I think he meant to say that he’s been caught cheating twice. He said that he only cheated once when he was 12 and once when he was 16. I find it very doubtful that the only times that he cheated, was the only two times that he was caught cheating.

In my opinion it doesn't really matter if he cheated before or not. What's more important is if he cheated during that big game and if he didn't (and there's not enough evidence at all to prove that he was a cheater) then that means he has the full ability to pretty much beat anyone since he nearly beat one of the best chess players in history. Honestly I'm more against Carlson because he just straight-up disappeared and won't explain what's going on. Either he's afraid of getting him in trouble without enough evidence or his ego was hurt and he is in hiding, afraid to face the world. The whole situation is just a bunch of garbage if you ask me. There's so much bigger problems in this world to worry about more than if someone cheated during a game of chess or not.

I'm not gonna take a side. I'm just gonna say that I'm a little surprised that the 15 minute delay wasn't implemented sooner. That's a pretty standard anti-cheating method used in live events where outside knowledge could be gotten from either watching the broadcast or from someone else who is watching the broadcast. Had that already been implemented, that would pretty much destroy most theories of cheating.

You missed three important facts. Knowing that Hans has a history of cheating, Carlson played a variation of an opening HE HAD NEVER PLAYED BEFORE in his professional chess career. Aaaand somehow Hans had prepared for this the same morning. Hmm.
In the post game analysis Hikaru pointed out the holes in Niemann's analysis. Nieman claimed to be an 'intuitive player' when asked about his sketchy analysis.
Niemann played the same moves as the computer was recommending. Coincidence? Hmm.
The delay from broadcasting should fix this type of cheating. A deep ear-piece can have someone remote calling out the moves in Niemann's ear. Unscrupulous mentalists use this method.

@@blaze1148 The game was not a blitz game, players had ample time to make moves (12 mins was Han's longest time to make 1 move IIRC).
The game was live-streamed without delay, meaning an accomplice could input the board into StockFish, which takes secs to come up with the best move. So the goal would be to get a single letter and a single digit across to Hans (eg: "E4"). That would be enough for a GM to know what to play.
That can be done countless number of ways. A person standing in a certain place, using certain signals (tapping foot or doing some pre-determined gesture or taking some amount of steps). A person could flash a laser in a corner/window where only Hans would know to look. If an accomplice is in plain view - there's countless ways to accomplish this.
A person out-of-view could use audio cues that Hans would look for. A remote device planted before hand within sight (not hard). They did not strip search of send him through a full-body x-ray machine - meaning he still could have hidden a device that would bypass security (eg: metal item in belt / glasses, something that security screens as metal but lets through thinking it's harmless). The wand can be defeated by turning off the device - no RF signals. Tons of ways, just got to get creative.
Keep in mind strip searches and full body x-ray systems exist for a reason. If a wand could detect everything, security would have no use strip searching and would have a 100% success rate of finding contraband. It's actually more likely security lets more things through than they actually catch - something to keep in mind. You only need to trick security for 20 secs. It's kinda like playing find Waldo with a 10 sec limit plus the security personnel have limited tools, don't know if the contraband (waldo) is even there or what the contraband (waldo) even looks like.
Finally, if the accomplice is able to enter the arena, they can bring in the device (even in pieces) for Hans totally undetected without as much scrutiny as the players. A little sleight of hand can go a far ways. You also see players leave the seat for bathroom breaks and water - numerous of ways to leave a note of what to play.

you know, Niemann is a young guy of the next generation. a generation full of ultra tech savvy dudes that just know about all kinds of new tech that allows this or that. I wonder if he had some device in his hair that blocked detection from the scanners until it was activated. who knows man, but his moves were insane against Firouzja and Carlsen. I think Magnus noticed something in his playstyle that just didn't feel human and made no sense, just like Firouzja felt when he played vs Hans and Magnus just thought there's noooo way he's winning this tournament with this guy that's using engine moves instead of theory.

As a chess enthusiast and admirer, I'm already disgusted with this. If the issue is not addressed with vigilance, what will happen, is that all the sponsors will run away from chess shows and tournaments, and will refuse to be involved in scandals that will finally smudge their names. The issue is not just about cheating: it is about cheating in chess on very high levels, where there is MORE MONEY involved, and cheating designed in order to get there, where there is MORE MONEY. If it persists and proven suspects were not kicked out for good, then the sponsorships of tournaments become nothing else but money laundering schemes in rigged public shows. What this teaches the next generation of players? What are "real achievements"? Cheated games are worthless. This means certain death to the chess sport, and a total downfall of the game.

