TRUE STORY: In 1986, I was an extra on La Bamba. We were shooting the concert scene at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA where Ritchie performs La Bamba for the first time. The director instructs everyone to start rushing the stage and dance when the cameras roll. After he yells: "cut", I approach him and confidentially tell him that I saw several people dancing The Twist and he says: "so?". I then proceed to tell him that The Twist wasn't invented until several years after Ritchie passed away. He quickly got on his bullhorn and told everyone to "Not Dance The Twist!".

one blooper that made it into the script was that ritchie had no rhythm and his recordings had to be spliced in from several takes. i just took a listen to his pacoima performance of la bamba. it's a little slower than the studio recording, but the rhythm and tempo are consistent. can't believe 90% of what those biopics tell us.

I was Richie's age in 1987 when my mother won 2 movie tickets on the radio that summer to the premiere of La Bamba in Idaho Falls Idaho. It was a beautiful summer in '87 to be a seventeen-year-old, first job, first love, and then going to the movie theater to see this for the first time on the big screen with Mom She loved the music and shared her memories with me of experiencing this through the 50's.

When I was a kid the movie seemed to be of a time long ago, now I can relate to the time difference. I still feel young though. lol Man, I wish Richie was still alive today. He'd be an old man with an amazing career. I wonder how many records he'd have. RIP

My former coworker, Eddie Frias, was Chino the drummer. He had just finished filming La Bamba when I started working with him in late 1987. He also was one of the gang members that try to extort Michael Douglas for being in their hood in the movie Falling Down. Unfortunately I haven’t seen Eddie since 1992. Thank you for video.

Hard to believe that movie is almost 35 years old. Ritchie Valens would've been 80 this year. RIP. I met Lou Diamond Phillips who played Ritchie back in the mid-90's. His band The Pipefitters was playing at a local club.

Back then many young men and women looked older. They were not cuddle. Many actually were working by 16 full time jobs in the summer and part time during school. Many were working to contribute to the family income. When you work when young it ages you but it also teaches you responsibility and priorities.

My mom got a parking ticket because of this movie…. We lived in Mexicali but crossed the border to Calexico for grocery shopping… they built the “brothel” on 1st and Heffernan and posted signs that the street was closing, but my mom didn’t read English so she parked anyways… and got ticketed. The picture with the painted zebra is the corner or 2nd & Heffernan… the “oasis” and the theater next door do not exist anymore.
