Why did they alert him by stabbing the bones? They couldve uncovered him, did their spell and threw the potion...done. There was no reason for her to die, not to mention telling her how to to kill him if it wasnt an option like Piper said. Phoebe was wrong for that.
The sisters could have saved Martha there was no need for her to sacrifice herself. As per The Charmed lore; the ways to vanquish a ghost are: Make a vanquishing potion to pour on their bones or vanquishing spell that only a ghost can say. With that being said..Prue Piper and Phoebe just had to get Martha out the house and make the potion to become a ghost, so that one of the sisters can become a ghost and then say the vanquishing spell. The ghost was literally trapped in the house. Prue and Piper were on the field and had an active power to hold off the ghost long enough for Martha to escape.
This was a different kind of ghost, if I remember correctly he would have stayed in the house until the object of his wrath died. There are different ones she wasn’t an innocent
"There's one other way to vanquish a ghost" 1:50. Yes, and it's dying (temporarily with a potion) and using the ashes to ashes spell from the Power of Two, not to destroy the object of its wrath. It's just the 2nd season and already they mess up the continuity. Unless he requires a special vanquish because it's a curse.

I've grown up watching this episode of Charmed many times, and I had previously thought there were other ways to vanquish a ghost. After watching the episode again, I realized that Martha didn't just sacrifice herself to vanquish Elias-this was her redemption. The sisters said that Martha was their innocent, but she made it clear she wasn't innocent because she had killed Elias by shooting him in the back. So, I feel that her sacrifice was not just about protecting her grandchild but also atoning for murdering Elias, even if it was the right thing done for the right reasons.