2 seemingly opposing statements can be true at the same time. For instance, a person is innocent until proven guilty and there is a lot of cheating in sports(and in general for that matter) that goes undetected. That is to say that whether Hans Neimann is innocent or not is a completely different from whether Hans Niemann cheated or not. He can be both. He could have cheated in such a way that there is no proof of it, at least none that anyone could find. Technically he's still innocent because there's no proof of his cheating, yet he could have cheated just the same. Think of it another way, a person can commit murder(or any other crime for that matter) leaving 0 evidence behind for the police to find. Said person would be innocent of any wrong doing, yet his victim will still be dead all the same.

Niemann cheated and then lied about how much he cheated, and is still lying about it. It's right there in the court findings. He cheated over 100 times, and in rated and prize money games.
Frankly, it doesn't matter whether he cheated against Magnus specifically (though it's perfectly reasonable to suspect that he did) and it doesn't matter whether he cheated OTB or online or both. He's a slimy, dishonest person who clearly WOULD cheat again unremorsefully if he could get away with it, and his persistent lies alone are enough that he shouldn't be allowed to compete in rated games. He's also nothing special as a player. Banning him from FIDE would only improve the world of chess for everyone (other than streamers farming him for content).

There is no smoking gun, but there's a number of circumstantial things that raises suspicions. For one, how is it that Hans (by his own admission..) just happened to have studied the really rare line that Magnus never played before competitively?
(The fact that he admitted this up front could be an attempt to appear transparent and defuse possible future suspicion around this, since it would obviously be far more problematic if he kept quiet about this and it later came to light that he happened to study the line that Magnus played, a line which Magnus never used before in competitive chess...)
How is it that evaluating Hans' moves in this game, many moves (like 25 consecutively) all exactly match the top StockFish engine moves, while normally Hans' games (like most human players) has nowhere near this level of consistency with the preferred engine moves?
How is it that the explanations/analyses for his own moves were so flippant/weak after the match? Usually if you're at that level you can explain in quite minute detail what you were thinking. But generally/vague explanations are to be expected if the moves were really engine moves and you didn't really know why the engine made the moves it did.
Finally, Hans' has previously cheated. And he's been banned from Chess.com for cheating too. Chess.com, one would think, would not enforce a ban like that unless they had pretty solid smoking gun cast iron proof, one would think.
All of which remains circumstantial but does make you go "hmmm."

    • @tessjuel
      @tessjuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It's not actually unexpected for a player to loose against an opponent with much lower ranking. It happens now and then and one of the reasons why tournaments go over several rounds is to prevent such outlier matches to affect the end result.
There are several indications that Niemann cheated although none of the are very strong:
+ Niemann has himself admitted to have cheated before, last time only three years ago.
+ He is a student of Maxim Dlugy who is known to have been a cheater and has confessed to be so
+ Everybody, even chess players, make mistakes so they won't be able to find the best solution for each and every move throughout a game. If I remember right, Kasparov managed 69.5% efficiency at his best. Carlsen has on some very rare occasions managed slightly higher than 70%. Niemann has on at least one occasion managed 100% efficiency, something no other chess player has ever done. It may have been a fluke of course.
+ Carlsen played a very unusual game yet Niemann said he had happened to analyze it the morning before the game. That's incredibly lucky.
+ Niemann was unable to analyze a game he had just played because he is an "intuitive player". That doesn't ring quite true, especially when we compare it to the two points I listed above.
It's all circumstantial evidence of course and as I said, probably not very strong either. But there is certainly more to it than Carlsen being p****d off for loosing a game.

      The difference is:
1 - that they can explain their moves and thinking in great detail right after the game and it makes sense every time.
2 - their performances are consistent for their level in all environments. Online, tournaments, out in the park, whereever.

Regardless of whether he cheatest this time, a former cheater should never have been allowed to compete in the first place. I know he was only 16 at the time, but just like how juveniles can be tried as an adult if the offense should be obviously wrong even to a juvenile, he should have known that it was wrong even as a 16 y.o and thus be thrown out as a consequence. Especially if he was already caught twice.
