  • Did you know that cells can talk to one another? One cell can send a molecule over to another cell, and a receptor protein in the cell membrane will receive it, just like molecular walkie-talkies. Check it out!

Bro - your lecture was so good and helped so much. I am taking a psychopathopharmacology class and your lecture was a game changer for me. So basically, psychoactive drugs are just ligands that we hope illicit a favorable response. Would you say that is a correct way to look at it? Thanks!

3:04 I think such standard explanation of Phosphorylation cascade can be misleading. The Phosphorylation kinase are not "exchanging" Phosphate group, the activated Phosphorylation kinase would make APT to give up extra Phosphate group to yet-to-be-activated Phosphorylation kinase.
The power of cascade is the chain reaction that amplify a signal from one Phosphorylation kinase to a huge amount of Phosphorylation kinase that can eventually bind with a lot of other proteins for some large scale cellular response. This amplification is a very non-trivial process. Typically you would image a few molecules can only cause a few reaction. However, a cascade is need for situation like how a camera can capture one photon and amplify it to a macroscopic effect like pixel changes on ones detector. (also like how g-protein can amplify a signal)
By the way, I love Professor Dave's videos overall. They are very good. Also I can be wrong about Phosphorylation cascade. Biochemistry is not my field.

As a nursing student, toddler mom, and one whose dog is currently challenging my rent amount in the hospital for canine pancreatitis, it is a laughable amount, but please accept my meager monthly dolla-dolla bill toss into your guitar case, good sir. If there was a "Professor Dave pretends to be you and takes your exams for you" option, I'd probably figure out a way to make that happen, academic dishonesty aside. :)
