I remember playing this game, eventually managing to complete the entire mission, then playing it over and over, searching for a happier ending, working my way back through the game, expecting some sort of exit to reveal itself. Eventually I gave up. Really glad that a couple of decades later, it is confirmed that there was no such solution. Closure at last.
There IS a happy ending when you go all the way back to the first screen... but the PC version has a bug that prevents you from doing this. On other versions it's possible, though.
@@BlackDragonTK Actually it IS possible! Reach the end of the game (killing the wizards and the "main" wizard aka final boss), but do NOT fall into the pit. Instead backtrack rightmost, to the bottom of small stairs (killing wizards again cos yeah, they respawn, like most if not all enemies), and then, at the bottom of the stairs do a backflip so you'll land on one of the middle steps. Then proceed ... left. You will be walking in the air - yes, a bug. Then pass the screen of both wizards, the final wizard and ... above the pit, still going left. You'll be able to skip the screen and because of another programming bug you'll land in the VERY first screen. Then just go left and finish the mission as it should have been completed/as intended : )
We had to load this game on tape cassette recorder and wait for more than 1 hour till it's loaded. Then it could disconnect any moment. It was in Russia, 1991-92.

Well, it had kind of dark atmosphere, but other than that I see no similarity. No souls (or other similar thing to collect and use as a currency), no respawning, no character evolution ... just the immense frustration from the odd controls by F1-F12
There's something about how quiet the platformers of this era were that makes the ambience feel creepy and desolated. It just works extremely well for the Sword & Sorcery aesthetic, in my opinion.

For me, I think my brother did finish the game. Because I use to watch him play and the scenes look familiar to the end, and I remember the use of the shield too.
I heard that players were supposed to backtrack but there is a bug causing a loop on the way back. So jumping down becomes the only way to beat the game.

There is a bug causing a loop when you are trying to return back to start (and win a game). This bug was making me nuts. Never finished this game properly. Maybe this game was hacked. This is how I can only explain existence of this bug.

I adore this conceptual idea of a soul vaporising from the defeated NPCs. Almost every game used it during the epoch.

this game, was very first i´ve played on pc, and also undoable, and you did it like it was nothing, very well! :)
If I remember properly, I never passed the point of 8:09 when I was a kid. That savage always killed me at the top of the ladder.

I played this util the end on my Atari ST, and it had the exact same useless ending.

There is a bug: if you drop the bow, the shield will appear, and vice versa.
So it does end like that, I always thought I was doing something wrong when I played this as a little kid

If you run left from the start, spike spring from the ground insta-killing you. Pretty much standard fare for this game.
