and don't look back
@@exclusivedjcompany Why would you want to go through that?
A new Range Rover comes with more problems than a used one, I explain:
In a used one, its owner already experienced all the problems of this vehicle and had to solve them.
As a qualified Mechanic- we buy any vehicle we want. We can work on any vehicle- because mechanically- there're all the same.
Never buy a new Range Rover I have an evouque and it’s crap
"If you think yours is worse just wait until you see mine."

I told My dad to get a Lexus LX or 2009 Acura MDX Sport instead!! He didn't listen. He Bought a gorgeous 2009 HSE SuperCharged, and 3 weeks later :(.
In his defense you recommended him some pretty awful cars...
A Lexus LX is in no way an awful car.
@@shobin05 lexus Lx... if you aren't educated in a subject don't leave your 2 cents 😂
@@3TimesFaster So is the fiat multipla. But people seem to ignore how good these cars are. I wonder why...🤔
He said Lexus LX not RX so idk what your definition of "awful" is. Acura MDX is lame but still not awful either.
Next video: I bought the cheapest Range Rover.
"Here's Why You Should NEVER EVER Buy a C̶h̶e̶a̶p̶ ̶U̶s̶e̶d Range Rover"

nailed it
Because it’s British. No good car comes from that place
There is no British cars anymore dude... Jag, Range rover, rolls royce, bentley, aston, martin, theyre all either chinese or german.
Range rover has been garbage for decades.
thats funny coming from a Norwegian
First gen Range Rovers like that ‘95, but from the 70s & 80s in particular are collectible classics now, over in the UK & Europe anyway. 70s versions in good order are going for crazy money nowadays.
any 1970 car in good condition is worth money, even a honda.
potatochobit not as much as mint early Range Rovers. I saw one on sale in a classic car mag going for over £70000 or about $92000. I don’t think any 70s era Honda fetches those kind of numbers. Land Rover are building a batch of continuation models now for around £120000 ($157000) I think.
I'll remember when I have 50K laying around.
That old range rover sounds like 7 yr old me tryna mimic a real car sound with my mouth.
Like he said sounded truly like a lawn mower lol
I LOVE the looks of the Range Rover Classic!!! My favorite SUV ever!!!
M Hurly Now a days you can get an Isuzu Trooper for $80 and a crack rod on Craigslist (In all seriousness though, I Love the looks of those.)
Hmmmm🤔....Still gonna buy one just to flex for 1 day
So not rent one for a day?

Instead of selling my Range Rover, I set it on fire and got an insurance claim against it. I found that to be the most morale option. Even the insurance company agreed.
That’s definitely a compression leak, blown head gasket or cracked head, blown plug... The steering play is flat out impressive tho!😂
Agreed, you can hear a huge release of pressure as soon as the engine begins to crank over but before it fires. 100% Compression leak
It's probably a head gasket for sure. It's probably an easy fix assuming that the heads and/or the engine isn't warped. All aluminium engine.
Finally someone who puts it into perspective, every engine needs regular maintenance!
@@3rdworldgarage450 I've seen quite a few for sale with bad head gaskets. It's a known problem with these engines. That and cracked exhaust manifolds. Chrisfix has an inexpensive fix for it. Wish I would have known about it before I bought a Discovery!
replacing engines seems to be regular maintenance in alot of luxury cars, I guess.
That older Range Rover is such a death trap 😂
I have had several oder RR - and they have been no more issues then my other cars - yes all older cars will have some maintenance -
it is standard the air pump goes - and few other things but if maintained well one can get over 200.000 miles with no major issues
I will continue to buy used once - as they are great buys - the amount of dislikes of the video shows most do not agree with you -
you have an older one - and yes dash lights are no issue to replace - I have replaced the stereo head unit - the 4.4 liter BMW is good engine - then later a Jaguar engine - you have an older model - test any car with that milage and age - obviously you or previous owners have not maintained it well
2 door classic Range Rovers are already collectible.
that is because people dont drive collectible cars, they just park them in a garage or barn.
by morons - I bet Trump owns some
@@carlosedwardos i was thinking obama was hoarding them Eh? Who knew
Wow you are naive. Theres reasons for the unreliability.
Sounds like you’ve never owned a reliable car before.
F150 with the inline 6, 300 cu in engine. 01 Xterra with their 3.3 engine, Ford escort with a 4 banger. Chevy Blazer running a Vortec 3.4.
Nothing fancy, but certainly reliable vehicles.
@@JosiahTech the 300 is one of the most reliable engines ever to come out of Cleveland, or anywhere else. My F150 was not a speed demon, but it could have pulled all day without issue.
Cars like bmw, audi, Range Rovers or almost any luxury car, youre better off leasing it unless you got the money tl support it lol.
Honestly, I still look at those cars for sale on Auto trader and fantasize about buying one and spending the better part of my late 30's and early 40's sitting in my garage fixing the various things wrong with it.

Still waiting: I bought the cheapest Ford Excursion in the USA!
My dad had one of those, that V10 Triton engine was a piece of crap. I had scooters with more power.
Jose Manuel why would he do that?
Those excursions with the 7.3 diesels run forever.
American cars are 💩. Hence why nobody buys them outside North America.
He is spot on about NOT to buy a high mileage Rang Rover.
Oh my god your 2004 Range Rover has the same problems in my uncle’s 2004 Range Rover but my uncle’s Range Rover got totaled because the engine gave up
I’ve had many rovers, I think I bought them all non drivable but after a few over exaggerated issues were repaired they worked well for us.
