I was literally only diagnosed with hypermobility yesterday, but it has already brought so much clarity to me. It's explained so many things that I always assumed were either normal, or just a "me" thing- my joint pains and natural flexibility without having done a day of gymnastics in my life, my "weird" hands (thumbs, fingers, wrists) that I have always liked to use for party tricks or freaking out friends (haha), my ability to crack almost every bone in my body (every knuckle on my fingers, each individual toe, knees, spine, wrists, jaw, etc). I always thought that these things were simply things that everyone could do/dealt with, but when I'd talk about it or show it off, people would always be adamant about it "not being normal." When my doctor told me I had scored a 7/9 on the beighton test (the only points I didnt score were the ones for my legs), I had a moment of, like, "...oh... OH... THAT MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW." idrk what the point of this comment is, I just thought I'd share for those of you who think you may be hypermobile/are in the process of being diagnosed.

@@Jackariah-N. it's definitely the first step. bring up your symptoms, maybe demonstrate the areas of most hypermobility, and go from there. they'll likely refer you to a specialist, though if they don't, you can always check online for hospitals with pain management teams/occupational therapists, or private professionals. good luck

Why did she say yes for the “thumbs to the wrist” even though her thumbs didn’t touch her wrist?

The older you are the less hyper-mobile you become. She was very close, closer to most in her age, older people with it are not expected to perform like someone who is younger. Also putting your hands flat on the floor is not required anyone because many people with connective tissue disorders can no longer even stand let alone bend fully over and touch the ground palms flat.

I told and showed my primary care doctor I'm hypermobile but she doesn't care or think its important. I believe i have EDS as i have ongoing gut problems and tons of allergies - I think its MCAS. I can do all of those joints but my right wrist and my toes can do a 90 degree angle too..plus i can rotate my elbows too. I actually asked the doctor to get diagnosed with the hypermobility spectrum disorder and she just ignored me as she thought it wasn't important. But hypermobility can affect lots of stuff.

This is so interesting. My daughter is in ballet school because she is, as we've thought so far, "extra flexible". She was more flexible as a beginner than many other kids who had been doing ballet for some years. She can do splits with a wider angle than 180 degrees, touch the ground with her palms in forward fold and she always freaks people out with her contorsionist poaes. No pediatrician that has seen her said anything about hypermobility and the possible future problems she might have. I will do the test with her, but I don't know who should we consult next? And is it safe for her future health to continue doing ballet intensively?

Do most people who have hypermobility also have severe foot overpronation? I have both and have been advised I probably need surgery to my feet. But due to my feet being extremely flexible in general, they may not be able to do the standard triple arthrodesis procedure. Is this common?

I am double jointed in both of my elbows ,and both of my knees. I also have one leg a inch shorter than the other. My knees ,and my shoulders ,and wrist sometimes come slightly out of joint, anywhere from one to three days. I think I maybe be double jointed in my ankles to. When I was a kid I could do the splits ,and I could put both my legs behind my head and make myself into a pretzel.

I (26M) was diagnosed with hypermobility last week when I showed my orthopedist my "freak trick" - turning my right index to touch the back kf my hand. She just looked at that and said "welp, you don't even need to do anything else to demonstrate it to me. Off to strengthening you go."

      Average Adult
Basically if they bend a little bit more back then regular people, same thing with your legs, I suggest that you do it with non hyper mobile people you know, that’s how I noticed I was hyper mobile, so than I took a the test and questionnaire. (8/9 on test, almost 9/9, and I forgot my score on the questionnaire)

  • @MsDragonfire1992
    @MsDragonfire1992 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

8/9 for me. I don't think I've ever been officially diagnosed but everyone sais I'm weird because of been able to bend my thumbs back to my wrists and bending my fingers and elbows in strange ways. I get joint pain all the time and I can't run otherwise my ankles just go on me and I fall and I also had sever pain during my 2 pregnancies that ended me been bed bound and un able to walk even more than a few steps with crutches.

I'm no doctor but as someone that has some complications related to this (eds/hsd) I think you should bring it up but just don't worry too much unless you have other symptoms such as GI issues, pain, or any other problems like that because it could suggest a more complex diagnosis

  • @geanbean1305

I got 4/5 on the first one but only like 4/9 on the 2nd. The thing is, if I had more skin on my hands, I'd be able to do the finger ones, and with the knees, I actually can't even straighten them all the way to 180°, I actually can only go about 175° 😅 but I can do a bunch of weird stretches, and I actually injured myself the other day Cuz I went I to a split from a standing position, and I pulled all 3 of my hip flexors because it didn't stop at 180° it went over to probably more around 190° 😅
Keep in mind, I am an Irish dancer, and I have done split stretches almost everyday/every week of my life for the past 8 years, but I already could when I started.🙃

I am hyperflexible and I do muay thai where I constantly kick and stretch. I dont have issues with splits, in fact, after giving birth to my daughter, I have increased flexibility in my hips that I can go past 180 splits on all sides. Considering my flexibility and sport, is there a way that I can continue training without causing damages to my body in the long run. I am working on combining strength and flexibiity but often times flexibility wins. I appreciate your help. Thank you

Maiatsu technically you need to go to a doctor to get diagnosed with HMS (hypermodility syndrome) or JHMS (joint hypermodility syndrome) but you can start seeing if you are by doing a test like this at home.

    • @thursdayplurbonym-boyporri8921

coming from an officially diagnosed patient with a 4/5 and a 9/9:
Not necessarily, however with your results, I would consider doing some further research about the syndrome and see how many of the varied symptoms you experience, and get a better idea about it. If you still feel like it's a possibility, I would go to your doctor and ask for an official check.
